Title: Luke's Spad XIII
Post by: Big Sky Modeler on February 10, 2024, 05:48:01 AM
This is the 1/48 DML kit.  Nice kit, especially for it's age.

Very nice work, you handled the camo scheme very well and the end result looks great.

Very very nice. How did you do the double wrapped rigging? It looks so real.

It was a pain.  That's how I handled it.   :)

I used .010" music wire colored with sharpie marker.  The stiffeners are plastic strips 0.10" thick and painted brown.  I glued the wires to the sides of the plastic (that was the pain part) and added the wraps.  The wraps are strips of metal cupcake foil painted tan and glued in place.  Cupcake foil is great for making certain parts because it can be bent (in this case wrapped around) easily and it retains that shape.  They are a bit over scale, but I didn't want to attempt lighter wire and thinner plastic.  Maybe next time.

Thanks for the explanation. Great job!

Wow! This one's a stunner, Jim. Oddly enough the thing that impresses me the most is the X on the engine bearers, visible through the mesh. That's attention to detail, I'd always noticed it from the famous photo of Luke:

Great job all around, and I'm with Przemo, those doubled SPAD wires are brilliant!

Nicely made, looks great.
Very impressive treatment of those awkward bound wires, great result.

VERY nice Spad; the finish is really well done and the colors look great! . I've only done the "wrapped double rigging" thing once and can really appreciate what you've accomplished with it here, lovely work.
You've done a magnificent job on this kit, it's one you can and should be extremely proud of!
Cheers, and thanks for sharing this here!

Fantastic work on this stalwart kit, well done! It still holds up well today.

I have fond memories of building this one in the 1990s in my teens; this one along with the DML Triplane were real eye openers for me, having never played with photoetch before.

Good stuff!

I really love what you've done here. As others have mentioned, the paint work, the rigging, and the little details really bring this one to life.

Brad I agree this kit is still a good one, some 30 years later.  The kit is well designed and fits together well.  The main areas that show its age are the instruments (they are PE with raised details, I replaced with current decals, PE, and bezels), the machine guns (I replaced with Part Accessories Vickers guns), and no stringer detail on the decking behind the cockpit to the tail (I added very fine mono thread).  I build the DML Fokker E.V kit several years ago and was impressed with the design and fit of that kit as well.
