Title: Photos from my 2013 Javelina HAM hunt (HAM = Handgun, Archery. Muzzeloader)
Post by: Galloway on February 12, 2013, 07:46:16 AM
2013 Javelina HAM Hunt.. going back Wed. to see if I can find them again? My friend Jerry took his first Javelina with a pistol on Sat.

Just thought some may wish to see what Arizona actually looks like in the wild........ Love it here......... so much to see out there........... ;-)

This is why I am not getting much modeling done lately!

The last photo is the Javelina I took year before last........ (in case anyone was wondering what a Javelina actually was?)

Just a little History because someone asked on another site.... some might find this interesting ?

This is Florence Arizona on the Gila River .......... the coke ovens you can see in one of my photos across the Gila river which runs under the neat bridge in the photos.... a little history on the ruins..... and the town of Cochran Arizona ........

Cochran's post office was established January 3, 1905 and discontinued January 15, 1915. Cochran was a mining camp but also served as a stop on the Sante Fe, Prescott, Phoenix railroad. The town supported about 100 people and had a general merchandise store, boardinghouse, and many other establishments. Today all that remains are the coke ovens across the river. The town was named for John. S. Cochran, the first postmaster.

Florence was founded in 1866 and became the Pinal County seat of government in 1875.

Just north of Florence during World War II was located a large prisoner of war camp for German and Italian prisoners of war, mainly captured during the North Africa campaign.  McFarland State Historic Park in downtown Florence has a display and information on this period of Arizona history.

Florence is one of the oldest towns in the county, and is regarded as a National Historic District with over 25 buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Mmmmm.  Bacon's good.  In what part of Arizona do you live, Ken?  We've got a house in Tuscon which I've only seen twice.  Gotta get back down there soon before it gets hot.
Cheers,
Bud

You're only about 2 hrs from Tucson, then.  I let you know when we're heading down that way.  I'll buy you a pint or two.
Cheers,
Bud

  Ken,
Nice looking Hog my old friend. Couldn't help but notice the pistol, what make and caliber? I'm assuming it's .44 Mag . Plenty of knock down power for the task for certain. I'd have to let the Javelina way too close to use a pistol ,think I'd stick to the ol'30.06. Beautiful State too.
Highest Regards,
Gregory Jouette

I'm interested in the calibre and distance too. Handgun shooting under stress is much more difficult than TV and the movies would have many believe.

Cheers,

Chris

Ken,
You've said it so well, "hunting is just an excuse to get out there". I feel that too, being a "purist" hunter who guages the success of the hunt not on the kill but rather the whole experience. Beautiful country in your neighborhood, and so much history. Enjoyed your photos.
Cheers,
Lance :)

Thanks all The pistol used is a Smith & Wesson 586 .357 Magnum with 8 3/8" barrel the distance was 72 yards wich I was alittle shocked at.... I was shooting up hill and she was facing me .....

I agree Lance, I always say the work starts after the kill as I would just be heart-broken to kill something and waste the meat like so many people do..... many people think Javelina is not good eating ... but I'll bet they didn't get theirs cleaned ASAP and on ice ASAP! Hell Beef would be nasty tasing if you slaughtered it then left it for a few hours before cleaning......

 Thanks Again guys!

Can't wait to get back out there! Going all alone this time and that is FUN also in its own strange way!

Ken,
Man I miss Arizona and yes it is beautiful there. Left there in '87 to go into the Air Force went back a few times. Last time I was there was '94 after they built the loop in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area. Thanks for the pics they're awesome and I hope the pig was good. They scared the hell out of me a few times up around the Fountain Hills area back when there were a few homes there.
