I will be building this one for the Memorial build. It will have stripes and bands, typical of My builds, but not the one on the Box.

I will post a photo of the parts in the box later.

Great choice, from what I have been told it's a lovely kit.

It's a whopper! ;)
Good to see one of these built since I have a soft spot for Tripes

Nice choice! I have the 1/32 version so I’ll be very interested to follow along and compare :)
-
Nice, Rick, another great build to look forward to from der Fokker-Meister!
And you actually own a 1:32 kit, William? I thought you were only interested in models that requires scanning helium microscopy to work on... ;D

Absolutely, the date and time seems correct, but what's up with the 74%? Shouldn't it be 100% unfinished? 😁
Seriously, good choice and I'm looking forward to seeing it built.

Will be following with great interest!
The kit have been on and off my wishlist a few times. It does really look nice and im sure you will do a great job ;D

A great choice! I haven't seen many of these built up so I am interested to see how this particular kit comes together.
Model on!

Thanks Brad. Here is the basic scheme I will be doing:

That looks like an interesting scheme Rick. I am sure that the streaking will be to your usual very high standard.
Stephen.

Looking forward to following you on this one. I have been eyeing this kit for A while now

Thanks Guys! I have begun to do some Very Basic work on the DR1. Seeing as Ray of Windsock and others have had Nothing but Praise for this kit I am probably alone in finding a small issue right off of the Bat!
The upper wing, upper half had a Bow. Resting it on a flat surface the ends were on the glass and the center raised. Oddly that is the wing half that has the Box Structure to keep things strong and straight. The much thinner lower portion was pin straight. That being said it was too thin to straighten the upper portion when taped together. I decided to make a Razor saw cut in the box on each side. ( See Drawing) Once I glued the wing together gentle bending straightened things out. Again I don't think this is typical of the kit as No One has mentioned having an issue.
I also seem to have a small but manageable warp in the fuselage right side behind the cockpit.
All of the other wings were fine. The second photo shows a few of the parts I have worked on. I am also thinking of using the Aviattic wood grain decals that I have cut to shape. Still not sure on that one.

Good job! As you've made cuts and used glue, I suppose you're farther on in the build process than me with my SE.5s... I've only reached the stage with bits on cocktail sticks.
Cheers
Fredrik
-
Interesting. The 1/32 kits all seemed to have warped wings but it hasn't been reported with the 1/24 kits. Well done for spotting it and fixing it.
-
Good to see this one being built.
But I'm boggling with looking at 1/144 models and this one in 1/24!
At a train show recently I chatted to a chap with a Z scale layout and made the mistake of asking if it was 1/144: he was outraged. No, you mean those N scale things, they are huge (1/160), he said, this is Z scale - 1/220 - the scale of the Gods!

Yeah, Like I said, I don't think this is a common Issue. That being said I would suggest anyone building this kit check out the upper wing!

Yep, Some Incredible work will be Done in a Bunch of Scales!
RAGIII
So todays work was on the seat belts and seat:
Honestly speaking I found the fabric belts to be a pain. When removed from the backing they were Extremely sticky. To the pont I found I had to
use goo gone to remove the gum so I could feed the belts through the PE buckles. In the end I won the battle ::)

RAGIII
-
I too am not a fan of the fabric seatbelts. They don't seem a major improvement over PE to me. Well done for winning the battle.....
-
Excellent progress! Looks great ;D
I also thought the 1/24 was better in terms of top wing. It's really the only thing keeping me from getting the 1/32 and 1/24 Dr1. However looks like you fixed it very easily!
-

Like I said I seem to be the Only one that had a Warp in the 1/24th scale upper wing. I had to make the cuts in order to be able to bend it slightly into shape.
As for the 1/32nd , yes, they are all pretty much warped. The Fix on that one is Easy!! Just bend gently until the wing is straight. I have fixed four and they All remain straight!! Takes about 5 minutes for me now.
RAGIII
PS: I still have lots to do on the on the fabric behind the seat as well as some touch up on the seat itself!
-
A little progress on the fabric and seat/belts.

Like the choice of Scheme Amigo! It is odd that it has not been done more.
Apologies for not answering your messages about this kit , I have been pre-occupied with other things and have not been on here or even modeling for 2+ months.

Thanks Amigo! It is a great scheme and like you I don't know why more have not been modeled.
Here is todays progress. Interior painted with Valejo Ivory with wood grain using oils. Oil stains are a mix of Burnt Umber and Balck. It looks sort of Ugly right now but once all together it will be convincing!

Good progress here. The interior of thw 1/32 kits is very nice and goes together well, it will be interesting to see how this one develops....

Thanks Nigel. So far everything seems like it will assemble as well or better than the 1/32nd kit. The major difference is certain details are molded separately in this one. There are of course, added details also. We shall see 8)

Looking good, that's all gone together really well. A very nice interior.
Thanks Nigel! You are correct in that everything seems to line up as it should. The exception on mine being that slight warp in the fuselage I spoke of. That just took a little more care in aligning the halves and some filling and sanding. I am obviously doing an OOb build with the exception of adding rigging. If one adds additional detail it would be a sure contest winner. Finally it is also obvious I like My Dr1 interiors dirty and oily 8)

Fine progress, Rick. Fingers crossed for the continuation :)
-
Fine progress, Rick. Fingers crossed for the continuation :)
Thanks. So far all is very good! I have progressed to gluing the Mid wing to the fuselage and doing a bit of painting. One thing I must say is that I originally had No Intention of leaving the lower access panel open! The detail is so nice on the interior that I decided to use the open panel option. For the record if one plans to do this remember that the lower portion of the fuselage floor and the fuselage sides need to be treated as if they will be visible...they will be ! Fill any mold release /pin marks and paint the spars and lower floor in wood colors.

Well spotted on the ejector pin marks, it's worth fixing. Although how will we be able to see in through that panel once you have built it.....? ;)
I'm amazed you can manage to paint the streaking on the lower wing with the middle one in place.....

The inside of that panel will be visible only if one looks at the Model from the underside by lifting it up ::) Good observation about the streaking being difficult with the lower wing in place. The fuselage would be the most difficult by the way. The answer is it is just fitted in place and not glued 8)

Oils for the streaking. Not sure if I am going to keep it or strip it. I spent yesterday working on the very nice Spandaus! Photos later.

Thanks Guys! Sometimes the Modeling Gods Make your Decision For You! I sealed the streaks after the oils dried ! I began to mask the fuselage for the Personal and national markings. During a re-alignment the tape lifted a large chunk of streaking and CDL from the fuselage. So Nothing to do but strip and do it again 8)
RAGIII
-
I'm so sorry to read that Rick, I also liked the streaking as it was. Good luck with round two!
I'm not sure if anyone else has said so but bravo on the engine, it looks fantastic!
I'm fairly sure one of Sir Peter Jackson's seven(!) flying replica Dr.Is wears this scheme but I don't appear to have taken any photos of it. A fine choice for your build!
-
Very nice progress! I really like the streaking - looked very spot on. Annoying when things down work out, but im sure it will be even better 2nd time ;)

Thanks Brad. The first attempt was My usual 50/50 mix of Ivory black and Cadmium Yellow deep with a VERY small drop of red added. I cheated on the second attempt and used an Olive green oil with again, just a VERY small drop of red. As the damp brush is used to remove unwanted pigment it streaks and varies the color with the base Tamiya buff showing through the translucent olive. So actually just one color of oils is used ::)

I have made a lot of progress in the last two days. The oils dried so a clear coat was applied to seal them in. The green backgrounds for the crosses were masked and sprayed, then the lower surface blue was applied. Having No reason not to, I assembled the wings to the fuselage. This is a great fit and the strut fit is so tight one almost doesn't need glue! Upper wing cross decals have been applied. Next is Masking and painting the personal markings.

Sorry Rick but I had to spend time away and in that period you have stolen a huge march on me!
Real shame about the streaking, but round two is even bettter IMHO so perhaps the modelling Gods knew that you could do better! The engine looks very realistic and the open panel is a very good idea. With the top wing on you are well on the way to completion - and another mini-masterpiece to add to your collection.
Stephen.

The figure will be a nice complement to the plane. The rivet counter in me went back to see if you had left the cushion off the seat.........which you had ;) :) Nice planning ahead.

Thanks Nigel, I hope you are correct in that the figure will complement the build. The first time I am working on a figure this large with Acrylics! Yes, I do all of My Triplanes from JG1 that are in the appropriate time frame for parachutes minus the cushion 8)

Todays progress on the figure and Triplane. I have done oil weathering on the aircraft and painted the Face and Helmet with oils on the figure. I have also painted the base coat on the figures uniform.

That pose looks great next to the aircraft. Excellent idea to add the figure.

Thanks Nigel. The only work I did on this one yesterday was adding the ropes to the chute.

Thank You! I have added control wires to the aircraft and done the next to last painting on the figure. Just the 4 bracing wires for cabanes and gear legs left to rig. After that final touch up and clear finish.

Excellent result Rick, that's a lovely build all round. The streaking looks fantastic. The pilot figure goes really well with the plane, the pose really sets off the aircraft. Nice choice and great presentation!

Thanks Steve. I have finished this one more or less. I might need to do a touch up or two. The final clear coat doesn't present a significant difference so just a couple of more photos here. I am Very Happy that My first Tribute build for Dave has turned out fairly well. We miss you David!
