Bin a fairly long time sice i posted here something due to other modeling outside the W.W.1 range .
For now i'm back with a project which i waited for until the neccesary decals and info would be available.
Jasta 14 was a fairly unknow Jasta at the end of W.W.1. Still some very well known pilot's where part of this Jasta in their flying day's. One of the best known was Rudolf Berthold.
I will depict a model of the Fokker Dr.I of one of my Jasta 14 photo's which is published in this book.....

The machine of Lt. d.r. Jozef Schulte....

Kit will be the 1/32 Meng kit, decals are from Aviattic. The resin engine cowl with the kidney shaped cooling slot's is also from Aviattic. Also i will use the cooling jackets and the MG barrels from Master for the two Spandau machineguns.

Starting the cockpit......i developed my own wood grain color chart recently, so time to use this.

Ammo box swirl's is a decal from Aviattic.

Pilot seat and at the back also a linnen decal from Aviattic.

In between, i tackled the LMG's, beginning with the brass cooling jackets and barrels which i burnished into Ushi burnishing fluid.

The end result........, not yet to be honest ;D

The machine of Lt. Schulte was equiped with a thirt gunsight in the middle, in line with the telescopic sight.

Nice work, achieving a realistic weathered look.

Outstanding start! The cockpit is lovely! Like Ken said, the weathering looks realistic.

Oh my, this is looking seriously good. I'm tuned in to follow along.
Also I'm very impressed by the colour chart, excellent idea!

Thank's guy's for the nice feedback :)
Fuselage is glued, time to start with the underside of the fuselage.
The stitch at the underside of the fuselage comes like a plastic part which has to be glued into a slot.
This part did not fit very well, and the detail is way overdone. So i decided to fill up the slot and sand it smooth as the Aviattic decals have a very nice and subtle stitch printed.
A second round with putty was needed to asure that everything was smooth enough.
After painting the fuselage in gloss white i attempted my first try with the Aviattic decals.
Ok that went very good.......but disaster struck when my attempt on the other side made me use some Micro Set..........BIG MISTAKE........ >:(
(https://i.imgur.com/OiBpHeg.jpg)
These decals need no Set or Sol what's so ever, a lesson learned rapidly with a cursing aftermath on my account.......... :(
Ok, i asked Richard (Aviattic) a new set of decals, and these will be delivered the coming day's :)
Time to start the engine.............
No aftermarketh for this nice piece from the box.......just some copper wire and some paint and a wash.

A dry-fit onto the fuselage
(https://i.imgur.com/Of42EMo.jpg)
And with the engine cowl
(https://i.imgur.com/UbYBhjF.jpg)
Most of the Jasta 14 Fokker Dr.I's where modified with kidney shaped cooling slots. This was an in field modification and specific with Jasta 14 aircraft. The kit has 3 engine cowl's provided but none with these kidney shaped cooling slots.

Very nice work so far. I will be doing Preiss's Jasta 14 machine at some point, the Aviattic Jasta 14 decals look really good.

Thank's Nigel :)
Very good choice regarding Reinhold Preiss his machine. In this particular scout Preiss was shot down and made an crash landing behind enemy lines and was made POW.
I've got all the Aviattic decals regarding the Fokker Dr.I Jasta 14 markings. These decals are indeed very good. Just take care when you add them. Just tepid water and no Set or Sol and you will be fine.

Hi Danny - Amazing work! I was particularly impressed with your woodgrain color chart. Any chance of posting the three sheets as separate pictures? I could not quite read the text in the picture you posted, and would find this incredibly helpful- other modelers probably would as well.
Thanks!

Super work Danny, a shame about the decals but with a new set on the way it won't hold you back for long. I love that word grain cour chart you created!

Your engine looks excellent! Love the cowling also.

Hi Danny, just started reading your build log, but I'm hooked already. And as usual I'm blown away by the consistently high quality of the work on this forum (and how much I'm learning on a daily basis!).
All best,

Thank's guy's for the nice comments. ;)
So, after my big mistake regarding the Aviattic decals...........Like i said before, the left side fuselage was my first attempt with the Aviattic decals and things went totally wrong just because i didn't took the advice that was instructed with the decals. I ordered new ones and for now i can say, decalling is done with succes......... :)
So, my opinion about the Aviattic decals............Well they are different then the decals i'm used to. It's strange, but these decals don't need any Set or Sol but just plain tap water to place them onto the model. Just wipe the water from under the decal, and let them dry firmly...........after that, thing's are just perfect.
Today i took some time to paint all other part's in the appropriate colors. It's not that easy because i don't have much color reference regarding this scout. Cowl and all other metal parts where painted in a mix of different MRP colors to match the colors on the fabric. The underside color of the fabric was light blue, so i took a MRP light blue color to paint the strut's and underside belly plate. Colors of the blue fabric and the painted metal parts can never be the same, so here i took some artistic freedom to achieve the reality as close as possible.

That's all for now.

Looking good, Danny, that's a beautiful and unusual scheme. And I'll pay attention to your advice about the Aviattic decals... I own a couple of sets, but haven't actually tried to apply any of them yet.

Thank's :)
It's indeed a very rare scheme as it was never mentioned by any history books. Jasta 14 was a less know German unit and the machine i am building is very rarely seen at any photo's of that time.

Just follow the instructions firmly and you will be good. ;)

Just catching up. This is great work. I have some Aviattic sheets and I'm only concerned about the size. That's a lot of decal to slide around. Apparently warm water is the best and I have a mug warmer to keep my saucer of water at a good temp.

Lovely work Danny, this is looking fabulous. It's making my Jasta 14 DrI climb up the to do list....... ;)

Don't worry, the decals are tough and are fairly easy to move around. They can stretch though (helps getting the bits to match up) so don't overwork them. Also, they tend to come in sections where they need to conform over curves (like top wings) so that makes life a bit easier.

Beware of warm water Steve, these decals are really fast in warm water. I prefer light tepid water.

Fascinating work Danny. The Dr.1 looks great.

Really stunning work! I like these more colorful schemes :)
Thanks for the tips on Aviattic decals - I've ordered my first set and will be getting them soon ;D

Danny, wow! That is some amazing and beautiful work my friend. Jasta 14 is a fantastic choice and the book on Jasta 14 is a must have.

This is looking very, very good Danny! And some very useful tips using Aviattic decals...
-
Lovely work Danny! She's shaping up very nicely and I agree with the others' positive comments about the novel (to some of us) colour scheme.
-
Thanks for posting the woodgrain charts. As Dave said, these will be most helpfull for many of us. I still have some "wood-graining" to do so I will be looking at these for sure!
The engine looks very realistic and the colour scheme is odd but attractive. Way to go Danny!
Cheers,
Willem

Hey there Danny - this one is looking excellent, great work on the details and painting.
The decals have also come up very nicely. My first time using Aviattic decals for the famous Fokker streaking came last year on the 1/48 kit. I did need to muck about with them and do some trimming to get them to fit, but the effects are excellent, as you have shown.
Top shelf modelling, sir!
Cheers,
BC

Thank's everyone for the nice comments.
By the time i write this, the Fokker Dr.I is finnished.
More phot's of the progress wasn't possible due the lack of time, but the finnished work can be seen in the appropriate topic.
Here's a little taste.....

absolutely amazing. you could have stopped at the cockpit, and it would have been light years ahead of my attempts.
regarding the wood samples charts: how did you go about making this?
thanks

Hi Guy's, it's bin a while i made a visit overhere due to a working accident in wich i broke my foot. So sorry for not answering right away your questions or comments. At the moment i'm still not able to walk arround on both legs. So i'm hooked on my wheelchair and my crutches.

Thank's. I made one color and noticed all went well, so i made another. In this stage i decided to make a color chart of ten colors. But with this technique you can go and never stop, so therefore i decided to make a more extended color chart with more different colors.

Please don't apologise Danny! My goodness, I'm so sorry to hear that. Please look after yourself: as much as I'm enjoying the build I'm happy to wait.

Danny, I'm behind and I just now caught up with your build. Beautiful work! I have the Aviattic decals, but in 1/72nd, so I'm pretty excited about trying them out.
