For a while I've been looking for something a little different to build. After some digging, Ive found the perfect plane to build. This specific airplane is a late World War One German floatplane design lisence-built by the Austro-Hungarian UFAG company. It likely flew with the k.u.k. Kriegsmarine, and was later photographed in service of the Hungarian Socialist Republic in 1919.
I'll be making a 1/72nd scale model of this machine using the Eastern Express Hansa-Brandenburg W.29. A lot of modifications will be done including scratchbuilding many interior components, making a new radiator, cowl panels and engine. Here is an inbox shot:

Some of the interior parts as well as the decals will de superfluous for this build.
The exact colors and pattern of the camoflauge of the machine I'm building aren't known, so I've chosen a plausible set of colors that look interesting together.

As mentioned, the main modifications will be of the fuselage. Here is a pair of before photos:

After day one, the cowlings, ejector pin marks and incorrect interior frames have been removed. I have also added spure goo to the inside of the turret the ejector pin marks levelled and the

Max - Looks like you're off to a great start! I've always loved this aircraft, and used to dream of the day there would be a proper kit of it... I bought a vacuform in 1:48 many years before the first "real" kit came out, but never had the nerve to start it! I'll look forward to following your build.

Max,
What an interesting idea. I really like the cammo you chose for the Hungarian version. Nice modifications to the interior. Following with interest.

Excellent start Max! I will follow along with interest!

Nice one, and in the right scale! A good start Max, I will follow with interest.

An excellent start with some great modifications, and in my favourite scale too :) I'll be watching along with this one.

What tool did you use to remove the stuff from the fuselage interior?

Great start Max!

Thanks for the comments, guys! :)
What tool did you use to remove the stuff from the fuselage interior?
I used a chisel blade to remove the majority of the stuff, then gave the areas a pass with some 1000 grit sanding sponge
-
The UFAG-built W.29s had a style of observers turret that was different to the german design. I've been filling and filing the area to get it to the correct shape. At this point it's almost to the correct shape. The last bit of sanding and shaping will happen once the fuselage is together.

I've also filled in the step on the outside of the fuselage, and sanded the interior bump away (after I took the photo, annoyingly). The interior bulkhead has also been removed, as shaping a part to fit the hole seems like a lot more work than just making a new bulkhead from styrene.

I've now opened a hole for the observers window

I've also begun adding bits to the interior. First, the framing and rear bulkhead
(https://onedrive.live.com/embed?resid=C19DAC194FDE1B63%211572&authkey=%21AHH7cxyOQ142L8c&width=1024&height=999999)

And then the front bulkhead, radio aerial support panel, control cable tubes and fuel/oil tank? I havent found much info on what the side boxes actually were.

Work progresses on the interior. I've built and installed the auxiliary fuel tank and observer's storage box.

I've preceeded to painting, starting with a layer of Mr Surfacer 1500 black:

Next, a good layer of Tamiya XF-64 Red Brown

Topped off by a streaked layer of burnt umber oil paint:

Thanks guys, although the woodgrain was a bit moot.
I forgot to paint the white upper part of the fuselage interior and, once I did, I wasn't happy with the woodgrain. To me it looked a bit too dark (the previous photos make it seem much lighter than it was), so I re-painted the wood parts using XF-59 Desert Yellow as the base. I have repeated the burnt umber oils and have set it aside to dry. I'll add a layer of X-26 clear orange when the oils cure.

I've re-made the control column out of spare bits of photoetch and 0.5mm wire and rod

Wow, some superb scratch built details. Very clever and impressive work!

Dedication, you have to love the work you're putting into this big seaplane. Or tiny seaplane, as the case may be... it's beautiful, in any case. I've always loved the Brandenburgs, I still have a 1:48 W.29 vacuform kit from the days long before there were any injection-molded options (and who ever dreamed, back then, of one in 1:32?) which I never had nerve to start.
Great job, Max.
Dave V.

Nice modeling here, and the scalpel blade gives an impression how tiny this is.

Thank you Tim, Richie, Dave and Andreas for the positive comments!
Now, the interior is starting to come together. Here's a quick shot of the auxiliary fuel tank and observer's locker
(https://onedrive.live.com/embed?resid=C19DAC194FDE1B63%211577&authkey=%21AGZpheSl6813dqI&width=1024)

I've installed the fuel tank, seat and control stick. The pipes are 0.5mm brass, the rest is copper wire of various diameters. The seat supports were painted XF-64 Red Brown, the rest of the pipes and controls XF-24 Dark Grey

That's a lot of detail for 1/72 scale. Nice work.

Really enjoying this thread. Great work, Max, even more impressive in 1:72. I'm still amazed at the idea of perching the pilot atop the fuel tank; why not just make him sit on a box filled with dynamite?
Probably had something to do with the center of gravity.
Dave V.
-
I can only echo others' comments: it's always shocking to remember this is 1/72! Bravo!
I'm still amazed at the idea of perching the pilot atop the fuel tank; why not just make him sit on a box filled with dynamite?
I didn't realise the Sopwith Snipe was the same until watching a video of Kermit Weeks showcasing his TVAL-build reproduction. That's some level of trust and confidence!
-
Zac, I actually remember that from my stalled build of the original CSM Snipe kit back around 2001. I scratchbuilt a lot of the interior but Eric provided a fairly usable white-metal fuel tank that fit under the seat (or, more appropriately, that the seat perched on top of!). Let's see, if one gallon of petrol has the explosive power of three sticks of dynamite, then...

Great looking interior work. This is shaping up very nicely.

Thanks, guys!
With the majority of the interior finished, I've moved on to the engine area. First up, making the engine bearers.
I'm using the GasPatch Schwarzlose guns and i'm making their mounts from 0.5mm brass pipe. The rear posts are removable for ease of painting, with the forward post glued directly the the bottom of the receiver.
Last up, the same XF-59 + burnt umber oils combo for the woodgrain.

Moving on to the engine.
First, removing the inlet exhausts and fiiling the void in the port engine half.

Once the pipe was in, I puttied around it and various other sinkholes to smooth out the parts.
