In keeping with my desire to build all of my Pegasus 1/72 kits, the Pfalz D.XII is off the shelf. This list is numbered 1023 and was released in the 1980s. For those who watched the Roland build, you can see the progress Chris Gannon made in the production of his Pegasus line. The sides are not as thick and there is far more metal parts available. It will be an out of the box build, although I may replace the engine if I can find one in my stash. The kit decals are nice but I may build the version on the Datafile just to add some difficulty to the kit. There must be something wrong with me. Any way, construction will start in a day or two and I will shoot for a completion date in the first week of August.

Ooooh just looking at this one on the shelf and wondering weather the Toko version might be a tad easier (If not as satisfying) ;)

Paul,
The answer to your question is yes. I have the Toko completed and it was an easy build. And very satisfying. However, you do not a mission to complete all of the Pegasus kits. To do that, the D12 stands in my way. Trust me, after the Roland, the D12 will be a piece of cake.
I have the wings and fuselage sanded and the fit is good. I have decided to keep the kit engine as only the top of the engine will be visible. See, I did learn something from the Roland.

I'm very excited to see this one. The D.XII is a neat machine and I'm keen to see what you can turn this kit into.
-
Good choice, I built the Toko one back in my 1/72 days which was probably a little better but I am sure this will look great.
There must be something wrong with me.
No comment.......... ;) :)

I'm sure it will be a good one Dennis, I'll follow with interest.

The latest progress is the building of the interior and it is compete with the exception of the instrument panel. The upper wing is waiting for rib tapes. The upper lozenge is from Americal decals and the lower is from Pegasus. The Americal decals went on without any problems and the Pegasus decals are fragile at best and require a clear coat before they hit the water.
The wings were painted purple that match one of the colors of the lozenge pattern. This way I do not have a kit colored strip along the leading edge. It is coming along very nicely and according to the kit decal sheet, it was kitted in 1994. This kit was listed as #1023 and he had come a long way in the quality of his kits.

Continue to march Dennis! This one is coming along well.

Coming along nicely. I remember the days when Americal were the must have decals. I still have a load in my decal stash.....

The top wing is complete, the fuselage is closed up, the vertical tail is decaled and painted. There are no surprises yet. I did realize that there are no under carriage parts so I will have to make them. The ribbing tape went well for its age. So far there is no rib tape on the under side of the wings. The jury is out on whether or not I put them on. A lot of trouble for a small return on your money. The lower wing will be joined to the fuselage as the next step.

Good progress, I am sure you will be able to ace the undercarriage.

C'mon, you know the answer to that ;) I'm all for leaving off detail you can't see, but rib tapes on only one side of the wing will be quite noticeable.........
-
Nigel,
Sigh. You are right about the rib tapes. I have found in my stash some under side rib tapes that will not float off when I take them out of the water. And they are darker and will be seen when as the other set was lighter and you could not see the tapes.
I thank everyone for their positive input on this build. The lower wing has been attached to the fuselage and putty work will be minimal. I will paint the fuselage before adding the lower lozenge so as to avoid over spray. Progress is slow but steady and I am having a good time.

I bought a bunch of Americals, way back when, but it seemed that most of the lozenge sheets were painfully out of register.
I've considered using one and using paint to touch up the rogue slivers, but the color-matching and the tedium haven't seemed worth the effort yet.

were painfully out of register.
I ordered a decal sheet for French bombers, and the registration on a lot of the unit insignia was terrible. I think towards the end he was getting rather sloppy, and knowing what he was going through in his real life I'm amazed he even tried to make a go of these at all. Sometimes ordering from him was a crap shoot towards the end.
However, for years and years he was the only game in town, and even today some of his subjects have never been touched..
My apologies for the thread drift.
Dennis, it's coming along quite well IMHO, and as Nigel said, you'll knock out that landing gear with no worries.

Time to paint the fuselage. The blue on the tail and nose were masked off and the light blue on the underside was painted. The three colors of green and brown were painted freehand and left to dry. The black stripe was masked off. The yellow marking were done with a stencil and sprayed. These two colors are subjective as there is no record of the actual colors. It was then that the glaring mistakes were corrected. Nothing like a nice close up-shot to reveal flaws. These have been corrected. With the addition of the markings, the fuselage is complete. The model is progressing without any surprises, which is always a plus.

Coming together very nicely Dennis, and it's good to see those rib tapes..... ;) ;D

Rick,
All of my Americal decals have stood the test of time so I may got gotten my early in his production. They did take a little more work but they were the only game in town at the time. Pegasus decals were top notch but they have not stood up in the test of time. Most of my Pegasus decals floated away in the water. I have seen and heard of some builders making their own lozenge but I was never that brave.

Undercarriage, tail surfaces and lower wing decals added. Still need to add the German markings on lower wing and trim the rib tape After that I will drill locating holes for the rigging and mount the top wing. Since the struts are in one piece, I may not have to break out the Aeroclub jig. We will see.

She's really starting to look the part now. And those rib tapes on the underside were definitely worth it ;)

The D.XII is now complete. There was a struggle between me and the struts but I got it looking reasonably ok. On what should have been an easy kit to rig, there were harsh words between me and the model. I am going to have to improve my lighting as there is difficulty in seeing the holes that I lace the rigging through. I doubt it is old age; has to be the lighting. Yeah, sure. We all know. It just takes longer for some to admit it.
This is my second D.XII, the first being the Toko kit shown in the last photo. A much easier kit to build, by the way.
I now down to four Pegasus kits to build: the DH-2, Sopwith 1 1/2 strutter, HB-W-29 and the Albatros D.I/II. There are three 1 1/2 strutters, three W-29's, two DH-2's and two Albatros D.I's currently in my collection. Any suggestions on which one I should build next? Help me decide.
Next up will be a Roden 1/32 Sopwith Triplane, 1/350 Resin WW2 destroyer and some repairs to some existing kits.
Me busy. Nah, just another day at the office.

Looks fabulous Dennis 8)
Given the choice I'd go with the HB I reckon (although I've made a start on prepping some DII parts) :-\
Top tip for spotting the end of the rigging thread is to use a swipe of black Sharpie to colour it; this was a bit of a game changer for me when it was suggested - hopefully that'll help

Nice pair of D.XIIs.
The guy who flew the Toko kit was named Klein though.

My thanks to everyone for their positive comments. Paul, I will definitely try the black tip on my next model. Joachim, error noted and corrected.

Nice work Dennis, she looks good alongside your other DXII. Another vote for the W29 from me......
-
Very nicely done! .I like both model schemes.

Congrats, Dennis, another little gem added to the collection!
My vote for your next-up is for the W-29, just because it's a type I fantasized about building back in the 1960s—years before anybody dreamed of kitting it. My son Curt just unearthed a 1/48 vacuform of one (even the stuts were vacuformed, wouldn't that have been fun?) that dates back around the 1980s.
