Hi all
As the build of the Bristol Scout 1264 will be completed soon, I've started on the next build
This will be the Albatros D.V, Serial No: D.2006/17 as flown by Ltn.der.Reserve Bernhard Kilian of Jasta 21b during September 1917
This is a 'Wingnut Wings' model kit
Little information is recorded for Ltn.der.Reserve Bernhard Kilian, other than he was born in Neideburg in 1894
He served with Jasta 21 until his death in a flying accident at Pauvres airfield in December 1917
He was not reported to have been awarded any combat victories

Hi Nigel,
Yes I have the Pheon decal set 32011,
Mike

Looks like it's going to be a cracker (He says pulling up a chair and opening some popcorn) ;D

Nice choice Mike. As always I look forward to your detailed build!

Looks like an interesting build Mike, and I look forward to following your progress. Any idea what that device is mounted to the right of the cockpit opening?
Cheers,

Hi Gary,
I thinks it's possibly a flare pistol, mounted on a vertical tube, such that the pilot can load a flare, lock then fire the pistol (directed away to the rear right of the aircraft).
It looks like the breach is open, not closed and locked.
Possibly a similar pistol to the Hebel M1894.
Just forward of the pistol is a flare holder rack,,

Hi all,
Now I've finished the Bristol Scout and Macchi M.5 builds for others, I can get back my modelling.
So I'll now be progressing the Albatros D.V build,
Mike
-
Hi all
The forward sides of the fuselage halves have pre-molded circular access panels and cooling louvres
The cooling louvres have no slots under them through the fuselage
I've chosen to replace both with 3D printed parts from 'Proper Plane'
‘Proper Plane’ Albatros D.V/D.Va louvres (RD-011)
‘Proper Plane’ Albatros D.V/D.Va inspection hatches (RD-015)
I've removed the pre-molded panels and louvres from the fuselage sides.
I've also drilled cooling slots through the fuselage sides. These will have the louvres fitted over them
I've also drilled slots in the lower, rear of the fuselage halves for the lower elevator control cables
'Wingnut Wings' issued correction sheets for the instruction manual
These require the removal of pre-molded internal cockpit detail from the left fuselage half and removal of pre-molded straps from the lower, rear of both fuselage halves

Lovely attention to detail already Mike. Those louvres look really good, a very nice addition to the model.
-
Hi all
I've to paint the fuselage internal parts
This includes creating wood and leather finishes
The light colour wood finish is ‘Windsor & Newton’ Griffin Alkyd oil paint (Raw Sienna) applied by brush over 'Tamiya' Desert Yellow (XF59) base coat
The dark colour wood finish is ‘Windsor & Newton’ Griffin Alkyd oil paint (Burnt Umber) applied by brush over 'Tamiya' Desert Yellow (XF59) base coat
The leather finish on the pilots seat is ‘Ammo-Mig’ Oil brusher (Earth) and when semi-dry, stipple brushed ‘Ammo-Mig’ Oil brusher (Dark Brown) over 'Tamiya' Desert Yellow (XF59) base coat

Excellent woodwork! I was trying to remember where the serial # cutoff was for the different forward underside panels on early DV aircraft. I know the one I did for instance, had the early style.
RAGIII
-
Nice progress Mike, the wood is looking good. Nice realistic colours as well.
-
Hi all,
The fuselage is now ready to be closed up.
I've added the cockpit control cables for the rudder and elevator (ailerons will come later)
Also pipe/tubes from the water pump greaser and the starter magneto
The control rod from the engine spark advance control lever can't be added until the fuselage is closed up, as it has to route around or through a cockpit frame
The engine has ignition leads to the spark plugs but not from the magnetos
Wiring those is a waste as they can't really be seen on the completed model

That's a lovely looking engine and interior, very nice work indeed.
Wiring those is a waste as they can't really be seen on the completed model
I agree totally, life is too short for including details that can't be seen on the finished model (even with a penlight and dental mirror!)

Gorgeous and thorough work Mike!

Beautiful work! I have an HGW etch set for the Albatros, but the Proper Plane parts look far better than those. Good to know for the future.

Hi all,
The fuselage is now closed up.
The kit supplied machine guns were replaced with the ‘Spandau’ 08/15 extended loading handle (14-32061) from 'Gaspatch'.
These needed to be modified to allow them to locate correctly in the fuselage front/rear gun mounts,
Mike
(https://www.thatoneplease.co/buildlogs/ALBATROS-D.V/guns1.jpg)

Those guns do offer an improvement over the PE and plastic from the kit.
RAGIII
-
I don't think I've commented on this one? Beautiful work Mike! I love the wood tones and the detail inside.
-
Superb work again Mike. I really like the Gaspatch guns. I’m going to have to try out the 1/72 offerings.
Tim
-
Wow, Mike, you are cruising! Great results all around!!!
-
Hi all
This aircraft had what seems to be a mirror, flare pistol and flare rack located on the right side of the fuselage, just forward from the cockpit opening
The flare pistol appears to have been mounted on a supported tube, so that the pilot could load a flare, lock then fire the pistol (directed away to the rear right of the aircraft)
The breach of the pistol looks to be open, not closed and locked.
Possibly the pistol is of the 'Hebel M1894' type
To represent this I used a 'Wingnut Wings' flare pistol from my 'spares' and cut the barrel off and pinned it in position using 0.2 mm diameter rod
The mounting was made using a combination of 1.4 and 0.8 diameter tube with 0.4 mm diameter rod

Brilliant work on the flare pistol. After seeing your scratch work the original picture makes more sense now.
-
That is superb modelling work Mike, and admirable attention to detail.
-
Hi Mike,
very beautiful detail work on your D.V.
I like it very much - I am an absolute fan of such fine details that are often only recognizable at second glance.
That's the salt in the soup.
But allow me a hint:
The first Albatros production lots did not yet have the wooden panel joints running transverse to the direction of flight under the engine (from the sheet metal of the nose to the front edge of the wooden wing root).
These were still installed longitudinally.
Unfortunately, I have no exact information about the factory number from which the longitudinal joints were changed to transverse joints.
The 2006/17 certainly belonged to the production batch of the longitudinal panels.
See picture of the immediate predecessor of the 2005/17
I think it would not be too late to fill the transverse joints and engrave the longitudinal joints on the model. In the picture below you can see how many panels there were and where the joints should be.
Unfortunately, Wingnut Wings did not include this small detail in their mold for the D.V.
Correctly, two hulls with different joint shapes should have been integrated into the D.V kit.
Or, as with their later kits, an “early” and a “late” version. ::)
In the Albatros D.Va kit, transverse joints are correct.
Another eye-catching detail on the wings are the “Nicht auftreten” (Do not step on it) warnings for the mechanics.

Hi Bertl and Rich,
I did look into your build Rich of the aircraft as I'd seen your query before.
My problem was that there is photographic evidence of my build, serial number 2006/17/
Although I searched it never occurred to me to look for similar production batch photographs.
Thankfully Bertl did and found serial number 2005/17.
That same batch aircraft clearly shows longitudinal, not transverse, underside panels.
It also seems to confirm that the batch was fitted with just the lower wing drag wires and did not include the drag wires for the upper wing, which later aircraft had.
So thanks guys, I'll modify my fuselage accordingly ;),

Hi all,
Just a quick update as I work on the Phonix D.I as well.
The fuselage top green has been applied.
This was ‘Hataka’ (Orange line) Dark Moss Green (C246) with Light Green (C020) to a ratio of 50/50%.
Thinned with ’Mr. Colour’ Levelling Thinners 400 by arbout 10%.
Now onto the plywood covering,

Hi Nigel,
Not sure.
I usually brush oils for wood effects.
However, I have the plywood decal set from 'Proper Plane', which I might try this time.
I've previously had a go with 'HGW' wood decals, but found them too fragile.
We'll see,
Mike
-
Lovely.

I've often been tempted to try decals but it seems difficult getting them to conform around the curved areas. I see that some of the Proper Plane sets are tailored for the DV, so if you use those I'll be interested to see how they turn out.

Hi Nigel,
I had used the 'Proper Plane' wood decal set for the Roland D.VI model by 'Wingnut Wings'.
I wrote a booklet on how to apply those decals.
Alex had it on their website, but no longer as the decal set is no longer available.
However, the techniques are just as applicable to the Albatros set.
I've emailed you a copy as it might be of interest,
Mike

Looking wonderful Mike.
-
Hi all,
Progress on the Albatros.
Fuselage painted and plywood effect by Raw Sienna oil paint over Dark Yellow base coat.
Decals from the 'Pheon' set.
Kit circular access panels and cooling louvres removed and slots made under louvers.
Replacement were from 'Proper Plane.
'Aviattic' decals used for flying surfaces and on a mid-grey base coat (to slightly darken the decal colours).
Wing decals are from the 'Wingnut Wings' decal sheet.
All clear gloss coated to protect painted surfaces and decals from future handling, but will be semi-matte for final finish,

Hi Nigel,
Despite a smooth and glossy surface, I had problems with patches of silvering on the first few decals I applied, even with PVA added to the decal water.
Therefore I reverted to using oils instead.
Anyway I think some wood effect decals are overstated with the wood grain too heavy and obvious.
When I've stood next to actual aircraft, the wood grain is there, but I think less obvious than some decals.
Just my take and others may disagree ;)
Mike
-
I think your wood looks great - there's a hint of grain and I suppose that it would be more visible if one crept closer to the actual model.

I agree! Of course, I have always been a "Less is Best" guy with wood grain in scale! Lovely DV Mike!

Well, that's my take too, I totally agree ;) Oils are more subtle and controllable, it looks like you got a really good finish on this one.
-
Lovely progress, fine colours. I do prefer painting the wood over the decals, too. Yours is looking great.
-
Hi Mike,
very nice progress on your albatros.
The fuselage and the coloring on the wings look really good - I'm looking forward to the overall result.
One small detail:
The retaining plate for the turnbuckles on the wing root should be made of wood, not metal.
So no gray-green primer on these two plates.
It doesn't matter whether D.V or D.Va, this was built in the same way on both series.

Hi all,
The basic fuselage is complete.
For this particular aircraft, I've added:
Modified 'Gaspatch' machine guns.
Centrally suspended central gun sight (above the machine guns).
Gun sight viewing hole in the windscreen.
Altimeter in left side of cockpit.
Rear view mirror.
Flare pistol on its mounting.
Flare rack.
Kit supplied engine exhaust pipe hollowed out.
Now it's onto weathering the fuselage,
Mike

Hi Mike,
........ I just noticed this while looking at your pictures:
I think Pheon made a small mistake here - the weight table was not painted on the right side of the fuselage.
Neither on the Albatros D.V, nor on the D.Va.

Hi Mike,
Perhaps it is better to mask the decals in the necessary places and then paint over the table - then apply some more wood grain.
Then you can also change the elbow contour from round to pointed (see original).

Excellent work on this beautiful scheme Mike. I have a question about the ring sights on the Spandau jackets. Is that bracing piece running from the top to the rear just part of the 3-D printing or an actual part of the sight?
Thanks,
Tim
-
Hi all,
Thanks to Bertl for spotting the decal errors.
I've removed the capacity data decal from the right side of the fuselage.
Also re-shaped the elbow of the 'jester' decal on both sides of the fuselage, to better represent the actual marking,

Is there somewhere you demonstrate that subtle mottling on the wings, that's the effect I'm looking for on a Roland CII to break up the all blue/grey.

Hi Alan,
I apply 'Flory Models' fine clay (Dark Dirt or Grime) wash over a semi-matte clear coat.
Then remove what I want using a slightly damp tissue or brush.
The method is detailed in most of my PDF build logs in the Weathering chapter and in the construction chapters.
Click the link in my signature and go to the 'Logs' pages on my site.
You can download any of the build logs from there,
