Title: Eduard Fokker D.VIII
Post by: Softscience on April 07, 2024, 10:21:58 AM
This is the Eduard 1/48 kit built as a supposed machine flown by Theo Osterkamp in early fall 1918. Some joyless types say it is fictitious, but I don't care. I wanted something fun.

The kit wasn't that much fun to build. But that isn't Eduard's fault. I started it in 2019 and set it aside back in its box until just last week. The model was crushed in its box, and the landing gear struts had to be entirely rebuilt. It's all very fragile now, and there is some sideways shift of the whole UC when the model sits on its legs. As a result the whole end stage of the build was done with breath held and very slow, careful movements. Same with the photos.

Which might be why I didn't notice that I forgot to trim the excess elastic thread from the starboard wing control horn. Oh well. It'll have to be. The model got put in the back of a display case and isn't getting touched, until it needs to be moved to make room for something else.  If we're pretending Osterkamp flew such a gaudily painted plane, we can also pretend he had a white pennant tied to a control horn

Funny how artists and craftspeople all tend to pick apart their own work, I was just doing it myself in my post last night... but tiny imperfections aside, this is an absolutely beautiful model, and very inspirational for my upcoming (some one of these days!) Mikro Mir 1:32 build (this scheme is one of the kit options, although I'll be doing one of Stefan Stec's post-war Polish aeroplanes).

That is a waspish little model! I think that your self criticism is unjustified: that is a first class model and finish.

Stephen.

Thank you, gentlemen. Next project is going to be a bit more subdued. But just a bit.

That looks really good, very nicely done all round. I am unfortunately one of those joyless types that obsesses over accuracy but do agree that sometimes you just have to have fun, and this is a great looking scheme.

What an excellent build.  As already said, we are own worse enemies.  The main thing is it is finished, looks good and you had a good time building it.  Sounds like a win to me.

Wow!  That’s really nice. I like the way you depicted the wing streaks.

Despite the problems you mentioned the model looks so sweet. Great colours and a very fine finish.

Oh my, that is a pretty little thing! Well done on a striking build! I have one of these in the stash and you might just have inspired me to dust it off.

Top shelf, sir!
