Title: 1/48 Roden BE2C
Post by: DaveB on October 09, 2024, 09:36:53 PM
Dear all,

Just completed Roden's kit of the BE2c.   This kit was given to me as a 60th birthday present earlier this year by fellow forum member 'Lone Modeller' (Steve) and good friend.   Cheers mate!!

This was a demanding kit from Roden but was a thoroughly enjoyable project.   The kit did fight me and I had a few hiccups along the way but all came together great at the end.

Built mostly from the box with just a couple of minor additions to the cockpits.   Bracing wires accomplished using smoke coloured mending thread and Oschi standard elastic thread for control wires.    Finished with the hairy stick as always and completed in the markings to represent Be2c of RNAS observers school, Eastchurch, Isle of Sheppey, Kent.  Apparantly the only British aircraft with five numeral serial number.

Photos have come out a bit dark (dull in UK today) so struggling with the light.

Hopefully this one is a little clearer

Very nice work indeed and a great finish, considering you used the old school hairy stick!

Good to see one of these, very well executed!

As for the serial number, that does make one wonder, did we (British) really construct fewer than 10,000 aircraft in WWI? Must go and look this up...

Also glad to see that there are plenty of us brush painters still active   ;D

That is super Dave - I do have a soft spot for this type but I am not really sure why. Good to see another representative from Eastchurch too - you will know why!

Looking forward to seeing this at the next club meeting.

Stephen.

Looks great!  I wonder if you could elaborate on the hiccups and fights along the way.  I have this kit and was wondering what to except.

Gentleman, thank you all very kindly!

Looks great!  I wonder if you could elaborate on the hiccups and fights along the way.  I have this kit and was wondering what to except.

Main issues were mostly of my making, although the kit gave me issues as follows:

Tidying up the fuselage halves was difficult around the chin cowling area as the plastic is very thin in this area;

the lower wing is very weak due to the nature of how it was on the real thing - this aircraft attaches to fuselage via two bars which is a problem with a plastic model being fragile.  I managed to break the wing on port side whilst handling.  Repair entailed drilling out these bars and inserting some metal wire to give a stronger fit when re-attaching to fuselage;

upper wing attachment and alignment (in conjunction with cabane strut setup) was very fiddly and quite weak until I was able to rig to give it the necessary structural strength;

the kit provides a small section of clear plastic film where you have to cut out the marked out shape of the windscreens.   This is okay but the bending around to fit in fron of the cockpit openings is not easy and then really difficult to get a good fit - mine ended up a bit of a mess in this location;

exhaust pipes wing mounting brackets need bending upwards to enable a good fit to upper wing

Don't let the above issues put you off - you may find you have no issues here; and in any case, this is basically a very good kit that really looks the part when built.

Forget to mention one more serious issue with my kit -

both undercarriage legs were broken on the sprue on the lower part where the axel would attach.   I therefore had to repair both these and scratch build the missing parts which was time consuming and fiddly.

Looks great and thanks highlighting a few things to be aware of - having built a few of their ww1 armour kits, the end results  be excellent but it takes a little more car.
Cheers

Dave,

Thanks for the reply about the model and building issues.  Always good to know what to look out for.   :)

A nice one. There is something in the lines of BE.2c's...
