I was saddened to learn of Dave's passing.
I hadn't been able to get to this site for several months as mymuchbetterhalf and I were/are finishing up building our new retirement house and life in general getting the way.
I thought I read that Daves two favorite aircraft were the SE5a and Pfalz DIII. I already have an SE so a Pfalz it is as I don't seem to have one on the shelf.
I thought I was going to be able do something like these markings.
(https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/jj307/Allanscott31/KB1109-2.jpeg) (https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/jj307/Allanscott31/KB1109-2.jpeg)
These are the markings we all grew up with for Hecht's aircraft.

Apparently modern technology is telling us otherwise.

And I disagree with the above as I feel the field between the fuselage stripes and behind the cross is white and not silver.
The requisite GB photo.

I wanted to participate in this GB to honor Dave. Sadly, life is getting in the way again as other hobbies are taking up my time so posting for this build may be somewhat sporadic. Rainy days happen so no playing outside and I'll gladly come in and work at the desk on Dave's Pfalz.
Any thoughts as to the accuracy of the new research on Hecht's aircraft are welcome.

I love your choice! Be advised that those Glencoe Decals will Most Likely Self Destruct No Matter what you do to try and prevent the Destruction! As for the colors, I agree with the Profile as the rudder is in the IWM and is green. I could go either way as to the fuselage band/background to the cross/

Welcome back Allan and an excellent choice of subject. I look forward to following along, even if it's completed after the GB is over.
-
So finally getting a chance to sit down and go over the Eduard kit, I was impressed with the detail and finesse of the moldings.
I was looking at the sprues and was wondering if I should replace the kit machine guns with something photo-etched and my brain said "Wait,....what?...machine guns?...."
My hopes of building the Eduard kit were dashed. Vizefeldwebel Hecht's aircraft is a DIII, not a DIIIa......
I then got the olde Glencoe kit down and started comparing and was pleasantly surprised how close the old kit was to the new one. Look how close the rib detail is.

The strut holes line up almost exactly.

Almost exact.

This is the most glaring difference between the two.

The thing Aurora/Glencoe got real wrong is the space between the top of the fuselage and the top wing. The wing should be much closer.
(https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/jj307/Allanscott31/Screen_Shot_2024-07-05_at_3.18.56_PM.png) (https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/jj307/Allanscott31/Screen_Shot_2024-07-05_at_3.18.56_PM.png) (https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/jj307/Allanscott31/Screen_Shot_2024-07-05_at_3.14.41_PM.png) (https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/jj307/Allanscott31/Screen_Shot_2024-07-05_at_3.14.41_PM.png)
The Glencoe has a desidedly Sopwith Camelesk look to it. I'm sure I can shorten the struts and fix this.
(https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/jj307/Allanscott31/thumbnail_(11)_6723Ywyx8XV4VcxRbdn8Y3.jpeg) (https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/jj307/Allanscott31/thumbnail_(11)_6723Ywyx8XV4VcxRbdn8Y3.jpeg)
I'm actually looking forward to building and fixing this old Aurora/Glencoe kit. Why build an easy-peasy new kit when I can suffer through trying to bring an old kit up to snuff....
I will start a new Glencoe post rather than continuing this Eduard unless you guys think otherwise.
-
Best of luck with this oldie (but not quite goldie).....
-
Pretty impressive comparison, given the lackadaisical attention to detail in some of those older kits (but who knew in those days? Datafiles were waay off in the 1980s...). Given your abilities I'm sure you'll produce another masterpiece, Allan.
Dutch
-
Fascinating project. You are taking me back to two different periods of my modelling life: the sixties, with the Aurora Pfalz, which I loved at the time (with the crewman hanging on the side!), then later, the nineties, when Eduard moved from their first short run kits to this better standard ( and enticed me back into model making!)
Lovely stuff.
Sandy
-
The Old kit holds up fairly well to Eduards effort! I am having a senior moment and can't recall which tailplane would be correct for your markings choice. I am thinking the smaller chord is right but not sure ::)
RAGIII
-
Thanks All....
Rick, I've discovered the markings are for a DIII not a DIIIa so the Glencoe is correct.
-
Well done, a fitting tribute.
Ed
-
I think I'm more excited for the Glencoe than the Eduard - then again, I'm not the one doing the work ;D
-
Since I'm doing the Glencoe kit, I needed to scratch together a cockpit. Not 100% accurate but close enough when all buttoned up.
Kits seat greatly cut down, sheet and strip styrene.

Some old Eduard photoetch belts and some Airscale WW1 instrument dial decals. I found a left over Quinta 3D printed sear cushion so that is buried under the belts.

There was nothing under the wing so I added the radiator and fuel tank made from aluminum foil tape for interest.

Nice work on adding the cockpit details! Really effective for what will/can be seen. Excellent Modeling on a basic kit!
RAGIII
-
Hi Allan
"The thing Aurora/Glencoe got real wrong" is the fuselage underside between the lower wings.
Don't forget to shorten the rear undercarriage struts to get the right sit!
In a collection of Aurora kits the Pfalz always looked better than most others, and if you refuse to turn it upside down
nobody will see the bad underside.
Your start looks promising
Joachim
-
Madness IMO to attempt this kit but a great start.
-
I quite like that cockpit. Great work!
-
Cockpit done, I added some Spandaus under the engine cover.

Glad the engine still fit. I added the intake manifold to the left side. Glencoe would have you mount the exhaust with the outlet forward, I will do it more Fokker looking.

I had sanded off the over-thick cockpit combing, I will replace it with thin styrene rod. I will recreate the inspection hatches with more adhesive aluminum foil.
I'm debating sanding and thinning the rudder or leave it Glencoe.
More Madness....
-
Looks great, Allan, every time I see a Pfalz I'm struck by the sheer elegance of those lines... they were the Aston-Martins of the Great War.
Dutch

I agree: she looks very Pfalzy! Lovely work so far!

That is looking very good for a very basic kit. Great work so far.....

Terrific work on the Old Gal! Pfalzy Indeed 8)

I think I'm done with the last of the surgery.
I had shaved off the over-sized combing around the cockpit. I replaced it with some thin styrene rod.

Looking at some online WnW builds, there lots of inspection panels and metal re-enforcement bits I will add with the furnace tape. Then we are finally ready for primer and paint.

Nice work on the coaming, a simple but very effective fix. It's looking surprisingly good for such an old kit, but a lot of that is down to you....

Your Mods continue to make this Old Kit look Great!
RAGIII

Wow excellent work! Really impressive :)

Glacial progress but progress...
It's both a curse and a blessing to have the WnW Pfalzs online.
Resorting to my handy furnace tape, I duplicated the many inspection panels, hinges and other bits visible on the DIII.

For the doped silver, I mixed 2 parts Aluminum to 1 part Light Gull Grey. Then sealed up the silver with Future as it seemed a little delicate.

Decals next then a coat of Future to seal things up then weathering with oils.

Excellent looking silbergrau, I think that mix looks very nice indeed. The paint is coming together nicely for what will be a good looking scheme. It will be hard to believe there's a Glencoe model under there.....
-
I'm loving this build, I've always wanted to do an Aurora Albatros as you've done with your OOB builds, using the skillset I've acquired over the intervening half-century since the last time I slapped one together (filler putty? Whazzat?).
Brilliant work.
Dutch
PS - are you going to be at the Vintage Weekend at Lime Rock? My son Curt and I will probably be there.

I'm loving it too, fantastic extra work going into making this a real gem!

Looking very much like a beautiful Jasta 10 Pfalz now! Love your work on the Old Gal!

About to do the oil/grunge wash and thought to add the black stripe I forgot on the wing. Loaded up some paint, masking, psssss, psssss, done.
I tried to rescue the kit prop with a new vac-formed spinner from the Eduard kit.
(https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/jj307/Allanscott31/thumbnail_(93)_ppTKZTYVpvgS6c61vW8TAy.jpeg) (https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/jj307/Allanscott31/thumbnail_(93)_ppTKZTYVpvgS6c61vW8TAy.jpeg)
But the prop itself is still rather anemic so I pinched a prop from the parts box. I needed to vac another spinner. During the last bit of trimming the vac-form bit went binging off down between my legs then bounced down to the floor off my chair. How it got behind my chair is a mystery. Of the entire floor to land on, it settled right behind one of the wheels and I crushed the nose under the wheel. The new nose and now my master are crushed. Hearing my .....frustration..... from all the way at the other end of the house my muchbetterhalf elected to stay right where she was.
Fine, WHATEVER!! I'll fix it later when I calm down. Let's see how the wing dried up.....

I feel your pain. But at times like these I always remember my best friend Tom, who ran a top-shelf auto restoration/collision shop. Whenever I'd get ranting about some especially difficult project he'd always remind me "If this stuff was easy, Dutch, everybody'd be doing it..."
For What It's Worth,
D.
-
Yep, been there often.
In fact I bought a great little USB torch (flashlight) off ebay for exactly this problem. One of those that can illuminate the whole garden, just a few quid. Now as soon as I drop something, or can't see what was on the bench a moment ago, I keep the chair still and shine all round before I move an inch.
I'll probably crush something now for being smug, but this has saved countless small pieces from the wheels or feet of this clumsy idiot!
Sandy
PS Great progress, by the way!

Ahhh, the "joys" of model making! It's all part of the "process" as people like to say these days. But it can drive you mad, my wife is used to hearing a lot of swearing while I am undertaking my "restful" hobby....
Glad you overcame those minor humps because this is coming together nicely. Keep going!

Thanks all, I'm in a much better place now. Dutch, it was rude of me to post and not answer your question. I will not be RACING at Lime Rock but I will be there. Skip has taken what in years past was a wonderful vintage event and turned it into a money grab. Expensive entry, low track time in strangely mixed groups and a lousy chicken dinner.
The last big hurdle and I think my cunning plan worked. The Aurora/Glencoe wing is too high over the fuselage so I shortened the struts and now is much closer to the technical drawings out there.

I added control horns from wire on the rear.

I'm glad I went through the effort with the wings but I probably wouldn't do it again. Just get an Eduards. That said, I do enjoy the cutting and hacking.

I didn't go TOO crazy with the oil/grunge wash as the photo of this aircraft seems to look pretty clean.

Paint the propeller, last coat of a more satin finish, landing gear and rigging.

Looks great, Allan, wonderful color scheme and it's always good to see the old kits being built. I never saw the Aurora Pfalz back in the day, in fact I don't think I ever knew of its existence at the time.
Dutch
PS - I'm 110% with you on the current state of Lime Rock. I can usually get a pass for free; if not I skip it...

Good work and a very good looking aircraft!

Always satisfying when it reaches the Bi-Plane stage! Your pfalz is wearing that lovely scheme well. Great work!

Lovely work, this is looking really good. I have a Roden 1/32 D.III in the stash and you are tempting me to do this scheme.....
-
Great. I will always admire those who tackle those oldie-goldie kits. And bring them to shining.

Thanks all.
All finished and posted over in the Completed section.

Beautifully done Allan! One has to look twice to see it’s not a later release model. Love the scheme.

Thanks all. Glad you enjoyed this old kit from our past.
I do derive some perverse pleasure from upgrading these old kits to more modern standards but of course some kits are just not worth the effort.
To that end, I'm think of starting a new category of building. The L.O.A.P. build. These would be those kits we all built as kids but now just are not up to the accuracy standards of the modern day contemporary version.

The LOAP builds would include things like the SMER SPAD VII, the Tiger Moth, all the Aurora WW1, even the Revell 1/28 kits could be included. Build them as we did years ago, in about a day. No extra nothing just OOB but we might have to add new decals as the old ones would be shot. We would force ourselves to put our AMS, (Advance Modelers Syndrome), aside and just have fun. Rigging would be optional on LOAP builds.
I'm thinking my first LOAP build would be the olde Aurora Albatros DV.

Not bad in its day but certainly does not compare to anything resent and not worth the effort to correct. Well painted, it wouldn't look too out of place in the back on a shelf.
This could even be done as a GB.
BTW, the new category, LOAP stands for "Lipstick On A Pig".....

Great job on the Pfalz, you certainly made a silk purse out of a pig's ear. When you get round to a couple of those Smer kits you'll need COAP, concrete on a pig. I like the statement of on the Albatros D.V box 'First successful German biplane fighter'. I assume all the German fighters before that were really shit!
