So it is the first of May and I thought I'd participate in the memorial group build. My entry will be, as stated in the subject field, Eduard's SE.5a. Pictures of unstarted kit will come shortly.

Hi again... my first post was a bit weak in detail, so here are a couple of pictures with the first showing the unstarted state of the kit.

The initial thought was to make one model, but then there are two in the Royal Class boxing so why not build both in tandem?! The idea would of course be to build one Wolseley Viper and one Hispano Suiza and to use as many of the bits and pieces included in the box. Right now I'm leaning towards the following schemes, none of which are included in my boxing.

The biggest problem right now is that the second plane doesn't have the wing mounted Lewis gun, which I kind of want to use... and I have to figure out how to fix the white writing on the engine cowling.
Cheers

Excellent choices Fredrik! I have posted these two photos before but thought it might help you with the white lettering on the right side ::)

PS: These two were not published in a book AFAIK. The left side has been published in books, and does have the Schweinhund marking on the nose. If I am not mistaken it was misspelled !
-
Thanks Rick! I'll check the spelling, especially on the right side. 😋 Interesting how much closer the roundel and the W are in your picture compared to the profile.

2 for the price of one! ;)
Looking forward to this!
-
The double build is a great idea and I'm sure Dave would have loved that.
-
A double build is an excellent approach Fredrik! I did the same with the Fokker Dr1 dual combo kit a couple of years back and it does help with the productivity!
As a marking choice, you could do Grid Caldwell's SE5a; he was a Kiwi just like Dave :)

I wouldn't worry about the second plane not having a Lewis Gun, it has a big 'W' on the top wing to make up for it.

Thanks for the suggestion Brad, but I've landed in my initial idea. As Alan said, the red one's got a big 'W' on the top wing.
Slow start, but a start at least...

Great start! You will be flying in no time ;)

Nice to see this!

A Start is a Start No matter how Small! The small bits look good!

I think I was the first to add a build to the memorial group build, but I have also been the least active and the log has been at the very bottom of the build list for a while. Some work has been done, unfortunately not that well documented. Here's where build is as of now.

The aim is of course still to be done well before the deadline, but I'll build one S.E.5 at the time instead of doing a double build.

Excellent update Fredrik. The build is at a point where painting will start to make it look More like an SE5a!

Nice to see some progress here, it's looking very good all round.
-
Excellent progress! The masking will most certainly pay off ;D
-
Nice progress Fredrik.
Looking forward to these.
My favourite aeroplane.

Thanks for the support!
Moving forward... poor pictures though...
Paint has been added and it's time to add the markings... although I'm still looking for a way to add the 'Schweinehund', might resort to buying the decal sheet from Eduard.

Eduard's way of doing the ribtapes makes the masking a bit more challenging than it is on my WNW Harry Tate.

More lovely work Fredrik. Eduard certainly had some interesting ideas about those rib tapes, especially where the roundel is.....
-
Looks great, FAf! That's a lovely red. I have an extra set of markings- except for the roundels- for this S.E.5a from the Eduard 1/48th W-V profipak that I can mail to you free of charge if you want them.

That is very kind of you Vickers - I've sent you and email. I tried to turn the lettering into a mask as well, but it was too small in this case.

Well yes, lovely detail albeit a bit large for the scale and definitely a problem for both decals and masks. In my case the solution is to press down as much as possible and then to spray at a low pressure and with the airbrush perpendicular to the surface in order to minimise the amount of paint that blows in under the mask.
Here's where we stand now...

Home stretch within sight?!

And it worked beautifully. Looking really good.

Outstanding mask work, FAf. Your SE5a is coming along beautifully.
-
Lovely results with your Masks Fredrik! This one is really looking great!

Another example of great masking/airbrushing.

Looking great Fredrick. I really like the masking work you have done. I also appreciate the contrast between the dull coat on the metal engine covers and the satin look of the fabric.

Thanks for the support and special thanks to Vickers for the decals I needed to really finish this one... I'm not quite there, but it's not far off now.

That was actually not intended and it might be gone now... I might try and recreate the difference again, but I thought I'd go the other way - slightly shinier metal than fabric?!
This is where it stands now... rigging started... top wing waiting to go on.

If anyone likes the weathered look of the markings on the top wing, then I can say that it was very unintentional. What probably happened was that the top coat of Mr. Paint Semi Matte, being quite hot, sort of melted and partially blended the white markings with the underlying green. I think it looks ok, and I will definitely not go through the trouble of changing it.

I don?t think it merely looks ok - I think it looks fantastic. :)
-
Looks like a very effective happy accident to me!
-
Agree with the others - and I love the red as well as your results with masking! Looking really good.
Cheers

Just catching up. Your weathering, accidental or not, looks great. The whole project has come together nicely.

Your S.E.5a is looking great, Fredrik, and to my eye the fresher appearance of the red versus the somewhat weathered PC-10 seems appropriate. This is going to be a striking model among your RFC collection!
-
The happy accident is in the past now and no other accidents have occurred, so this is now finished. My first ever S.E.5a and in tribute to Dave. /Fredrik
There might be an angle that is doubled up below, but here she is.

She?s a beauty. Honestly, one of the best paint jobs I?ve seen, in any scale.
-
Now that looks lovely. Excellent finish all round, the masked markings look really effective and the weathering and detail finish is spot on. Dave would have loved this one I am sure.
-
What a superb SE5.a. :o
Truly lovely and a fitting tribute to our friend, Dave.
Well done!!
BB :)
-
Thanks for the praise! I'm mostly just happy that I managed to complete it.
I think that what Dave would have liked the most, and the thing I like the most as well, is the fact that Erik aka Vickers came to the rescue and simply gifted me the decals for this kit, which meant that I could add the 'Schweinhund' to the front of the plane. This forum is full of friendship and helpfulness and Des and Dave and all of the rest of us were/are a part of that. /Fredrik
-
Well done Faf. What a remarkable job.
Alan.
-
Magnificent work, FAf. Your S.E.5a looks truly wicked. Well done!
-
Bravo Fredrik, excellent S.E.5, Dave is thrilled.
Perhaps your first but we hope not your last.
-
That?s a beautiful and eye catching S.E 5a! Great work.
Cheers
Matt
-
Lovely, lovely work, F. That's a cracking SE.
If that's your first, please build more!
I've always loved Cecil Lewis' chutzpah in getting back from imprisonment and painting his SE red with a German oath on the nose - what a guy. Have you seen him talking about his WWI experiences on the BBC Voices of History series? Great tribute to him as well.
Sandy
-
Stunning work! ;D
-
YOur SE.5a looks might fine! The scheme does a lot, too
-
Congratulations!
That's really nice.
