Title: Bandai Star Wars Y-Wing 1/72
Post by: AngryJazz on August 08, 2023, 05:13:02 AM
As a short break from my more detailed builds I wanted to have some fun with a Bandai kit.

Actually have quite a few of these im my stash, just never really got around to building them... Something else always stole my attention  ;D

But wow what a mistake it was to leave them unbuilt! Must be one of the most enjoyable kits to put together, everything just snaps together in a very clever way. Plastic also sands very nice, just a quick pass and the sprue attachment is gone.

My plan is to build 2 Star Wars kits and make a Rebel base diorama with them. Droids and some maintenance stuff all around.

But for now only the Y-Wing.

After a few nights of work its already taking shape.

You are a rebel and a traitor... (wheeze, wheeze)... take him away!

PS - no, not that D.V, just Dave V.
PPS - I'll be following this one, looks like a fun build!

Hmm i'm sure this piece of space junk will be no harm to the Empire Lord Vader... I mean D.V... Oh no I mean Dave...  ;)

Got the Y-Wing mostly assembled and primed.

Cut a few pieces to be able to pose one of the engines open for maintenance. The canopy also got the same treatment.

I went for a darker body and dry brushed it. Not sure if its the right color for what i want.... Maybe i can see it more clear once some grey is on the engines and cockpit area.

The brown primer is for later chipping as this space ship will be a beaten up and combat proven bomber.

Engine supports cut.

Love that dry-brushing, this is going to be a beauty!

When I saw the first film way back when (and how long ago it seems, now!) one of the things that struck me immediately was the wonderfully beat-up look everything had... except the Imperial ships, of course, nothing but the latest and greatest weaponry for those guys. Too bad they couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with them.

I was actually surprised they managed to get a direct hit on Alderan with that big gun on the Death Star, as a matter of fact :-D

Thanks Tony and Dave! And yes I also really like to look of a Rebel ship that has been to hell and back  ;D
Going to try my best to capture this look and play around with oil weathering. Oils in general is something I would like to improve.

Back to the Y-Wing.

Immediately after looking at my own photos here I could see the effect was a bit too strong for my liking. I would be too black and not leave me with much color to show the details I want.
Changed the color to Neutral grey and mixed in some matte aluminium. Dry brushed after for a more subtle look. Think this will work much better and oils / washes will make details pop more.

Brush painted the cockpit details and added some seatbelts for a bit of extra interest.
Doing this reminded me why i typically build 1/48 scale  ;)

Tried placing the cockpit 1€ to show the scale.

Exquisite work on the cockpit, I love your paint work!!

I'm too scared of weathering to build any Star Wars kits, it's the Micro Galaxy Squadron toys for me!

Awesome cockpit, and I love the weathering so far. This is a fun build to follow!

Y-Wing has been chipped and mostly detail painted. Really starting to come to life 😁

Did 2 rounds of chipping fluid for a brown and dark grey weathering.

For the details on the body of the y-Wing I went for a more colorful and artistic approach. Think it makes it a bit more interesting.

Next is some oils, panel line and fading 😄

Maybe adding a droid also.

And sorry for the Photoroom edit / watermark. I had trouble with the background so cheated a little and cut the model onto a white backdrop.

Love it... that's late-war Japanese level chipping! Nice color choices, too.

Thanks both of you  :)

Chipping is indeed a little heavy, but I hope it will be fitting for the diorama I'm planning down the road.
Still undecided if a Rebel base or maybe Tatooine / junkyard setting would be best. Saw some cool things for 3D printing that could be fun.

For now the base is just for final pictures.

I had fun building this kit, it was a nice break for getting ready for my next longer build  :D

To me the chipping is pure Original Trilogy, and for some reason those exposed pipes really appeal to me. Beautiful work all round Ben!

I agree with Zac, the exposed pipes really set it off.  Were these your own addition?

Simply wonderful all around. You've really captured the look IMHO. I hear these Bandai kits are pure joy at the bench.

Thanks Zac, Kensar and Warren  :)

The pipes are part of the kit, but I chose to give them a bit more color than you often see on Y-Wings. Think it gives some more visual interest than an all grey body.

And yes Bandai really made a great kit! Think I have to build another next time I need a break from a longer build  :)

Great build, and you gotta love that weathering. I agree wholeheartedly about the plumbing, it adds a lot of visual interest.

But you're still a Rebel and a traitor, though... :-D

Just noticed the RR Merlin valve covers... heh.

nice stuff. Maybe do a little discoloration at the bends in the copper to suggest heating?

Haha thanks Dave  ;)
Maybe a Empire build next time! I have the AT-AT and AT-ST that could be fun  ;D

Thanks Tony! Its fun to look for these "hidden" parts. There are also track links and what looks to be a engine deck from a tiger on the kit.
And good idea! I will add a bit once I start the final diorama for it  :)

Small update!

Finally got around to making a base for the Y-Wing.

Most of my builds had stalled due to kids and little bench time. However now that they are sleeping better I can finally start to catch up on my backlog of half finished projects  ;)

Wanted to make a Rebel outpost inspired setting.

Terrific! Looks like it could be a scene from one of the umpteen new Disney SW prequel/sequel series!

Thank you very much for the kind words all of you  :)

I will be finishing my Eduard Spitfire tonight (small side project).

Then i should hopefully be back to the WNW kit again soon!
