Title: RAF BE.2c (1/32, Lukgraph)
Post by: PrzemoL on November 04, 2024, 12:13:32 AM
So here is my current build - the newest Lukgraph version of BE.2c fully 3D-printed.

The preparation works are well under way, the surfaces are polished from delicate but still present traces of 3D print, the joints are armed with wire inserts, also the wings are reinforced with two solid sections of wire each.

Your headline sent me rushing to the Lukgraph website and, alas, it's 1/32  :)
There's nothing wrong with the Airfix kit but I wouldn't mind a highly detailed B.E.2c in 1/72.

Oh my... I am sorry, my mistype... It surely is 1/32.  The header is corrected.

I'm glad to see that my first real day back on the fourm since mid-September coincides with the kickoff of a new PrzemoL build... I'm greatly looking forward to following this one, my friend.

And Ehud, who knows what the future holds? With the explosion of 3DP kits it won't be long until someone puts out a new BE...

Yes, I'd initially seen the 1/72 header and passed by but will pay much greater attention now. I'm keen to see how the new 3D  Lukgraphs work out. (Nothing against 1/72 but I don't tend to follow the early stages, although I love seeing the finished subjects taking shape.)

Good start Przemo, although this still looks like a challenging build. Will follow with interest.

What did you use to polish away the printing artefacts?

That would also be intersting for me.

That 3D printing structurs scare me, especially on parts like motor or other delicate structures. Do you have some honest pre- and post-polishing pictures in order to see the effect? I would guess, it is highly depending on camera/light angels.

However, thank you so much for this new thread  :)

Looks like you're off to a solid start, Przemol! I really enjoy seeing how some of you guys drill and pin more positive connection points since that's a technique with which I've experienced mixed results. I'll be paying close attention to this topic of yours since I've got a Lukgraph Halberstadt in the stash and hope to add some more of their kits soon.

I am using several grades of sand paper.

The traces are barely visible, hard to photograph. But mayby here you will notice the difference between raw and polished strut. And the untreated element still not removed from the printing tree.
They are most notable in the sound you hear when polishing, clearly indicating the regular roughness of the surface.

Those butt joints require reinforcement, especially the control surfaces which will later be pulled by the control lines.

Thanks, Nigel.

The remaining control horns are ready. There will be some cheating with the rear rudder bar, its tips popping out of the fuselage will be modelled as separate bits and the main bar element fitted under the pilot seat (kit PE element modified) which is completely hidden is a pure guesswork, but needed only to provide the assembly points for the cables running in the cockpit from the pilot rudder bar.
I have also scratch built the pilot seat cushion as there was no wicker seat in the original.
Also the self made eyelets for the interior rigging were attached.

Thanks, Nigel and Gary.
Thanks, Mike, for the link to your build logs. I am surely going to follow your hints on BE.2c, even though the new 3D print version has some spots corrected.

And a small progress - a couple of new wire inserts to stabilize the wing tip protective hoops. And the too narrow bulkheads widened with thin plastic strips added.

Thank you, William and Kensar.

Looks like you are off to a great start.
I'm sorry if I missed this point if you already mentioned it, but are the PE reinforcements for the control horns part of the kit?

All the metal parts you see in the photos are from the kit PE fret. Kit instructions suggest glueing them in pairs but I find it still to be too thin. And besides that, there is a problem with drilling the holes for the eyelets. That is why I opted for a laminate of the kit supplied PE bit(s) and a thin plastic strips - it is much easier to drill the holes in the latter ones.

Todays progress on the interior. The instrument panel has the scratch built oil indicator pipe - made from a streched clear sprue and bits of self adhesive metal foil.

In the meantime I have prepared the RAF1a engine, adding the electric wires and little extensions on the supports so that it now nicely sits on the bearers.
The colours will be subdued with wash and dirt soon.

Now, wash is done on the fuselage and cabane struts, and a test fit of lower wings and one stabiliser for a taste.

Well, the speed has actually slowed down. I found a problem with interplane struts - they are about 2.5mm too short. I am working on the replacement. Also another small side project took the space at the bench. And the long awaited winter/summer holidays are coming - I will surely return to this build but not earlier than in February...

This is going to be a beautiful model - great what you are creating here, excellent work as always from you.

I have the full-printed version of the Halberstadt D.II from Lukgraph on my shelf - unfortunately I'm not very convinced by the quality of the kit, but that's another story.

Finally back to this build.

Restart with the interplane struts - new set of too short ones, each cut into two, plastic insert, wire reinforcement, cleaning of the joints, skewing of the ends to adjust them to the inclined connection with the wings, airbrushing, and a ready new set of 8 pieces, lengthened by 2.5mm each.

Thanks for your kind comments.

Yesterday I made a cardboard jig and today I took my courage to connect the lower wings with the fuselage. The joints are minimal, so I suppose it will need all the struts, the upper wings and the rigging, at least the landing lines, before I can safely take it from the jig.

Small but significant progress. Cabane struts attached. The centrepiece just rests dryfit to keep the geometry.

Operation upper wing has started! It must be done carefully and without removing the model from the jig, because the connection points between the lower wing and the fuselage are very delicate. I put all my trust in the strength of rigging to tighten it all.

Hi Przemo.
What type of paint did you use for fuselage painting ?
Very nice paint work.

I suppose you mean the linen colour...
It is my usual approach with Pactra Mid Stone as a base, then postshading with Clear tinted slightly with Vallejo Beige Brown, then brownish wash.  :)
