Hi folks,
I've been unwell for the past few weeks, but I've recently returned to the bench and have been working on Eduard's original 1/48 Camel (https://www.scalemates.com/kits/eduard-8450-sopwith-camel--115375) as my tribute to Dave. Somewhat unorthodox - and I hope it's okay - I'm actually modelling a replica owned by Sir Peter Jackson that I believe Dave may have seen fly at New Zealand airshows, rather than a wartime example.
I'll get photos up soon (it slipped my mind to do so sooner).
-
Great to see you back in the saddle Zac - looking forward to this one!
Cheers

Glad you are feeling better and joining in the group build. I am sure Dave would be keen to see this one built.
-
Sorry to hear you were unwell but it's great you are now OK. Looking forward to seeing the camel.
Alan.

Good news Zac, looking forward to this.
-
Glad you are feeling better Zac. I am looking forward to your Camel Build!

Looking forward to seeing your build, Zac, and glad to hear that you're on the mend. Any Camel is a good Camel in my book!

Thank you so much for the kind words folks! I won't go into the gory detail beyond saying I've had crippling headaches and a couple of dental surgeries to try and fix things. I'm afraid I'm not out of the woods quite yet but I have turned a corner.
Just a quick shot of The New Bench (we moved downstairs to our own apartment just after my first surgery) with the Camel:

I'd set it aside for a couple of weeks and it turns out I was further along than I thought!

As I mentioned in my first post, this is a model of a replica rather than a wartime machine so the interior is a bit different from other Camels we've seen here!! Owned by Sir Peter Jackson (and one of the first two flying aircraft he bought), my subject is a full-size Camel replica powered by a 160 Gnome Monosoupape in the markings of New Zealand pilot Clive Collett - who happens to hail from Blenheim, the town I now call home! Jamo's gallery of this machine (https://jamesfahey.smugmug.com/Sopwith-Camel-replica-ZK-JMU) has been an invaluable resource and I remain incredibly grateful for his generosity in making such comprehensive galleries available for all to use.
This kit was purchased from a forum member, will use an engine supplied by another, and will wear decals provided by yet another - all of whose names, I'm ashamed to say, escape me at the moment! But it felt appropriate that this be my tribute to Dave, not just for the Kiwi connection but due to the sheer number of forumites involved in getting me this project!

Great start Zac. Thanks for posting the gallery, great reference. Only negative in the gallery is it shows DeMarco.
-
Great Start Zac and nice to have the other forum members connection too. I'm sure Dave would be delighted to see the forum being used in such a positive way
Paul
ps - Hope the headaches start to ease after the dental work I know how debilitating that sort of thing can be
-
Great start Zac. Like the others have said the connection to other Forum Members makes it that much better as a tibute!

I was able to get some more paint on various bits today. I'm not sure why I decided painting almost the whole thing on the sprue was a good idea but here we are!

Hopefully a little more progress tomorrow - focus is hard to maintain at the moment but I'm doing mybest for Dave.
-
Great progress, Zac - just the thing for some quality recuperation.

-
Very nice progress! The colors and wood is spot on!
Hope you recover well :)
-
There are so many subcomponents in WWI aircraft that are all different colours there's a lot to be said for painting as much as you can on the sprues. Keep going, it will be nice to see another one for Dave.
-
Another different from Normal build method that is working well! Lovely wood panel and overall finish Zac!

Looks great so far, Zac, love those colors on the fuselage. And I've taken to painting a lot of stuff on the sprues myself since I began hanging out on the forum, my skillset has grown by leaps and bounds in the past year or so!
As far as Jamo's photos go, hear, hear! they've been an invaluable aid in the course of the Aviattic Eindecker project.

Just found this Zac. I used to paint all the parts on the sprue in my younger days - there is much to be said for doing so especially if the parts are very small. Cleaning up joins later was not too much of a problem if they fitted well, but if they did not......!
I do hope that you are feeling better at last - having been through a bad patch of my own not so long ago I can sympathise with your lack of energy.
Stephen.
-
Thanks folks! I hope to do a bit more on this tomorrow.
Thanks Stephen, I'm feeling better physically but have some other work to do. Motivation has been a struggle but I'm eager to finish this for Dave.
-
Great start Zac. Glad to hear you are getting your Mojo back. Looking forward to seeing more.
Tim
-
Thanks Tim. Of late I've been distracted by a (second!) return to Warhammer 40,000 miniatures but I am determined to finish this for Dave!
-
Your Camel is coming along quite nicely. As always, I am looking forward to more!

I've recently gotten back into miniature wargaming, including buying specialist paints. One is a "Technical" paint, a wash called Nuln Oil which looked like it could help make the engine and other parts seem more realistic. I think it works!

That looks very effective, nice work. Those washes are a key part of my armoury, especially for metalwork. The Army Painter do their own versions which are cheaper than the GW equivalents if you can find them in your neck of the woods.
-
Very nice looking engine! Those washes are effective :)
-
Great to see you working on the model again, Zac. Nice progress!
-
Magic in a jar, that stuff! Looks good!

Thanks folks! It really is a revelation. Painting rotaries (and leaving the adjacent panels which should be stained blank) has always left me less than happy with the result, but doing a couple of light coats with this wash has boosted my confidence and made me feel much prouder of the end result.

Fortunately I've watched GW's tutorials which taught me their paints actually need to be thinned - which explains why my previous attempts at high school and then 10yr ago were so iffy - so they're lasting much longer than I expected and with nicer results. But thank you for the heads-up!

The engine and washes look excellent Zac! Nice work and showing some progress!!
