Hi!
The Albatros is now ready. I have made a thread about the construction process and techniques in the Dave Wilson tribute topic, so if you want to know how this one has been built, please check out that one….i believe you will find all or at least most of the answers there.
But in short, this bird is completely made of plasticard, styrene sheet, bamboo, balsa and some items from the spares box (the spinner has been modified from a 1/48 Spitfire droptank, observers MG is partly a Roden spare as is the exhaust…all the decal crosses originate from several spares, Roden mainly. The arrows are cut from black and white decal sheets. The numbers are hand painted).
The rigging is heat stretched black sprue.
It was a long and enjoyable build and I took special care of documenting the construction. I hope this model for its own part is a small tribute for Dave…we are here because of him!
I took several pics of the plane today. Some have hard morning light and the others more subdued late afternoon vibe. I also painted a background to make the pics more interesting. Enjoy!

Btw, i just realized that this one is probably the first model project in many years that I have actually properly finished!
-
WOW! That is a real beauty. Looks like it was worth the effort.
-
STUNNING! SIMPLY STUNNING. What a marvellous scratch build.
-
It turned out really well, excellent work!
-
I am very happy that you like it! Thank you, Gentlemen!
And special thanks to Joachim, who supplied me with some excellent reference material on the subject. The model became better, thanks to him :)
Cheers, Skyhook
Ps.
This won’t be the last Albatros you will see coming from my direction; J.1 will be completed in the near future and my old models of C.VII and C.XII are updated to better standards on the side. And if that is not enough, I have done the basic components for a C.X :)
-
just lovely! thanks for sharing!
-
Like I said on the build thread, If I hadn't followed along I would think this is a Modern Injection kit! Very Well Done Tribute!

Fantastic model, again. Love the wood and camoflagued wongs combination.
I’m especially in awe of the propeller, I never manage to get the German ones that good.
-
Thank you all! I am very happy about your comments :)
Btw,
Torbjörn, thanks about those comments about the propeller. I forgot to mention that it is actually carved from some 1/48 spare ww2 propeller. I firstly thought of using some Roden spare as basis, but the were not long enough (they are from Albatros and Fokker fighter kits). I cut two blades out of a 4-bladed propeller and cut and sanded them into shape. Then I glued them to the spinner. After some filing and filling, I painted them with acrylic paints. C.V had exeptionally big propeller for a two seater, because of the reduction gear the 8-cylinder engine had… so a lot of air moving with relatively low rpm.
Now to come to think of it, i just realised that Roden Gotha kits would have had big spare propellers!
Cheers, Skyhook

Great model, great Tribute, great story, pretty well great actually.

Superb work all round. This is a great scratchbuild, it's been a pleasure to follow the build along and see how you approached and solved the various challenges along teh way. And the end result looks fantastic, well worth the effort. You need to finish more projects.... ;) ;D
-
Thank you very much! :D
I will certainly go ahead with my other Albatroses as soon as possible….this project has reminded me that however great and relaxing it is to build a ww2 kit (which i have completed quite a few last year or so), the challenge of a scratchbuilding is even more like that…well, maybe not so relaxing always, but at least you have just yourself to blame for inaccurasies etc!
Photographing a 1/72 model is quite unforgiving, when the plane is many times bigger in close-ups. But there’s also a good point in seeing how one could improve a thing or two next time. With this one I had to paint the cowling panels a few times over the primer…i used the very thin Xtracolor oil paint, but in close-ups one can see that the sharpness disappeared from the lines etc. Next time i will pay attention to the paint finish and its thickness more and try to mix the colour better and try to get it with just a layer or two.
Cheers, Skyhook

Looking forward to your next Albatros two seaters Skyhook!
-
Great effort in scratchbuilding. Congratulations!
-
That's an impressive scratchbuild with a lovely outcome- one of the Albatros types that we don't see very often. Bravo!
-
Properly impressive piece of work and great tribute - congrats

That’s a stunning build, a rarer type too.
-
Extremely nice model of a rarely (never?) seen full-size beauty!
To share references is the reason of clubs and forums, swarm intelligence.

Incredible scratch building workmanship -
I actually thought it was kit to begin with,

Thank you very much for your very encouraging comments! This gives me great impetus to get the other Albatroses ready :)

This build was an absolute joy to follow and the end result looks more like a 1/48 scale Albie than a 1/72.

Truly an amazing example of the scratch building art. Stunning.
-
That is truly outstanding. For a scratch build that its certainly top notch in every department.
I did follow your build intermittently - as stated elsewhere life keeps getting in the way of modelling for me at the moment and will continue to do so for a while longer, but seeing this makes me want to get back to my tray and start again.
I am really looking forward to seeing you build the Albatros types - and I will be looking for ideas for scratch building my own models.
Stephen.

Can't believe I missed this one being completed - an amazing scratch build and a fitting tribute in all respects, well done sir!
Cheers,

That is some wonderful modeling right there!

Thanks guys, very encouraging comments! I hope the build thread will encourage people to try out scratchbuilding. Just start with a Morane Saulnier type L?that is the perfect starting point :) At least for me it was?
Cheers, Skyhook

Great piece of scratchbuilding. I like the comment "first one I have properly finished for years". I know where you're coming from there.
Alan.
