This is my last offering of 2023 or my first of 2024. This will be my first offering for my customer this year and I think this is going to be WNW number 15 that I have built for him. The best of both worlds. I get to build excellent kits but do not have to find a place for them. He chose Max Holtzen's color scheme and I look forward to it. I have built for him since 1997. This will be a straight out of the box build.
The build starts with the interior and there are no surprises here. The color of the interior is grey-green which means RLM2. At least that what it means to me. A little weathering to the interior and then on to the engine. As is with all WNW kits I have built, the molding is crisp and the parts almost fall together. My completion date should be a about mid-January.

This is a lovely kit, I managed to get one at Telford at a not too extortionate price. Looking forward to seeing this one progress.

I'm with Nigel, really looking forward to this one. I'd love to find one of these kits, but the idea of paying four or five times the original price puts them waaaay out of my price range.

That looks like a fantastic kit. I would love to build a Wingnut Wings model one day.

Excellent start on a great kit.

A kit on the top of my wish list! Can't wait to see a great build ;)

^I'm with them: would love one but highly unlikely to get one any time soon. I'm so jealous of both you and your customer!
I love me a D.III so I'm very excited to follow along.

The main framework is complete and there were no surprises. As with all WNW kits built out of the box, this is almost a shake and bake kit model.
I skip around when I build so the upper wing was my first goal. The silver is S&J spray, left unpolished. Both upper and lower surfaces were sprayed with Future Floor Wax and the decals were applied. A coat of Future sealed the decals. Some under wing shutter work and the top wing is complete.
Next was the engine. The upper and lower halves were spray painted. All of the other parts were hand painted just prior to attachment. Again, no surprises. All of the parts are clearly marked and the fit is excellent. The entire engine was built even though most of it will disappear into the fuselage to show the excellent attention to detail of the kit.
The next step will be to detail the cockpit area and I could have the fuselage closed up this week. For those of you who want this kit, I can highly recommend it. The potential for super detailing will be limited only by your desire to inflict pain upon yourselves.

Amazing work! The scheme is also my favorite of them all ;D

A nice start, this is coming together well. Mine is calling me from the shelf......
-
Thank you for the fine compliments. I could have another progress shot or two later today.

Clipping right along as usual, Dennis! You're a bad influence, now I'm thinking of getting the Roden kit to add to my slowly-expanding 1:32 replacement stash (having given the 1:48 & 1:72 kits to my boys). These were truly beautiful aeroplanes.

Oh wow, she looks fantastic already! Bravo!

;D ;D That's a brilliant line!

A shot of the interior under construction. The interior is very well constructed but here is where the modeller must exercise extreme care. The fit does not allow for much variation and the interior must be installed exactly or the fuselage halves will not close up.
The second shot is of the fuselage, wings and under carriage with no glue. That is how precise these kits are.
The third photo is the interior glued into place. It will joined by the other half of the fuselage and any putty work will be done.

Been quite the few days but the model is complete.
The first set of photo is application of decals. The decals were without any flaws. They came out the water easily with no breakage. The fuselage decal is three pieces that were applied all at the same time. The top center decal goes on first and the two side decals are second. Keeping the decals wet, I was able to move them around until they fit. I have heard some have had the decals come apart, these did not. I did have a problem with bubbles, especially the wings. I am going to point the finger at the modeller, not the decals.
Final construction is applying the top wing. Again, I trimmed the locating pins about 1/16th of an inch and enlarged the hole just a little. After that, the top wing almost installed itself. The model is now rigged and all the little parts were installed. These go on last so as not to interfere with the rigging.

Here is the completed kit.
I have read some of the comments about the interiors not fitting well. WNW kits are very precise kits, not allowing for any flaws in the building. Since my builds do not meet that standard, I have fit problems. Look at the photo of the dry fit and how perfect it is. What is not seen in my build is the amount of putty needed after the interior was installed. This is not a criticism of WNW kits. They are at the highest level of models I have ever built. They need your highest level of construction, especially when installing the interior.

Next WNW kit: Roland CLII (late)
Currently under construction: Another vacuform to be revealed soon.

Beautiful, Dennis, as always! I was just wondering yesterday how you were coming along with this project.
I've always considered it a tossup whether the Albatros D-series were the most elegant scouts in the Great War, or this one. I guess I'll go with the Albatros, since I started building the Aurora D.III/-Va hybrid when I was about five... and I never saw an Aurora Pfalz untill many, many years after they were no longer .79c.

A very handsome looking build, this has come together very nicely.
I find the WNW kits variable. Some fall together (like he Pfalz DXII) but others have challenges (like the Fokker DVII with all the different panel options). But they are still all fantastic kits!
Looking forward to seeing the Roland.
