I'm certainly going to enjoy following along with this one... looking forward to seeing that color scheme on the model.
Dutch
-
Me too.
-
Looking forward to this.
Sandy
-
Ooh, looking forward to this one also. Great choice of scheme.
However, I will be interested to see how you get on with the Wotan prop. I tried at least three different ways to get the laminations and failed miserably every time! That's why I will stick to schemes with the bolted together prop..... :) Using a ProperPlane prop is cheating btw ;) ;D
-
Always surprised at the number of schemes on this one given the short service life (Great choice by the way)
Looking forward to this one . . .
Paul
-
Your welcome to my announcement is both flattering and intimidating. Let us see what I will be able to do with this precious kit.
Ooh, looking forward to this one also. Great choice of scheme.

My plan is to order the Kotebi veneers to be cut and I will carve my prop(s). Hope you will not consider it as cheating ;)
-
The kit looks amazing. Such a beautiful little aircraft too.
-
Cant wait to see you do your magic on this one :)
-
My plan is to order the Kotebi veneers to be cut and I will carve my prop(s). Hope you will not consider it as cheating ;)
Yes, that's still cheating in my book ;) ;D However, it does take a special skill to carve props, there's no denying that :) I am sure it will look fantastic.
-
This will be an absolute joy to watch as it comes together. The kit looks amazing!
RAGIII
-
A superb choice, and what will no doubt be another stunner!
Cheers,
BC
-
The first step - the interior truss removed from the 3D print tree. The resin is quite brittle but the tree tips touching the kit element are very thin and even if broken, not cut, do not leave the recesses but rather a pin which is easy to remove with a sharp blade. Some touch spots are hard to access with a sanding paper.

I've been worried about getting these parts out of the frame - so thanks Prze for leading the way.
I'll follow with great interest.
Sandy
-
It will be really interesting to see this kit come to life in your hands. I don't think I've seen one negative comment about it, but so far it's been very much first impressions, so this might give it a bit more substance. Not that I'm doubting the positive comments!
Fredrik
-
A good start Przeomo!
RAGIII

First test fit of the truss with the fuselage halves and the lower wing. The result - very satisfactory. No trace of the dreaded anhedral, no need to sand the mating surfaces. Only some delicate flash removed on the fuselage and wing edges. Very, very promising. Not that I expected anything else...

-
Wow, that is good news all round. When I built the test model, the fit wasn't this good. Richard made some changes to the final kit as a result of the test build and it's clear they really paid off.
Looking forward to seeing more of your build.
-
It is great to see that a Limited run Resin kit can be made to such a great degree of accuracy and precision. !
RAGIII
-
Beginning of the cockpit assembly. The 3D print elements do have some traces of printing layers, which I am trying to sand down. Tedious but necessary, especially for the elements which will get a metallic finish.

I am certain you will get the best out of the parts provided.... even though they take a bit of work!
RAGIII
-
The idea of Prze building an Aviattic Pfalz brought a big smile to my face. Thank you so much for sharing this build with us Prze, and I hope one day I'm able to get one of these beautiful kits (I fell in love with Mikael Carlson's replica from the first YouTube video of it flying). I'm sure there are Aviattic owners on the forum who are eagerly watching your build and taking notes for theirs!
-
Thank you for the encouraging words, Rick and Zac.
Here is more fitting and preparations of small resin and PE bits for the cockpit.

Those parts look amazing Przemo! With every post I get more excited about your build!
RAGIII
-
Wow the kit and your work look stunning!
Working with resin always scare me. Broken so many parts by not being careful enough. Can't wait to see some more of your magic on this kit :)
-
Excellent preparation work, looking forward to seeing your progress on this.
-
Thanks.
More preps, removing of 3D print traces underway, still the primer reveals that some retouches have to be done.

Luckily, the more delicate and detailed bits made from darker resin are free of these faults.
-
That is devotion to duty! IMO you really can't really see the few faint traces of the 3D print once the model is painted, built and weathered so I admire your dedication. You probably have much better eyes than me...... Also, you can't see the ammunition box once it's in the cockpit anyway so I wouldn't worry too much about that.... ;)
This is going to be a lovely build, looking forward to more of it.
-
I am sure that your preparation of the parts will pay off in the end. Your usual precise work!
RAGIII
-
Wow, just....wow. Better than WnW?
-
Wow, just....wow. Better than WnW?
Comparable in many aspects. But then, different in being resin, 3D print, not injection plastic.
Slow progress on the cockpit interior...

Really great progress on this one Przemo! Your detail painting and small improvements such as the springs are amazing!
RAGIII
-
Wow thats some delicate details! Looks amazing ;D
-
Thanks.
Some more bits added to the interior truss. There is more to come including some tubing and cables seen in the photos of Mikael Carlson's replica which are not included in the kit.

And I have just got the lovely precut veneers to carve the Wotan propeller from the ever reliable Kotebi who is currently adding the cleverly engineered 4-bladed propellers to the offer. Needless to say - highly recommended. The pack is now glued together and impregnated using liquid CA glue. Carving soon!

Beautiful job, Przemo! How are you planning on finishing it?
Dutch
-
Yep, I am envious! Beautiful!!
RAGIII
-
Clear orange applied to give the final hue. The boss plate cut from the kit part, with the openings drilled out, painted steel. A delicate wash and manufacturer logo stickers will complete the job.

Beautiful work on the prop!

Propeller finished.

Superb job, and nice decals....... ;)
-
Thank you, Nigel... you know the decal story far too well :)
And after the propeller detour, back to the pit. First cables, tubes and linkages added. There are still three fuel lines missing.

Dutch

That is looking sooooo good!! Lovely work.

Wooah! What is this magic! Shrinking down a real propeller?!? ;D
Just stunning work on the details! ;)

Magnificent work Prze, that prop is very impressive and the super detailing in a class of its own. A pleasure to follow along as you again demonstrate the art of the master craftsman!

Thank you, Rick and Lance.

Excellent! That's gone together really nicely. That's the only potentially challenging element of the build, the rest should fall together pretty quickly.
-
Outstanding work Przemo! It is Nice to see a costly Resin kit that doesn't need a ton of corrections! The result is you can spend your time just using your skill to make it look better!
RAGIII
-
Very nice work! Its quickly taking shape :)
Looks like the seamwork is minimal, so great news!
-
Very nice progress on your project, Prze. Other than your propeller (which I saw on FB) I've just seen the rest of your build and it's very impressive indeed! Nice to see these kits put together.
Cheers,
Gary
-
Very nice progress indeed!
-
Beautiful work, Przemo... I have a thing for copper, and that tank came out beautifully. Really enjoying following this build, what a gorgeous kit!
Dutch
-
Loverly...a shame that copper tank got buried....
-
Many thanks, everyone.
Some more progress - seams filled and under treatment together with some polishing of 3D print traces, a chain for the magneto switch added, also the lovely resin Spandaus dryfit. I have to say that I am enjoying every bit of this kit. If you deliberate if to get it, I would recommend it without any hesitation.

Blimey Nigel how many are you going to build? (He says with his tongue firmly in his cheek after a dozen triplanes) ;)
Paul
ps - Lovin' this thread so far Prze ;D

Excellent progress and the MG's look good. I can safely say they will look awesome once painted!
RAGIII
-
So typical of your great work, aprimer for when I get to mine !
Ed
-
Thanks for the kind comments, folks.
Long break due to holidays is over, and I am back to my bench. Some corrections of gaps between the rudder and the fin done. Also the work on polishing the wing surfaces between the fine rib tapes is going on. Doing this I also decided to remove imho overdone raised detail along the leading and trailing edges of the wings.
The openings in the fuselage are covered in preparation for airbrushing.

I hope you enjoyed your holidays but I am glad they are over because we want to see this build progressing! Nice prep work, looking forward to seeing the paint going on....
-
Holidays were great, Nigel, thank you.
More cleaning of 3D print traces - one wheel before it and another after it... And I assembled the fantastic 11-cylinder SH engine.

Man, I like that engine. It'll be a shame to burry it in the cowling.
Alan.
-
Beautiful, PrzemoL, glad to see that you're able to make improvements even on this masterpiece of a kit!
Dutch
-
The difference between a Great Modeler like you, and a Modeler like Me. I would have told everyone what a nice job Aviattic did with the deteriorating fabric wheel cover whereas you fixed them ::) Excellent progress. The Engine looks to be a Beauty!
RAGIII
-
Thanks a lot.
Some more corrections - the excessive gaps at the ailerons sides are already cleared, the one on the perimeter of the wheel cover - under construction. I am using a thin plastic profile from Evergreen.

-
Excellent prep work. I tend to rush things too much....... :-[
-
After numerous tedious sessions of polishing and primer airbrushing I am finally happy with the smoothness of the main parts - especially important for the wings which are to be covered with semitransparent losenge decals to avoid silvering.
They are now painted gloss white, as is the rudder. The remainder will be airbrushed dark green, except for the wheel covers and engine cowling, which will get their yellow.

Topnotch work as usual Prez.
I am always enjoying your builds and buildlogs ;D
Willem

More Amazing work Przemo! The yellow on the cowling along with that Gorgeous Prop look Stunning! The Engine is also superb!

Beautiful paintwork and scheme!

Beautiful work, PrzemoL, but no surprise there... I'm certain this is going to be one of your best!
Dutch

Very nice work. Those decals look really cool. For some reason, I find the stencilling really appealing and for some reason it brings the model to life. Aviattic put a lot of effort into getting all those little details correct and I really think it pays off.

Thank you.

I fully agree. They add a lot of life, despite being so tiny. I still have to work a bit with MicroSol on them to remove spots of silvering.

Propulsion unit mounted!
Funny enough, I have not glued the engine, only the prop is attached to it and the whole set can rotate, as if it was ordinary rotary. I know it is not correct for the bi-rotary SSh engine. But it will allow me to present the model with various prop orientations. And I can still pour CA glue to make it fixed, if I am bored with it ;)

I'm surprised Richard didn't include a tiny 3D printed gearbox to enable the motor and prop to rotate in opposite directions :D
You're making great progress,

I love the colours on this and it’s looking great… a real brute of a plane!

@Przemol
@Davos522
Hello PrzemoL, Hello Dutch,
don't let your thoughts lead you astray!
Seen from the outside, the Siemens Halske ShIII is exactly the same as a normal rotary engine.
The propeller is bolted to the engine housing and therefore - logically - rotates at the same speed and in the same direction as the cylinders rotate.
The special feature of this engine compared to a normal rotary engine is that the crankshaft INSIDE the engine rotates at the same speed against the direction of rotation of the cylinders.
The SHIII rotates at a maximum of 900 rpm in one direction and the crankshaft at 900 rpm in the other direction - this results in an effective speed of 1800 rpm.
If the propeller on the model rotates in the same direction and at the same speed as the engine, this is absolutely correct!
And by the way PrzemoL - an excellently built model is currently being built on your workbench ;)

It is hard to digest that I lived so long with the wrong idea of birotary engine principle... :-[ But then, thank you Bertl for straightening it out! And my pleasure is now doubled as it turned out that my ad hoc mod of the engine assembly is correct :D
-
This is looking beautiful Przem, you are really doing this kit justice. Is the prop painted or carved? If painted, how the heck did you manage it?
-
Thank you, Nigel!

we have had the discussion about cheating with the propeller :)

Mine is carved from pre-cut veneers - which you considered as cheating, indeed ;-)

Stunning, just stunning! The color, the prop just amazing! ;D

Ah, I'd forgotten that. You did indeed cheat ;) ;D but you made a fantastic job of the propellor, it does look really good. And the four-bladed Wotan is virtually impossible to paint anyway.

The rigging stations in, some did not stand the pull off test - reinserted and awaiting the second test.

And now the assembly is started. Cabane struts on place, with the use of a cardboard jig. And the test of dryfit of the upper wing. BTW, the wings are so thin in profile and made from a soft resin that they hog down under self weight. I wonder if the addition of struts will be enough to help or will the rigging need to be really working as in the real thing :)

Beautiful work Przem, this is looking stunning.
I wonder if the addition of struts will be enough to help or will the rigging need to be really working as in the real thing :)
I have had no problems with mine, the struts hold everything in place nicely. It's been transported to several shows and no sign of any wing droop.

I didn't think I fancied the green colour scheme but this (and the one by Nigel) is certainly changing my mind.
Fantastic detail work.

PS great technique with the cardboard upper centre section!

Actually, in my case the struts were not enough, there was still a visible hogging.
But... just 4 rear landing wires did their magic! Drop down is now cancelled. So for tonight I can plan the pure rigging joy with the remaining cables! :)

Can you tell us what colors you used for the cockpit, the struts, the engine cowling and the fuselage, please?

All the colours are custom mixes of Vallejo acrylics.
Fuselage green is 4:3 Verde Refractorio and Gris Oliva.
Yellow is Amarillo Mate with a small drop of Naranja.
Wheel covers are RLM02
And all the struts are 1:1 RLM02 and Gris Claro.

That is right, my usual method for 32nd scale, this time the rigging is really working.
And after todays fun it is almost there, just the control surfaces with their cables are left for tomorrow.
