Hi all,
The 'HPH Models' 1:32nd scale resin model of the Italian Macchi M.5 float plane.
This is a commission build for the Commander of the Italian Frigate 'Federico Martinengo'.
His ship was named after the Italian naval pilot of WW1, Federico Carlo Martinengo.
I've previously built a version of this model and have a build log on my web site.
The only real differences between the two models will be the aircraft markings.
As such, I'll not create a detailed build log for this model here on the forum, just progress shots,
Mike

One of my very favorite Great War aeroplanes. Thanks for posting these, Mike, I've read the previous build log a couple of times now but it's still a treat to see this one!

External base for gun sight.
Support struts for lower wing floats (Brass tube and rod).
Support struts for the tailplane (Brass tube and rod).
Lower half of the rudder post,

One lucky client Mike! Beautiful work on a beautiful aircraft.

It's a pleasure to see your fine engineering skills on display again. More lovely work.
-
Hi all
I've replaced the kit supplied 'Z' struts between the engine support frame and underside of the upper wing.
The kit struts don't align correctly with their attachment points and not every strut has a protruding locating rod.
The replacement struts are Brass tube (formed to an aerofoil profile) with internal rod.

Brilliant work on this... erm...challenging kit!
BTW, if you would like to share this build with other Macchi fans, we have a FB group dedicated to Macchi aircraft of all eras. Search for Wacky Macchis if so inclined...

More excellent work Mike, this is definitely another challenging build.

Outstanding work Mike!

Excellent work :)

Hi all,
Some progression the Macchi M.5.
Painted using 'Tamiya' acrylics and oil paint for the wood hull.
'Aviattic' linen effect decals applied to flight surfaces.
Personal markings are custom made by Mika at 'Arctic Decals'.
The model, especially the engine still require weathering.

Lovely work Mike, this is looking really good. Can't wait to see more....
-
Just gorgeous. I love those M.5s!

on a side note to a wondefully built kit, I’ll add a comment on the green mouse depicted on the plane, as maybe not of all ypu know its meaning in Italian.
The green mause, or rat, refears to an italian slang expression: “ti faccio vedere i sorci verdi”, that translate, more or less, into: “I’ll show you the green rats” that means: “I’ll let you through a very hard time”.
it is not very used nowadays, but it was common in the past. consider this expression: “by boss made me see the green rats” meaning “i had a hard time at work”, or “if you don’t stop it, i’ll show you the green rats!”, meaning “if you don’t stop it i’ll beat you up in a bad way”.
may be you also saw the green rats on ww2 planes as it was the insigna of 205 bombing squad the first to recive the SM79.
ciao

That’s very interesting Edo thank you………..for sure in this forum we can all learn a lot from each other!

Hi Edo,
I didn't know the origin of the rat marking.
Thanks for that,
Mike

Beautiful work as always Mike.
I'm certain that your client will be very pleased!

Hi all
The engine installation for the Macchi M.5 is ready to be fitted to the hull.
The propeller will be fitted later in this build,
The frame bracing wires are 0.08 mm diameter mono-filament with blackened 0.4 mm diameter Brass tube.
Turnbuckles are the 'Gaspatch' 1:48th scale metal versions.

Very convincing!

Great work Mike! Engine looks stunning :)

Hi all
The model has moved on a bit since my last post.
The upper wing has been fitted and all wire rigging done.
I just have the outer wing support struts to make and fit.
These will be made from 0.9 mm formed Brass tube.
Also I have to fit and rig the two ailerons, under wing floats and propeller

I really love this Mike.
Did they say why they wanted those grey moustache on the pilot face?
-
The moustache does look a bit incongruous ‘on the face of it’………

Hi,
The Commander of the Italian Frigate that this model is made for has a similar moustache.
He asked for the figure to have it.

Hi David,
I see what you did there ;D
Mike

Mike, as always, beautifully done!

Hi all
The final part of the Macchi M.5 is now fitted.
This is a real wood laminated propeller with metal erosion tips.
It was made by Alexey Belov at 'Proper Plane', based in Ukraine.
I'll post completed model shots soon,
Mike
