OK, here is my progress on a DH-9a operated by the USMC in 1918. All paint is enamels,MM and Humbrol. I've added rigging with EZ line, and Radus turnbuckles. the wires from the battery were stretched on the sprue, and painted black and red, cut loose, and wrapped around each other, and attatched to the battery, past the switch panel, and behind the dash. This is basically press fit, which is tight with the paint.

Excellent work. This will be fun to watch!!

Nice start Mike, it certainly is an impressive cockpit.
I've found this thing need more hours spending on it once its built what with bombs, guns and other bits and pieces falling off, dusting and rigging fixing.
-
Excellent start Mike, the interior looks very good so far, looking forward to seeing this one go together.

Watch out for the bloody cat!

Hi Mike:
One of my favorites. I built this in Marine markings when it first came out. I enjoyed the build, it goes together well, some tricky parts with the engine, but other than that, a fun build.
Looking forward t seeing you progress through the build.
Best
Mark
-
Thanks for all of your kind comments guys. There are a lot of little bits to go together!
Dean, I keep the model room door SHUT after Miss Pusscakes got in last time. Still, this is using a different skill set from the WWII stuff I ussually do, and it is fun to figure out.
-
Fantastic start on the innards, Mike. I'll be watching this one closely since I have this kit in the stash.
Cheers,
Bud
-
Mike,
Outstanding first progress my old friend. I'm looking forward to following your future progress. I can appreciate your choice of markings too. Keep up the great works.

Hi Mike
Love the seat mate
All looks good so far, go for it ;)
Dave
-
Dave, your build is helping me along! I'd love to see a resin Humpback coversion for this in 1920s livery.
-
Mike,
Great start and a very real looking cockpit. Looking forward to following your progress.

OK second installment. I sprayed Humbrol "Sand"(63) as my base coat, and let it dry in the breeze thru a window. next day, I laid down a puddle of MM burnt sienna, and then just applied it with a brush and used thinner to control the effect. One thing I've done is lay down a base woodgrain effect, and then stipple the paint; I then brush that out to break up the effect and try to get a grainy look. I used a straightedge to lay on two tones of paint to show where two pieces of ply may have been used and butted up. the series of pics will show where I got. The wood will prolly get a satin top coat, and then CDL as needed. Apologies for the clutter in the back!

Coming along nicely Mike.
I assume the ejector pin marks will be hidden behind the bulkhead of the instrument panel?
-
Dean, yes, Those won't be visible, or most of the interior for that matter. IF I don't add a detail, that will be visible.
-
Seems a shame, that cockpit looks great with the wood effect & the control wires you've added.
Take some photo's of the interior - you can show them next to the model!
-
The woodgrain is convincing...
-
Dean, I'm sure I'm just the next in line to be covering a lot of good cockpit detail with a fuselage!
Thank you Bo, I hope to get even better wood (effects!)next time.

Thank you Bo, I hope to get even better wood (effects!)next time.
I hope not, if you do none of the rest of us will ever be able to show our wood grain again ::) EXCELLENT work!

Mike, How is the build coming along? The pictures
show deleted. The model was taking shape so well,
I do hope the cat didn't take revenge for being locked out!
Here's hoping. :)

Sorry guys, I put all the pics in a folder, so they show deleted. I've been busy lately, and need to get back to the kit. The motor is mostly not seen, so will be stock. When I get going I'll get some pics up. Thank you for the inspiration!

Keep up the good work, Mike. Looking forward to the next update.

What you have done so far is ACE 8)
I will follow your build with a lot of interest laddie.
Looking good man. Look forward to seeing the other pics ;)

Ok, I ran into a major "lack of mojo" issue. Partly solved by cutting up a 1/32 Emil to backdate to a Me-109D. So, I then resumed the Dh. Got some seams cleaned up, and started planning the next stages of the build. I used Humbrol HB-16 CDL to spray the upper wing, and then masked the rib tapes. Re-sprayed with RAF HEMP to sort of shade it a bit and make the tapes "pop" a bit. The other thing I noticed is that some interpretations show the CDL to be "whiter", whereas this is definitely yellow. thoughts? Here is the look:
(http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg270/mikeincalif/DH-9a/dh-9awings2.jpg) (http://s250.photobucket.com/user/mikeincalif/media/DH-9a/dh-9awings2.jpg.html)
Not too sure about it. I looked at another build, and I see the 2nd coat is sprayed over the tapes, which when unmasked gives them the look as seen in pics. I sprayed in the valleys, and not on the tapes, so I have a variation on the theme. The lower wings will be done with tapes masked and sprayed; I figure the countershading will make the ribs pop better.
Here is another with different light:
(http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg270/mikeincalif/DH-9a/dh-9awings3.jpg) (http://s250.photobucket.com/user/mikeincalif/media/DH-9a/dh-9awings3.jpg.html)

Excellent paint and counter shading on her wings Mike. Keep up the outstanding progress my old friend.

PS: Where's your ME 109-D conversion posted?
-
OK, put in some time and advanced the lower wings, and flappy bits. Thank you for the comments, it helps. Greg, My -109 Dora is on LSP. I'm using the AlleyCat conversion.
My base of Humbrol HB-16 CDL, and Xtra color(colour?) HEMP. I used a straightedge to cut strips which I then stuck to the ribs. On these wings I sprayed the ribs, and let the overspray run wild in the valleys. I tried to sort of minumise the overspray; I'm OK with the look, but want to refine this technique- next build. I'm not too sure on my color palette either, but here is what I've got:
(http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg270/mikeincalif/DH-9a/001.jpg) (http://s250.photobucket.com/user/mikeincalif/media/DH-9a/001.jpg.html)

The wing shading came out really well Mike. I struggle with this step most of the time but you seem to have the process nailed down solid.
Cheers,
Chris
-
Looks awful, I can't even tell what aeroplane it is from those pictures.
-
I think the undersides look fine, Mike. Maybe just another light top coat to even things up a bit. Looking forward to the next update.
-
Thanks for your comments guys, I'm glad to hear your comments. Maybe I'll dust it with some CDL, but then we're on to the Green. This kit has a pretty big wing-span, like the J-1 Junkers.
Dean, this is for a Sopwith Triplane. Missing your fix of Dads Army are ya?
-
I'm having some troubles to see the previous pisctures, but the wings are really nice.
Cheers
-
OK, I've been pushing forward a bit, and have some progress. I sprayed the tail with some OD green, and then had to mask the ribs to lighten them up. I then sprayed the upper ribs with a pre-shade, which I'll mask off and spray a darker OD. I sprayed the fin and rudder as well. When done with paint I'll use pastel chalks to push the color a bit, along with a pin wash. I'm hoping to get some decals on, and have a clear satin coat by weeks end. Here are the wings showing uppers and lowers.
(http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg270/mikeincalif/DH-9a/002.jpg) (http://s250.photobucket.com/user/mikeincalif/media/DH-9a/002.jpg.html)

Bloody good Mike. Love the pre-shading. Excellent job.
Most impresses Mike. Keep up the good work. THis one
looks like a cracker 8)

Dave
-
I like the effect. Thanks for the detailed explanation.
-
Dave, thanks mate! If I land in the shadow of your DH, I'm happy.
Rob, per Chris's suggestion I've dusted the wing tops with very thin OD green to lessen the contrast; less is more. I'm close to clear coating the wings, and decaling. Here is the fuselage, which is sprayed with the called out Grey. I then took some good old Testors grey and lightened it up a lot, and re-sprayed to get some contrasty stuff. Touch up filling and then back with some straight grey to add some more shades of grey, but I'm not going to 50. Here is this mornings work:

Nice work. The weathering is spot on. 50 shades of OD ok - grey - not so much.....bad lit. for the coogs......

Will you look at that...it's my buddy Mike. Your doing great on this DH.9. Looks like your pretty close to attach the wings to fuselage. Keep it up and I bet those guys at the museum will love her.

Sorry for the delay responding!
Ed, I have never been to an O/Con, so this year I'd like to go. Hopefully I can take this bird.
Steve, Thanks mate, the grey should show up some fuel/oil stains as well.
Mike, thanks for dropping by. The standard here is very high, and the best part is the members are so helpful. A lot of the builds are crazy good, so for me it's a continuing evolution.
Gregory, thanks mate. I am at a point where I seem to take 1 step forward, and then go sideways. I hope to get some progress soon, and maybe even post a piccie or three.

Hi Mike:
I think you are doing a great job with the shading. Always an experiment and a learning experience. We never know how it will turn out. The highlights give it depth and character. I built one when it was first released about three years ago (YIkes) with no shading, now I would do it with shading following your example and techniques. Looking forward to seeing you progress on this one.

Lance, Mark, thanks for the votes of confidence! As was pointed out in an Albie thread, we sometimes are just too close. I'm trying to get some wee bits done, and then to add some wingy parts.

OraCon, Saturday Oct 5, 2013, at Student Union Cal State Fullerton
-
Sorry for the delay responding. Ed, if I get there, this would be my first OC. I'd like to show it at least once, so OC might be my best bet.
I'm at the point where I feel like I'm spinning my wheels. Lots of details, not much measurable progress. I should get the tail together soon, but am waiting for my Nordland order to arrive. I have to puzzle out RAF wires also. This kit is a bit more complex than the Junkers, but I think it may come out OK. Some pics soon.
I don't comment a lot here, but sure do look at the work shown, and I have to say, each build seems to raise the bar. I don't think there is a finer kit to start with on the market in 1/32, and the work displayed is just outstanding

Been otherwise detained, preparing to move house, but came in for a quick look.

Dave, Dave,
Thanks for the support! It has been very hot, and unusually humid, so I've just got back to this build. I got a semi-gloss clear coat on, so glued up the wings. This will sit for a day, but I should be able to work on sub-assemblies. Here is a couple of pics of my set up to true the wing height, side to side. They were off by a fair bit. ( am I the only one?) The first two are the hi-tech set-up, and the last is an overall view. Apologies for the back ground clutter.

Dave, thanks for the comments. I can't seem to get to far from this look on my bench. Model builders must be the weirdest group on the planet, with little wee bits and pieces floating around...."for use someday".
Anyway, here is a bit of progress. The fuse is almost done. I had to modify the gunsight post with a bit of wire. I went at the fuse with some pastels chalks, just to break it up a bit; all sealed now in a satin finish.
(http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg270/mikeincalif/DH-9a/001-8.jpg) (http://s250.photobucket.com/user/mikeincalif/media/DH-9a/001-8.jpg.html)

Test fit of top wingy part. This is just sitting on the four inner struts; very positive location once set in place. The wing is complete, and sealed top and bottom, again in a satin finish. I'm working on the fuselage MG, tail, and struts. All require their own time, but once done should assemble nicely. I'm at the point where I need to start planning a base. I'm leaning towards a simple flat base, painted earth tones, and maybe with some clumpy bits of grass; I may also go with a similar base as used for my Junkers J-1. I'd like to add a WWI EGA to the base as well. Aynway here it is so far:

Beautiful!! Very nice paint jod and detailing Mike.

-
Zabu
Thank you! I'm glad to see this coming together.
-One other note: I was really not looking forward to trying to decal the tail/rudder. The decal as it comes fits perfectly and I just soaked it in Microscale microsol as I worked on other bits. Basically just kept the decal wet; when done, the edges had wrapped around the rudder. Next day, I did the other side, same results: the decal wrapped around the edges and completely covered the rudder. NO paint touchups, no bubbles, just as good as it gets. You can see the stiches under the decal. All I have to do is satin coat, hit with some pastels, and then seal it.
Sorry for the long-winded explanation, but I've never seen a decal do this. It's exactly the right amount oversize.
-
Excellent progress, Mike. She's looking awesome.
Cheers,
Bud
-
such a nice and big plane! what kit is from?
-
Thanks for looking in Bud!
Quentin, this is the WNW kit in USMC markings.
-
Looking good Mike, inspired me to get cracking on my big seagoing biplane....
-
The big beast is looking good. Just wondering what your "adjustable post pencil holder" actually is.
Steve
-
Thanks for looking in Dean. The masses are indeed waiting to see that Walrus of a kit.
Steve, A long time ago, I worked in orthotics/prosthetics, and that was my height gauge
I sat down this AM, and started to pre-drill the upper wing to attach my Gaspatch metal anchor points. I count 32 for the upper wing alone. I figure the fixed point would be on the upper wing, and the adjustable at the lower just because it could be worked on more easily. The study comes in making sure the anchor point is turned the correct way depending on the direction of the cable run.
I started to drill the G/P bits, but only have a couple of #78 drill bits, so will drill the plastic first. I should have drilled the fuselage a long time ago!
-
I am in awe mate ;) Whata great job you are making 8) It gets better and better.
In fact, the old girl is getting to really look the part now, and your attention to the
details is admirable . . . . I will be watching this one my friend, and I am sure that
going by what you have done so far, it will probably fly . . ;)
Good one, keep it up
Catch you again soon, best regards

Mike, this one looks better with each update! You are doing a great job and I am looking forward to seeing the rigging process!

How's the progress ? ready for Orange Con on Oct 5 ?
Ed

A little more.
First, thanks for all the kind comments, and people looking in, it helps.
The rudder decal set-up. Just amazed at how they wrapped around just enough; this is the finished look:
(http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg270/mikeincalif/DH-9a/002-5-1.jpg) (http://s250.photobucket.com/user/mikeincalif/media/DH-9a/002-5-1.jpg.html)

Next up: Pre-drilling and installing the Gaspatch anchor points- 32 for the upper wing. I'm thinking to pre-rig the upper wing, install, and then (hopefully) just have to rig to the lower wing and fuse.
(http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg270/mikeincalif/DH-9a/005-2-2.jpg) (http://s250.photobucket.com/user/mikeincalif/media/DH-9a/005-2-2.jpg.html)
I added all the same points to the fuselage where applicable, and pre-drilled the rest for turnbuckles. This view also shows the windscreens installed. Like a dumbass I drilled out the Aldis sight, detail painted, and clear coated the lenses; I then installed it too far forward, so I fixed that , then installed the windscreens. I have also woodgrained, dark washed, and clear coated the wing rigging points for the ailerons and elevators. I of course had a catastrophic tweezer launch ,which sent the MG cocking lever (PE) into orbit; hopefully WNW can get me another. Here is where I'm at:

Mike,
Looks a big model!
Coming along great. I like the pre shading you've done so far - adding a realistic look to your model.

Dave

That pre shading it's state of the art and makes the model to pop my eyes out.
Can't get tired of looking to that paint work. Fantabulastic!
Cheers

Thank you both for looking in. I'm glad to hear it looks OK. Most of the variation is pastels, and a pinwash. I did play with the grey a bit in the airbrush; good old testors!
-
Nice job Mike ;)
I'm always impressed by the work involved on these bigger kits.. They seem disproportionately more complex somehow..
Guy
-
You are doing an amazingly good job, Mike! I am really enjoying watching
her take shape. Wonderful paint work!
Cheers,
Ernie :)
-
Guy, This is only my second WNW kit, and I'm still on two seaters! next up will be something with one wing, and one pilot. This kit does take more planning, and looking ahead build-wise.
Ernie, thanks for your kind compliments. This is a big plane, and as such it gives ample opportunity to try different effects with color. I'm trying to stay with just pastels, and pinwash, now that the majority of airbrush work is complete.
-
You are making excellent progress Mike, your painting and pre-shading is superb.

Gday Mike
She's looking the part mate 8) Keep up the good work and I have to

That's looking very nice, Mike, particularly the way you added some depth of colour to the grey.
Cheers.

-
Triple Ds, (Des,Dave, and Dal,
Thanks for the comments. I just finished pre-rigging the upper wing. My theory is to mount the wing, and be able to just pull each line down as needed. The turnbuckles will be on the lower wing. I'm really studying the drawings to make sure I have all the points pre -drilled at a close to correct angle. The rest should be straightforward....I'll try to get some pics up soon.
-
Cracking job Mike..
What could be easier than rigging a DH-9? :o
Guy
-
Nice work on the shading process. I am looking forward to your progress!
RAGIII
-
Thanks for your comments! I've begun the rigging. Trying to work from the inside out. The gaspatch turnbuckles look good. It was fun trying to estimate the angles for the turnbuckles to glue into; some tweaking will be done. I'll paint the ends with some thick paint to simulate the crimps that hold the cables. I hope EZ line can handle enamel paint with out separating! Again, the upper wing has been pre-rigged, hence the loose lines; I'll pull them down as needed. Apologies for the clutter!

Nice start on the rigging, Mike. The turnbuckles look good. I think the
tubing to the pitot looks great. 8) Looking forward to more progress shots.
Cheers,
Ernie :)

As I already mentioned Mike, dandy job on the DH, but I wanted to send
my congratulations on being our featured modeler. Well earned, Mike!
Take a bow, my friend. :)
Cheers,
Ernie :)

Ernie, thank you, I'm in some pretty awesome company I can tell you that!

Wow! I almost fell off the page! It's been awhile, but I've been plugging away at the rigging. The lines look to me to be seized, as with ships. So, to try to duplicate that look, I bringing a line back on itself, and using a needle to apply a drop of CA, the a wee drop of kicker, to set the whole deal. I'm not real happy with the look, but figured out a refinement towards the end. So, here are a few pics, which look moody, but show off the lovely gaspatch turnbuckles. All holes were pre-drilled at as close to the angle as I could get. I CA the little cut-off end of the T/Buckle, pull the line with tweezers, and then sort of wiggle it into some sort of alignment. When the T/B sets, I pull through and complete the rig. I hope this makes sense. I have not found a clear pic of the very front of the cabane strut rigging, which makes an "X"; I just need a pic of where to attach. Pretty happy to be at this point though.

Your rigging is AWESOME! Well done all around. This one is really Looking Like a Beast of War now !

Wonderful job on the rigging, Mike! The turnbuckles look great and worth the
extra fiddling to get them aligned. Super progress, my friend!
Cheers,
Ernie :)

Mike,
You've got a real winner coming here. The Gaspatch Buckles look great and the grey toning/contrast of the fuselage is very effective. On your earlier remark regarding the extra work, planning, and time involved with a "two holer" I agree completely. My sole venture into this category is still in progress after nearly double the time of a single seat Build, and the pitfalls are well documented in my Brisfit Build Log; a real eye opener and surprise to me!
You are almost there, keep at her, she's magnificent.
Cheers,
Lance

Very nicely done rigging.
The model has a superb look.

Thank you all for the words of encouragement! After doing all the rigging, I'm at the point where all I see is the not-so-good-stuff. It helps to get a little feedback, which in this case makes me feel a little better. Definitely a learning experience.
Lance, ya, there is a little more "looking forward" with a build like this.

Don't get side-tracked by the things that you could have done better, Mike. When
you look at the whole package it is a blinding success! The other stuff you can file
in the education dept. :) Already I can't wait to join you on your next project. ;D
Cheers,
Ernie :)

Looks great to me Mike,
In my experience, the bigger, longer projects tend to make me fall out of love with the model for a spell towards the end, but they're worth it when you finish!
Nearly there now :D

Ernie, Guy,
Thanks for the words of encouragement! Still more planning, and details, but it is getting closer. I'm shooting to deliver on Nov.10th., the birthday of the USMC.

Hello Mike:
I will echo the sentiments of the others here on the job you are doing. It is all experimental and your work is outstanding. Your shading, highlighting etc., all top notch. I used EZ line and like you rigged the upper wing. I found the rigging on this bird to be rather straightforward with no pitfalls. It is an impressive build and you are doing an impressive job. Looking forward to more as you progress through this build. I have one more in the stash and want to do the one with "White walls"!
Best

This is looking really good Mike.
I can't wait to see how it progresses.

Thank you all for the kind comments and encouragement. I'm plugging away as time permits, and I really want to show this at least once before delivery, so I guess it's the Secret Society of Model Builders Winterfest 2014. Held the week-end of the NFL pro-bowl, Jan 28th IIRC. At any rate, some more pics soon.

OK, back to it! I fell 4 pages, and am back on my feet. I decaled, drilled and pinned all the flying surfaces, have decided on how to finish the rigging. I'll get a pic up next day or so. I have to remind myself that this will be behind glass and not viewed at anything closer than 3 feet.... need to finish for Winterfest 2014 on Jan 25th.
