Hello All,
Well the recent activity with the Phonix really made my WWI paper modeling juices start to ferment. I'm currently working on a paper Me-410 but I'm really missing the WWI machines so this is my next one! I even sprung for the pre-cut laser parts. Very little rigging on this and nice detail so it should be a looker when done. It'll be company from my Lohner and DMpopa's Phonix!
Starting this one soon so stay tuned...Dan

Why are paper models 1/33?
-
I think it's a metric thing and since these were started in places that use this system, it made the most sense. They are so close to 32nd that I routinely use 32nd figures, canopies and decals. Works out great!

Hooray for me!

Ha, ha! I'm only doing this one since it's got laser parts and it should go pretty fast as I build it along with that WWII infiltrator!
Thanks, Gene...Dan

A very attractive subjetc.
I even sprung for the pre-cut laser parts.
Isn't that cheating.....? ;) ;D
-
I am looking forward to watching the build.

Why yes...yest it is... ::) ::) It's still a paper product and it's a guilty pleasure! The ol' Me-410 is kicking my posterior so this will be a nice break.

I am looking forward to watching the build.
You inspired ME, DP!! More soon...Dan
-
I am looking forward to your build, cheating or not ::)
RAGIII

Thanks, Rick!
Here is a VERY modest start...but it's a start all the same. A bit of confusion on the instructions and the forward formers are more complicated than necessary but I think we are on track.
Stay tuned...Dan
-
This is going to be really good. I love this plane.
Alan.
-
Thanks, Alan. I like it too and I'm not sure I've ever seen a model of it at least a main-stream one! We'll see how this guy turns out.
Thanks for your support...Dan
Now that I looked...there sure are some models of this plane. Planet Model and some others. Plus a real one to look at too! I should check before opening my big yap. ::)
-
Looks like an excellent start to Me!
RAGIII
-
Thank you, Rick! Slow going, but starting to get all the little things into the side walls. Lots more to go!
Dan
-
Good progress. Looking Great!
RAGIII

Nice work!
-
Thanks, Folks. And DM...nice to have a fellow cutter of the paper on staff!
Cheers,
Dan
-
Lovely work Dan! She's already shaping up to be another winner!
-
Thanks, Zac! This one is an interesting machine... :D

A bit more on the interior and I put the side skins on too. Boy am I glad I just got a Windsock from Evilbay. I made some interior changes like some instrument gauges and what I think is the throttle on the right side of the cockpit. It's represented entirely differently in the kit. Plus...the cover of the model is rather fanciful as it shows the Knoller in the teeth of a dogfight with what looks like a Gloster Gladiator (At least it has two wings) but none of these apparently saw combat and were mostly simple trainers. Plus...it says that the restored example currently in a museum has the wrong colors and shows metal cowlings that should have a continued pattern of hexes. Oh, well. It's still looking cool to me!
More soon...Dan
-
That is looking very nice indeed, hard to believe it's a paper/card model....

I didn't like to tell you that but sadly it's another case of a museum ruining an original artifact with a poorly researched "restoration". But like you say, the model will look very cool.
-
I knew this was going to be good and so far I'm right!
Alan.
-
That is a Stunning Interior Dan! Lovely work!
RAGIII
-
Thank you, Rick, Alan and Nigel! I did some touch up painting on the interior, made my control column and installed it. Looks nice and busy yet everything has a purpose. Scratching my head about the pilot's seat but that may be done by the evening. ;D
Cheers,
Dan
-
Just more awesomeness!
RAGIII
-
That is a sweet cockpit!
-
Thanks you two. Tiny update with the pilot and observer's seats. The cool thing about this model is that the cockpit is huge and you can see everything even when it's done. One could go nuts with this machine...Dan
-
Very Nice!
-
Thanks, DM! Yours looks awesome too. I need to start my engine soon...
Here is a bit more with some top skins and the forward metal coverings installed too. Coming along nicely.
Dan
-
That is indeed looking very nice!
-
Thanks so much, Nigel!
Here it is with some more fuselage panels on, inspections types etc. and the tails have been started!
Dan
-
And...tails done and rigged, strutted etc. A couple more details then we'll start the engine!
Dan
-
Coming along very nicely, it's going to be a very colourful subject.
-
Very good work!
-
Impressive work. The colors on the hex are lovely!
RAGIII
-
Thanks folks! I worked on the engine which seems pretty busy and neat. Only the top half is made and I painted the engine bay black. I only added springs and I still need to add some rocker arms but next step will be the wings!
Dan
-
Wow Dan! That engine is more detailed than most injection molded kits. Nice work!
-
Very nice! These engines can be a very tough build. You nailed it.
-
Nice work on the engine, amazing considering it's paper and card.
-
Thanks Tim, DM and Nigel! This one has been a nice and relaxing build thus far.
I got the wings started and attached one side. I'll make the top wings soon.
Dan
-
Nice work, this is going to look really striking. It does seem to be going together rather well......(hopes he hasn't spoken too soon).
-
Thanks so much, Nigel. Yes...still going along with surprisingly little drama! I just rapped my knuckles on my head.
Here you see the typical wing structure. Before I skinned them, I added two brass tubes for strength and straightness (as per the directions). The skins went on great. Now I guess I need to make some struts and start getting the top wing situated.
More soon...Dan
-
Made a jig and got some struttery on. It's kind of a mess in there and I find a jig based on a scaled-up 3-view is essential. Kind of like a Brandenburg star strutter. No Mk.1 eyeball for this one. Too few right angles!! :o
I'll add the cabanes tomorrow and then cut it out of the jig and then add the last 4 struts. Sweet...Dan
-
Very much looking the business! Very nice work.
-
Thanks, Nigel. I hope to get the wings all done tomorrow. Then, except for the spoked wheels, it's all downhill from there!
Dan
-
Coming along nicely. Always interesting to see variations on "jigging".
Cheers Joachim
-
Beautiful!
-
OMG. So cool.
-
Thanks, you guys...much appreciated. :D
I got all the wing struts on and now I only need some touch-up paint then onto the landing gear!
Dan
-
That's gone together well, nearly there....... Very cool looking model so far.
-
Looking superb, hard to believe it is paper.
Alan.
-
Really enjoying this build, Dan. You're doing an amazing job of work here. I've always been a soft touch for A-H subjects but this is one of the nicest I've seen.
Dutch
-
Man, that is gorgeous!
RAGIII
-
Very good!
-
Thanks you fine folks...I got more details on the ol' girl including all the rigging, landing gear break, rad etc. Only big things left are the wheels. Soon...very soon!
Dan
-
There are so many interesting and colorful aircraft from WW1. This one ranks up there as does your Model!
RAGIII
-
Lovely work, it's looking great. Nearly there......
-
Thanks Rick and Nigel!
I think all that's left are the spoke wheels. You can see I got the rear gunner's gun ring done. I made it out of thin brass. I also made the Schwarzlose gun but left off the cooling jacket. That makes it look pretty cool and, I think, typical of that armament. The barrel is just a small bit of thin piano wire. I also got on the windscreen and a fuel line from the gravity tank (Can't see those in these shots)...
Ready for those wheels! Next shots will be of the jigging and spoke process and then onto the completed posts!
Thanks for looking,
Dan
-
Sorry I haven’t commented earlier Dan. Another incredible build. You really have a knack for realistic builds with these paper kits. Nice work with the Schwarzlose and gun ring.
All the best,
Tim
-
No worries, Tim. I need to check out your stuff too. I miss it.
Here are some progress shots of my attempts at spoke wheels. Worked ok though not perfect. Good enough for the girls we date...as I'm fond of saying. There are 72 spokes from pulled sprue/wheel with 36 on each side. The hubs are 3/32nd aluminum tubing and you can see the jig I made to get things rolling. Once only 16 are in, it's strong enough to pull out of the jig and do the rest jig-free which makes it easier to do the pin-point gluing needed. They are strong as the dickens so will easily hold up the machine. The rim is from 1/16th balsa and the outer tire shape is from paper/cardboard. The tires are a bit thicker than designed in the kit, but I think they were a bit anemic anyway. I like them.
One more to go!
Dan
-
Nice work on those wheels, they look really good.
-
Looks great. Gotta try this.
