It wouldn't be Me if I didn't do two to Honor David! So I picked this CSM kit up at a very reasonable price and will build it to Honor David! Not sure of the Scheme yet.

Nice, Rick, my son's got that kit and it's an absolute beauty. I'm sure Dave would approve.
Dutch

Great choice.

Thanks Guys. I will get the sprue shots soon!

Ooooh this'll be cool!
-
Will be excited to follow along with this one! I also have the CSM Nieuport as my 2nd build if I can fit 2 kits into the deadline :)
-
Thanks Guys! I have made a modest start that I will show this weekend!
RAGIII
-
While the oils dry on the Triplane, I have done some Very Basic preliminary work on the 23. Upper wing assembled. The lower wing cleaned up and rigging holes drilled. I also have done some base painting for the wood interior parts.

Nice start!
Steve
-
Great start!
What surprised me about the Nieuport is just how small it actually is compared to some of the other WW1 fighters :)
-
Great start, Rick! I've never built one of the "New Wave" CSM kits, but I have two in the stash, the Bristol (thanks to Kensar) and the late version of the 17. Maybe after Projekt Eindecker starts winding down...

Thanks Ben. Yes, the Nieuport is a smallish aircraft for the time!

Thanks Dutch. You won't be disappointed with the CSM kits. This is My 4th Nieuport and I still have a 90% finished Bristol Scout ::)

I do love a Noop and I'm really enjoying the way this is coming together. Great work so far!

If you want an idea of just how small they were, check out Sir Peter Jackson's full-scale Ni.11 (powered by a rotary). It's the cutest little thing and is a delight to see in person.

(Why, yes, this aircraft IS why I'm excited for the Italian Aces boxing of the KP kit!)
-
Thank you very much for the pictures Zac - that plane is so tiny! I have to clear the bench at some point and get started :)
-
Thanks for those terrific photos, Zac. I think the 17/23 is just a tad larger, but just a very small TAD!
RAGIII
-
Rick, how can you be building two models at the same time? I have problems enough building one!
Excellent start.
Zac: thanks for the photos - those Nieuports really were tiny. I wonder how anyone could shoot at such a small target and hit it!

I think we have had this conversation before ::) I can see how you would get yours mixed up as one sheet of styrene looks pretty much like any other ;D
RAGIII

I have done some basic work and finished the first step or two in the build. Also some work for later assembly.

I am not sure if it is a record speed build, I just haven't hit the snags yet :D Thanks for the comments!
RAGIII

Thanks Przemo! Yesterday I made it onto the next page of the instructions. The cockpit frame is not glued on to the wing. I managed to break one of the cabanes. I sort of remember this happening on one of My other Niuport builds. If you are building this kit handle the frames gingerly!

PS: Before it's too late I have a question. Probably No Real answer but all thoughts are appreciated. The attached photo is of Albert Balls' Nieuport 16. I know of No other photos of a British Nieuport showing the interior. One wonders if the Brits modified the 17 and 23 with something similar? Thoughts???

Great work, you really are cracking on with this, it's looking really good. Regarding the instrument board, I have no idea but it seems that it would be more up to individuals/units to make mods/additions to the somewhat basic instrument setup that Nieuports had.
-
Thanks Nigel. I still have another day or two to decide on the instruments!
RAGIII
-
This is looking pretty terrific Rick.
I like those tiny Nieuports too. ;D
Willem

Coming along very nicely Rick! You are a model making machine!

Thanks Brad! Today's agenda is catching up on installing control cables. Or so I Hope 8)
RAGIII
-
The control cables from the rudder to the first rear frame, and the bracing cables on the frame forward section have been added. I noticed a bow in one of the bracing cables which has since been fixed. The seat and frame are just placed in position to make sure all is in alignment!

Thanks Guys! Before I close this one up I have another question which most likely has No answer ::) We know the Foster Mount enabled the Pilots to "Change Lewis Gun Drums" in flight. Any WAGs about where the extra Drum/Drums were stowed?
RAGIII

Brilliant work, Rick. a bit late to the party here but you're project looks very impressive indeed.

Thanks for the Very Kind comment! I went with a Wild As& guess for the spare drums. If I ever do another British Nieuport 17 or 23 I will plan in advance and do a shelf blended into the fuselage frame. Also a bit further forward as when the upper fuselage was glued on it is impossible to see ::)

Today I sanded and primed the Nieuport. I also assembled the engine and gave it it's initial painting. The down side is I re-broke the right forward cabane strut, and also broke off the left one! Hopefully not a hard fix as the breaks are clean!

Mind those cabane struts!

Thank You Very Much Guys! Greatly appreciate the comments. My pre-shading worked fairly well except for a problem on the fuselage with "Fuzzy" primer. Sanded and re-painted. Initial silver dope was MRP weiss Aluminum, and after a thin coat of Tamiya Aluminum. The Decals are incredible. They work Perfectly without any issues! I even used the rudder decal which is something I don't normally do.

Thanks. The MRP Weiss Aluminum turned out to be more translucent than "Most" metalics. That allowed pre- shading to work OK.

Today I went ahead and mounted the upper wing. Perhaps a bit earlier than I normally would but I needed to know if My plan for fixing the broken cabanes in place worked. It seems to have worked just fine....so far! I also will use the CSM RFC pilot in one of the photos:

Really like how it's turning out Rick! Shapes and color are just amazing!
Soo tempted to start my own kit of this one! But I got another thing coming in the mail soon ;D

Great start on the weathering Rick, I think oils are really the best way of reproducing that "grubby" finish that you can see on many photos, and this is looking good so far.

Lovely job all round, you made what can be a potentially boring scheme look very interesting. The figure complements the build very well and I really like the base as well. Great job!
-
Great job Rick, truly inspiring.
-
Great to see another RFC Nieuport doming to the show and what a fabulous job you've made of it
Paul
-
Congratulations! This looks fantastic. The RFC Nieuports always interest me, so this is a real treat to see. I especially like the weathered look, as the RFC machines often look quite grimy compared to their French or Italian cousins. And the excellent base is icing on the cake! :D
-
Thanks Guys, I appreciate all of the comments! I do like the Dirty Look on this one. I was lucky that someone posted a bunch of photos of Bishops Nieuport 17 on FB which acted as an inspiration 8)

Rick,
I have not been able to follow your build very closely, so I have just read through your thread as part of an attempt to catch up.
That is simply outstanding, especially with the pilot figure. The silver/aluminium finish and oil staining make that model look completely real - I could easily believe that it was so if it were in balck and white. Simply modelling at its very best.
Stephen.
