Title: Introducing the 2025 "Shelf Queen" Group Build!
Post by: Brad Cancian on December 29, 2024, 08:14:01 AM
Hello all!

Registered members of the Forum are invited to participate in the "Shelf Queen 2025" Group Build!

The Group Build starts on Wednesday, 15 January 2025, and finishes on Sunday, 15 June 2025, giving participants a five month build timeframe.

In the spirit participation and encouragement, there will be no prizes. The idea here is to come together as a WW1 modelling community and finally get to that "Ornamentum Reginae" that we all have in our stashes (you know the one? or ones?!)

Different to previous group builds, I will be running the build logs for this one on the "Under Construction" board, instead of creating a new board elsewhere on the site. That should maximise exposure and participation in the group build. Finished builds can then be posted under the "Completed Models" section. This is the first time we've tried it this way so we'll see how it runs :)

Group Build Rules:

1.   The group build is open to all registered members of the forum. Members from all skill levels are encouraged to enter.

2.    Your entry may be an aircraft, artillery, armour, vehicle, figure, ship or a diorama.

3.   The model must represent a WW1 subject operational during the period 1914-1918.

4.   Any scale smaller than 1/1 scale is permitted.

5.   Any building medium is permitted.

6.   You can enter as many times as you like.

7.   Choose any "Shelf Queen", i.e. a started model that has been languishing on your "shelf of doom". The only rule is that it must already be part of your existing model "stash". The model may be started, or unstarted . The idea here is to build and finish something that has been either part started and since relegated back to the shelf, or a kit that has been a twinkle in your eye as a project in your stash for quite a while. I'm using the honour system here, so please don't go and buy a brand new kit for the group build.

8.   Add your selected subject as a response to this thread; that way I can track who has entered and what has been entered (helps me compile the summary of the Group Build at the end).

9.   A build log should be started as a new topic on the "Under Construction" board. Please prefix your build log with the title "Shelf Queen 2025 GB". For example, if you were building a 1/48 Fokker Dr1, the title of your build log should read "Shelf Queen 2025 GB - Fokker Dr1". That way we can easily track which threads relate to the Group Build and which do not.

10.   Please include in your build log some initial photos of the kit in its current state (started or unstarted). Progress update photos should be added to your build log.

11.   Once your model is completed, please also post it under the "Completed Models" board, again utilising the group build prefix as above but with the term "completed" added into the title, i.e. "Shelf Queen 2025 GB - Completed Fokker Dr1". Please also ensure you link your build log to the completed models post.

12.   Start date is 15 January 2025 and the GB will run for five months, closing at the end of 15 June 2025.

I know there's a few rules here, but hopefully nothing too complicated. Do let me know if there are any questions or clarifications needed.

I will pin this thread for the duration of the group build, and add to this thread at the completion of the group build with a summary post of the final completions.

Many thanks, and build on!

Cheers,

Brad C

This one is inspiring, Brad. I have quite a few kits that have been among my WW1 stash for decades. I'm in the midst of a two Pfalz 1/48th project, so it will be a few weeks before I can get started on the SQGB. I'll weigh in with a...

Roden 1/32nd Albatros D.III that's been sitting in the stash since 2006.

I can't guarantee that it won't be further delayed in the queue once I receive the two CSM N.11's that I preordered. ;)

Thanks Brad,
I'm determined to finish this Eduard "Pup" and can join in after that is complete.
I've started two Blue Max kits and one "Planet" kit, parts off sprues and all cleaned up but no adhesive has been used. I'll be in with one of these first.

If anyone has a preference as to what they would like to see first, please chime in.

Thanks !!!

Thanks Vickers and Allan!

Vickers - I reckon that 2006 Albie would fit in a treat!

Allan - i'd love to see the Roland built up; I have the Fly version and would love to see a 1/48 build of this aircraft :)

Personally, I am still unpacking my stash so it might be a week or two before I settle on a shelf queen to add, but rest assured, i'll be in it!

C'mon folks, let's get into it!

Cheers,

BC

Hi Brad! This is a great idea... an opportunity to get us going again... When it comes to Shelf Queens I am the king... or is that the Court Jester?? I'm just not sure how advanced the build must be to qualify... a few are close to the paint shop... and I have quite a few I have started threads on here already... Do they qualify? In the photie the Dr1, Spad, Bristol and Nieuport at least have threads... please let me know, no problem!

... And if anyone wants further pictures or info on any of these builds please let me know! Any votes for possible projects also good!

Regards,

Marc

Hi Marc! Any and all of those kits can qualify. Feel free to have multiple entries - the more the merrier I say!

Brad,
Would a previous finished model that has been severely damaged and in need of a total overhaul qualify?

Thanks,
Tim

Thanks,

I would say that a kit that has been 'deconstructed' at some point and has been sitting on the shelf awaiting 'reconstruction' is within the spirit of the game :)

Hi Brad,
My recent 're-start' of the 'KatModel' Phonix C.1 that I started in 2023 would count I guess?

Absolutely Mike! Plenty of recent conversation on this one, so it would be great to see her built up.

Can my Handley Page V/1500 scratch build be considered an on-and-off shelf queen? It is a pity a have so little time to model, but I'm still working on it. Mostly, I'm all over the place and I have been working on all the segments except the wings.

Brad, your post triggered me to get up and get going again!

Very nice way to kick off the new year - I really like it!

For once I actually dont have any WW1 kits on the shelf of doom or really anything besides 2 armor kits.

I am considering a CSM kit from the stash, but also had another GB in mind for WW2 bombers that starts 1 Feb.

Maybe I can make both... I will see!

Ok, so the time is approaching for the GB... I'm determined to do my bit in spite of my extremely poor record of finishing on time... But I first want to call on Allan to do that DH4... it looks wonderful! Here is my first choice: The WNW Albatross...

Why is my Albatross not ready yet? Get moving, Marc!

Ok, I am in..just dug up my Caproni Ca.42 from the beginning of this millennium. Scratchbuilt project; lacks the wheels, radiators, rudders, armament, finished paintwork, etc.  I started it long ago, but it was one of those models that was never completed and ultimately I more or less forgot about it. So this group build will come quite handy for me, as far the Caproni goes...hopefully all the way to the finish :)

Cheers, Skyhook

If I should finish my Nieuport in time, I mean in such a way that it makes sense to pick up that here again until time for this GB is up, then I would love to join in. I have a small diorama in my mind which is still in the back of my head since I had started this little armored car some years ago.

OK, the Eduard 1/72nd Nieuport 17's of mine have been languishing for years and years. I'll pitch in with at least one of those is that's ok.

Now HERE'S a question.....What if, just hear me out, what if we have a kit started by somebody else?!?!? HHmmmmm?

I just realized today that I couldn't live another day without a Hannover on the shelf. Evilbay has saved me yet again, problem is, it has been started by someone else, the cockpit is in, fuselage together.

I don't know if there is actually a category of builder that would build someone else's abandoned shelf queen. "Sick" comes to mind, "Pathetic" is another, I could go on....

Hi Allan - no rules against it; once it is in your stash then I would call it "your" shelf queen :)

This actually happened to me! I bought a Hansa Brandenburg D.I old Eduard kit from Evilbay and to my suprise the PE interior had already been put together. It didn't put me off and I just continued to build it.

My sincerest thanks to all who participated; I have enjoyed watching the wonderful projects come to completion (and i've also managed to live vicariously through you all along the way)!  ;D

I will get together a summary in the next week or so, once I am back home from work travel.

Thanks again!
