I know I have been missing for a while... just busy I guess, though still modelling... When this delightful kit was released I just knew I had to get one, it's a favourite subject of mine and a historically important aircraft... Before I mess it up or consign it to the Shelf of Doom, I can assure you it is a wonderfully produced, moulded, engineered and detailed kit, and very easy to build (so far) probably better than WNW...

This is an almost essential reference...
...And into the plastic!
My chosen scheme has a semi-circular cut out in the trailing edge of the upper wing, I didn't have precise measurements or detailed photos so I just fudged it... There are two blobby looking things on the upper corners of the fuselage sides where the sprues attach, they should be there and not removed as they fit the forward part of the tailplane, just seen on the left of the photo...
Enjoy your modelling!
Regards,
Marc

Always loved these little aeroplanes, and I'll look forward to following your progress! By all accounts the CSM kit is a work of art... they're already out of stock at a lot of Stateside outlets, so it seems they must be selling pretty briskly, too, which is encouraging.

What they said - welcome back and what a way to return!

Thank You Zac, Rick, Richie, Steve and Dave for checking in and the welcome back, it's good to be in the saddle... err... wicker chair again! It takes a bit of thought getting back into the techniques. CSM have great colour call-outs, but no reference to actual paints but a quick glance at a WNW instruction for eg. the Camel or Pup should sort that out... No project is really started unless you throw some paint at it, these are thin, airbrushed coats of Tamiya acrylics, Dark yellow for the wood and Deck Tan for the fabric, so I can attack them with oils for that used and dirty look! I tried to find all the wood pieces to do at once, if I could I cleaned them up and left them on the sprue, but some needed more clean up, so are held by the masking tape tabs... I forgot the prop! It needs a lot of clean up and thinning down, not the best part of the kit... There is some nice a aftermarket for this... On with the photos or it never happened...

Good start Marc, you might find the photos in my Flickr album useful. I managed to get some nice interior shots;

Great start! Im looking forward to this one :)

Thank You Ben, Richie and Mike for checking in! Richie, those references are Great! I will use them lots.. Mike, your build is the most comprehensive I've seen and really good, I'm using it already... but mine will never be as good! I'm going for reasonable, but fitting into my limited modelling time! So here we add the wood tones... stage 2 in the Step By Step process... it's been a while since this was spelt out in detail, so forgive me for repeating my method... So I make a mixture of these 3... just a trace of Liquin (it helps oil paint flow and dry quicker), enough white spirit to make it flow, oil paint, (here Burnt Sienna) I love W&N... And a nice big brush...
Brush it on fairly generously on all the wooden parts you can find at once (saves time later...)

Some details...
And more...
.. and wait for 8 hours (or 12) and then brush it along the wood grain with that hairy brush... This creates the wood grain effect.. and after this let it dry for a few days at least... So not much from me for a while! I will get to step 3 soon, I hope!...

Marc

Lovely wood tones Marc! You are catching up with my build quickly. ;D I am looking forward to the next update!

Thank You Richie, Dave and Rick for checking in! I am in no danger of catching up with Rick's lovely build, and just hope to do about the quarter of his quality... this is the build for every-modeller, WW1 or not, the kit is so nice... So on with the wood effect... here I use Tamiya clear colours, acrylic, either orange, yellow or clear itself to seal in the oils and achieve that "wood glow" effect... I am now using this thinner for all Tammiya paints, whether acrylic, enamel or Lacquer, and it makes spraying a pleasure... Please don't use this for Hataka or Vallejo paints... we have tried and it doesn't work!
And here you see the result, the colour of the wood turned out a little on the red side, it looks like cherry wood, not a bad thing, but not where I was aiming, yellow may have been better, too late! All the bits and pieces done... Also the prop is there, after much filing, scraping and filing then a real good sanding it was undercoated in the usual Dark Yellow then a generous coat of Dark Umber W&N in the usual mix... To my surprise, after reviewing as many period photos of Scout props I could see no discernable wood lamination effects, no lighter and darker layers, and very much a darker wood effect, so I went for this effect... I may be wrong but what I wanted... the wood colour can only be described as "walnut"...
So we need some drying time again, and I'll see if I can start some other sub-assemblies, my usual style...
Regards,
Marc

Nice start here. Maybe the framework is a little dark but it is a nice wood effect.

I agree regarding the prop laminations. I was at Shuttleworth recently and spent a lot of time looking at the original props hung on the walls. Very few British props have strongly contrasted laminations and IMO they would be barely discernible in 1/32.
