Hello everyone,
Here is my latest completion, the little 1/72 Revell Fokker Dr.1 Triplane. This is the more modern 2003 moulding (not the old 1960s kit).
It is painted in the markings of 62-victory ace Ltn Ernst Udet’s Fokker Dr.1 586/17, Jasta 4, Laon, France, May 1918. Udet was the second top scoring German ace of WW1, behind Manfred Von Richthofen, aka the “Red Baron”. Udet went on to have a coulourful post war career and was a high-profile member of the Luftwaffe in WW2.
All markings were painted, save for the weights table under the cockpit, the datum line on the forward fuselage, and the “Axial” logos on the propeller, which were decals. The scheme is taken from the Eduard “Du Doch Nicht” instructions. Paints were SMS acrylic lacquers for the most part, with the ‘Fokker streaking’ finish on the forward fuselage and lower wings done with oil paints.
The kit is lovely out of the box, but I made some minor additions to the kit; I added seat belts, rudder pedals, replacement Spandau machine guns using Gaspatch resin items, chin and nose panels, cowling retaining strap, under-fuselage stitching, fuselage grab handles, and I replaced the engine with an Eduard quick boost item with spark plug ignition leads added from wire.

I feel that this is the best 1/72 Fokker Dr.1 on the market. The only criticisms I can level at this kit is firstly, the use of bright red plastic, and secondly, the undercarriage axle wing is angled too far downwards at the rear, which was a bit too hard for me to fix, so I left it as is. Other than that, I think the kit very nicely captures the look of Fokker’s little dreidecker!

Thanks for looking!

It's colourful, tiny and has lots of wings - whats not to like ;D
Super modelling (as always) Brad. Really enjoyed following the build thread and am already looking forward to the next one

Wow, that's an absolute gem Brad, well done! It's been a pleasure to follow along with the build and the end result is fantastic. I am sure Dave would have enjoyed following this one.

One of My Favorite Dr1 schemes and your rendition is Superb! The Streaking and weathering really stand out, as do the additions you made to the kit. Outstanding Tribute build !

Such a magnificent build Brad! I'm afraid to build my version of this now. ;) There is absolutely so much to love about this build, I'll be coming back to look at this multiple times.
Some questions:
- The stitching underneath: is this p/e? If not, how did you do it?
- The cowling retaining strap, did you carve a channel for it first? What material did you use to make the strap?
- I really like your very subtle rendition of the fuselage framework underneath and the wing rib taping. How did you accomplish this?

A great looking triplane Brad, every bit looks top class and I especially like the streaking.
-
Bravo, another stellar build and fitting tribute, congrats.

Excellent work..very good detailing and weathering. It rather looks like it’s in 1/48 scale or bigger in the photos… Impressive modelling!
Cheers, Skyhook

Everything is superb about this build. Well done, you should be proud of it.

Beautiful little Fokker Brad, you've outdone yourself once again!
Great finish and detail, the streaking is exceptional, and the cowling retention strap , an oft missed detail, perfectly represented. A beauty of a model and very fine tribute.
Cheers,
Lance

Beautiful little triplane. Fantastic work.

What a beauty, Brad. Not that I expected anything else... Fantastic work all around.

GREAT bravo :) :) :)

A kit I know well but far, far better than anything I've ever done with it. Bravo Brad, on its own it's a great model and also a wonderful tribute to Dave.

Beautiful Fokker model, one of my favourite schemes!
-
Thank you everyone, I am truly humbled by your kind words! :)
Warren, in regards to your questions:
- The stitching is indeed Eduard 1/72 PE from their stitching set.
- The cowling retaining strap is made from thick metal foil (the same found inside certain coffee cans, or here in Australia, in Milo tins). It cuts reasonably well, and as a soft metal it is quite bendable. As it is thin, there was no need to carve a channel for the strap, I simply glued it around the end of the cowling using superglue.
- The rib taping was preshading over strips of 0.4mm tape. I then oversprayed light coats of the final colours over the pre-shading until it just showed through enough.
Hopefully that helps?
Thanks again!

Beautiful job, Brad, as always. I've been debating what scheme to do my Meng triplane in, and I think this one is going to be a prime contender.

Bravo! Well done :)

Brad, I share everybody else's appreciation of your work here. It is a beauty.
Since I am still struggling along with a heap of old-mold Revell tripes, I notice particularly that you have the portside step and the two grab handles back aft, on your model. Did any of that come in the new-mold kit?
I scrathbuilt the step and the grab handles and am not delighted with the clunkiness of my parts. If you scratched them, what did you use?
Thanks,
Rick in Seattle

Very nicely done Brad.
But then we've come to expect that!

Brad,
You have to love those triplanes. Excellent work and great amount of detail.

Thanks again everyone!
Rick - good spot on the grab handles and foot step. The Revell kit indeed comes with a foot step, but it is a bit 'chunky' as it is injection moulded. It does not come with the grab handles. I had an Eduard etched fret for the Dr1 in the stash, which I borrowed these from. I think some of the Toms Modelworks German Exterior etched sets have similar little detail 'bits' that would suit. Otherwise, some fine wire bent to shape should also suffice, I reckon.
Cheers again!

Outstanding paint job! I always learn so much when you post your work.

Stunning build in every detail. Great pleasure to see such a beauty.

As has been comented already: plenty of wings and a very colourful finish, especially the streaking. The extra details are stunning - the more so as this is in God's Own Scale.
A very worthy tribute to Dave.

Very nice looking! And as you painted everything (other than a few of the smallest items) makes it even more impressive. Incorrect spacing on those stripes would have kind of bunged the whole effect but yours look spot on. And I really like the subtle weathering, especially on the underside of the aircraft. Adds so much to the overall appearance of the model. That's something I need to start working on.
Take care
Scott
