Title: 1913 Deperdussin Monocoque
Post by: Tim Mixon on November 28, 2023, 03:28:47 AM
This aircraft seems way ahead of its time in design. Very streamlined compared to the other entries in the Gordon Bennett races.

A modified racing version with clipped wings won the Gordon Bennett races of 1912 and 1913.  The top recorde speed was 130 mph. A true rocket ship in that era!
Thanks for looking in!

Another nice one.
Almost SteamPunk in its own way!

You did a great job subduing this little brute, Tim. And it really was ahead of its time, if it had spats it'd look like something from the 1930s. And IIRC that 130mph speed was only being equalled by Great War aeroplanes in the last generation of fighters (with cutting-edge inline engines) five or six years later.

I think that's turned out really well considering the challenges you had. It really is an intriguing aircraft and I think the build gives a really good impression of how it must have looked.

First class Tim, the more so given the material that you were working with.

The Gordon Bennett races turbo-charged aircraft and aero-engine development. It was abundantly clear in the 1911 race that biplanes were too slow and that the future of fast aeroplanes was via monoplanes. The increase in speed is also interesting as the winner in 1911 achieved approximately 76 mph. In two short years the winners speed had nearly doubled!

I missed this. How could I have missed this!

It is refreshing to see a model thas it not often mentioned on this forum.
