Title: Perhaps the Strangest Model Kit Ever...
Post by: Dutch522 on April 27, 2024, 12:37:58 PM
Don't get me wrong, I love Japan and all things Japanese (except nattō, that fermented soybean paste...who decided that was a good idea?), but when I saw this kit I really had to stop and reflect a moment or two...

A 1:1 cup of ramen? There are three separate warning labels not to pour boiling water in and eat it.

However, quirky as it is, I have to say I love Bandai's little sanding sticks  :D

I saw the thread title and said to myself "Whatever it is, it can't possibly be stranger than that full-scale Cup Noodle kit"  ;D

Don't believe the warnings. It's delicious.......So is the Mr Hobby Saki....

Zac, that's hilarious! Great minds think alike, I guess ;D

I really don't know why I'm surprised, given that you can see ultra-realistic 1:1 model food in just about every restaurant window in Japan.

(and Steve, does Gunze make a Mr Hangover Cure as well...?)

@Davos522
Don't forget to think about weathering and ageing when painting the noodles  8)

The overall dimensions in length are good but the span is about 2mm too short. They have captured the overall tapering shape but it doesn't quite taper correctly at the base like the real subject. Colour call outs are all wrong, font on the container and the amount of corn isn't quite right compared to contemporary references. We don't even get an option for flavour sachets. Such a disappointment, I really was hoping for the definitive cup noodle kit. Hopefully one day a competent manufacturer will do this subject real justice.

Any conversion potential? Noodles with chicken, noodles with tofu, fried noodles, … the possibilities would be endless….

I'm going to wait for the Aviattic decals before I do mine......

Just to clarify, I didn't actually buy this kit, after all, I build 1:32, not 1:1! I took the photograph in my favorite hobby shop just outside Hartford, Connecticut, and when I went back a couple of weeks later it was gone, so there's some happy ramen-fan out there gloating over it :D

I haven't gotten this good a laugh out of a thread in donkey's years. Brad, your "review" was absolutely brilliant (hopefully Tamiya's upcoming line of edible 1:35 WWII Soviet armor kits made of beet-based plastic will get higher marks), and Nigel, I hear Richard is barring no holds on his efforts to get that laser-printed noodle texture exactly right...

. Hopefully one day a competent manufacturer will do this subject real justice.

And in the right scale!

Brad you Crushed that review. The reference material is available, why can't they get it right?

After this thread was created I showed pics of the kit to my girlfriend and she was as confounded as the rest of us...but now I'm wondering if perhaps this is the kit to get me out of the modelling doldrums? Time to start saving my pennies...
