This is my version of the WNW Albatros DV.
Georg Strasser's mount from Jasta 17. I think a lovely scheme and glad it has finally come out on the many 1/32 decal sheets for WNW's superlative kit. These markings are hand made decals.

The wood is oils and washes over Floquil Antique white. Then pin washed with raw umber to pick up the nail heads embossed with a gear cog. Both clear yellow and orange were then used to differentiate panels.
The figure is modified from Model Cellars "Werner Voss." I changed the head, stuck a cigarette in his mouth , original photo in Osprey's Albatros Aces-part 2 shows Georg smoking and I used expoxy putty to apply the leather gaiters he is wearing. A couple of medals on his chest complete the easy conversion.

I also noticed in the original photo that the winglet between the wheels was missing, so using the Smithsonian Albatross restoration publication's drawings, I replaced it with an axle and spreader bar. I also got the little cotter pins in that hold on the wheels. I'm also pround of the cowling retaining springs that I added!

This evocative shot , as the other three pictures, are the work of my good friend and burgeoning modeler, Tom Evens.
Any constructive thoughts, comments, discussion topics are, of course, welcome!
This is my first posting to this forum that I've come to enjoy and check daily!

That is one beautiful looking Albatros. I love the black & white a lot....

KA,
Now, that's a great first posting, magnificent model! I am really impressed with your weathering effect, particularly around the wheels and struts. The "pin wash" worked very well, a technique I've been meaning to try but somehow never remember to do. Last, the wood effect is remarkable, and the varying shades of overspray really enhance the panel differentiation as you say.
Welcome here, and Thanks for sharing a truly beautiful "Albie" with us, one of my favorites.
Cheers,
Lance

Absolutely gorgeous vignette all around, KA! ;D Great modeling on all fronts. The Alby has a first-rate finish, and excellent weathering, particularly the landing gear. The figure is extremely well-executed and painted. I assume that's your work as well.
Welcome to the forum! What an outstanding introduction! ;) Thanks for sharing your superb work with us. I look forward to learning from you. Well done.
Regards,
Bob

Man! That is one stunning looking Albie and figure.
A great introduction to the forum and lets hope the start of many builds to share with us.
Cheers,

Welcome to the forum, KA! What a spectacular introduction. This is one of the prettiest D.V's I've seen yet and that figure is pure perfection. It doesn't get any better than this.
Cheers,
Bud

That's a beauty!

Welcome to our forum, Ken. I have seen your Albatros a few hours before on hyperscale. Tis is simply one of the most impressing Albatros I have ever seen in terms of painting and weathering. Your woodwork is fantastic and the light shading, for example on the jacket of Strasser is a class of its own.
Congratulations!
Dirk

Superb, Albatros DV !

Absolutely brilliant in all aspects, the overall finish of the Albatros is superb with perfect wood work and excellent weathering, a true masterpiece. And the figure is another masterpiece which really enhances the entire scene, the B & W photo is magic.
Welcome to the forum and I hope to see plenty more of your work soon, this has been one very spectacular introduction.

Fantastic rendition of a war-weary Albatros. Absolutely realistic!
-
Ken, excellent work and great to see all those particular techniques used. With the wood effect decal explosion out there its nice to see the "old" way of doing it executed so well.

As the others said, KANiles, that's quite a triumphant introduction. Beautiful bird!
Any chance you've got in-progress photos so that you could post an abbreviated build log? I'd love to see a step-by-step of your weathering and wood work. I'm sure you'd have a captive audience here.
Looking forward to some more,
Lindsay

That is really very nice, not only the Albatros but the figure and base really set it off.
I'd like to know how you did the base as well.

Wonderful work. Love the wood grain.

Steve,
I'm so new to this "posting thing," I hope I do this response correctly and I hope others haven't taken offense that I had not replied to their kind comments earlier than this.
I've not seen any decals applications for wood grain in person ( model shows, etc.) but have seen it used many times on forums such as this. They do look good, no doubt. I just have so much fun "slapping" the oils around until it looks right! One other technique that I use, after all paint, washes and pin washes are on ,are many clear coats to " bury " the decals that are used , with many micro-mesh sandings in- between. The decal option would not stand up to that treatment too well. There is just so much subtle detail on the WNW kits too, that I would hate to loose all that under decal sheets also.

The base is a piece of 10 x 10 red oak that I sanded, stained and put little felt feet on to raise it slightly. The goundwork is a standard "plastc wood" filler that spread around into an appropriate outline with some very fine gravel ( model RR supplies) pressed in before dry. Diluted white glue was painted on then for some static grass and grass clumps placed randomly to break up the unifomity of the static grass. All sprayed with highly thinned earth tones, some dark washes and dry brushing complete the scene.

Lindsay,
I dug up a few more shots. I hope you enjoy, I don't have any in-progress shots of the wood graining. I have a Roland in the stack for my next project. I'm looking at turning that one into a "B" version, and then a full natural wood finish. All that planking!!

The fuselage drain holes are framed by small p/e washers, and the fuel sump extending through one of the covers was added. The cross bracing goes up through the holes in the fuselage and attaches to the fuselage formers under the pilot's seat.

The intake manifold is "asbestos wrapped" with Tamiya tape.

The spark plugs, of which you can see down through the exhaust pipes from each cylinder, are made up of 5 parts each ( I wish I had the Taurus ones!) a stretched tube, brass wire through, a model RR plastic nut and then a brass p/e nut slid over that then a smaller p/e nut slid over the attached spark plug wire.

In this shot, please note the magneto key hanging outside the cockpit in "safe mode."

Interesting camouflage, very well done!

KA
Great modeling job on Strasser's Jasta 17 Albatros! I' have been laboring on a Jasta 17 Albatros of myself. I hope I can come close to your great modelling achievement. Your build has inspired me to keep slogging along!
Keep up the good work!
Tim

Your Albatros is one of the nicest which I have seen. Very well done!

Fabulous woodwork effect!

That is one beautiful Albatros from nose to tail. Excellent wood tone and weathering, and such a striking lovely scheme. May I ask what brand of paint and colors you used on the upper camoflage? I have some Xtracolor tins for the greens and mauve, but have not had an opportunity to try them. Your camoflage colors look really great!
-
B&W picture is outstanding!!

Thanks for the additional close up shots. They really show off the detail, paint and weathering work youve put into it!!

That is just lovely. Not enough superlative words in the language. This gives us something to shoot for!
Thanks for posting...
So, what's next? ;) ;)

Three pages of Superlatives and yet I missed this one :-[
As all others have said this is an excellent example of Modeling skills, Artistry, and detail work! Phenominal!!!

One more I had missed! Absolutely gorgeous plane and scene.
-
I am afraid I have also somehow missed this absolute jewel. The Albatros is
a literal work of art and the more studied the better it gets. The figure and
display complement the aeroplane perfectly. Wow!
Cheers,
Ernie :)

yes! very nice all around.
