Hello again!
New model, my third CSM in a row when it comes to WWI-related stuff. This time it's the Sopwith Dolphin.
First some pictures of the contents... all of which look as good as I've come to expect.

There are some ejector marks that I think will be visible later, so they were sanded away.

Excellent PE-parts to enhance the cockpit and the radiators.

Looking very nice on the interior. That photo etch seat is pretty realistic looking.
-
Another masterpiece on the way Fredrik!
What are you using for the turnbuckle tubes?

I have to say I've never been a fan of the Dolphin but in your hands I'm excited to follow along with this build. It looks like a great kit and already you've made a terrific start!
-
Great stuff, Fredrik is on a roll with another project. I'm looking forward to seeing how this quirky little Sopwith comes together. Who am I kidding? I know it's going to be a masterpiece!
Richie
-
Thanks for your support guys!
Tim - for once I was quite pleased with the photoetch seat. It's probably quite enough down that pit.
Guy - Turnbuckle tubes are very short lengths cut from Albion Alloys 0.5 mm brass tube. I cheated in the beginning and used brass coloured ones, but then I pulled myself together and blackened them using a MIG burnishing liquid.
Zac - Not quite sure I'm that much of a fan either. Maybe this build will convert us?!
Richie - Thanks for your vote of confidence. No pressure then... :D
Slow progress the last week. I've been busy revising high school maths with my son, not quite my area of expertise...
I've been looking at what I've done so far and I need some input before I move on. In the picture below you can see the upper fuel tank behind the wood coloured board behind where the pilot's head will be. I'm wondering if that circular area actually is the metal end of the tank? It looks like it in this picture at the WNW site (which I can't seem to show directly here). Any ideas here?http://www.wingnutwings.com/ww/v98C7274C/www/products/model_kitsets/32073/archive_photos/Sopwith%20factory%20photograph%20showing%20interior%20detail%20(138).jpg (http://www.wingnutwings.com/ww/v98C7274C/www/products/model_kitsets/32073/archive_photos/Sopwith%20factory%20photograph%20showing%20interior%20detail%20(138).jpg)

Hi Fredrik, it looks very like the end of the fuel tank. In the WNW site photo there are little recesses cut in the wooden surround at the top and bottom. The oval shape has a protruding lip round the edge which to me suggests a welded and riveted metal join at the edge.
Richie

Quite a nice level of detail for a 1/48 kit. You're pulling it off, too!
-
Your construction, details, and painting are looking Fantastic Fredrik! After looking at the photo I went through the WNW directions to see what they recommended as for color. The Only reference I found in the instructions was a line pointing to the back saying it was the fuel tank and the color call out was Battleship Grey. Pretty vague for WNW.

Good to see that you support my hunch, Richie, and with fancy words like 'protruding lip' as well. 😄
Thanks Ken! There's some more detailing on the way...
Strange isn't it, Rick?! There's actually no painting reference at all for the front side in the WNW instructions.
But, all in all I think I'll go for metal instead of wood. There doesn't seem to be a point in having that recess if both areas were wood anyway.

I just checked My build log of the WNW kit. It seems I chose to do mine like you are planning:

I didn't read My log but someone must have given Me that suggestion ::)

Nice looking Dolphin, Rick!
I changed to Dark Battleship Grey instead and added some piping to the cockpit area. I can now paint the instrument panel and fix some other things, but will then have to wait until I get my new machine guns and some instrument decals. Yes, I have cheated in the areas that aren't visible later and I see that I've lost the handle on the synchronisation pump.

Good choice on the color for the tank end Fredrik! Looking sharp !

I like the very sensible idea of cheating in areas that won't be visible later. The visible parts of the interior look great, the photo etch wicker seat works well in 1/48. Hope the guns and instrument decals turn up soon.

Nice work on the interior!

Thanks for the encouragement, Rick, Richie and Przemo.
Maths, physics and other stuff out the way and my own work winding down as we are approaching the end of the school year here in Sweden. Less work means more time for building models and some things have happened with the Dolphin.
There's a premium boxing available in which there is chequered machine as one build option. I don't have that boxing so I decided to paint the missing elements. In hindsight I should have spent a bit more time and effort getting the dimensions perfect. But I'll live with it this time. So below you see three stages of painting squares...

There are no pictures, but there's colour on the fuselage and wings and the painting of the markings is underway.

The Checkerboard Markings came out Great! Awesome work!

Nice work on a difficult masking project.
-
Very nice detailing in the interior (it's a shame it will be hard to see) and you're off to a nice start on the exterior.
-
Thanks Rick, Tim and Ken!
Normally I would have started again on the chequerboard, given that the rows and columns aren't very consistent. But the more I look at it, the less it bothers me and not redoing it might be the sane thing to do...
Ken, you're absolutely right about the interior. I just hope that some of it will be visible through that opening in the top wing.
And on the subject of non-visible items... I might have bought the resin engine from CSM for this kit, although I'm planning to close the cowling... probably not the sane thing to do. ::)
Some more progress... engine parts, engine installed and then hidden...

All markings painted and ready for some rib detail to be added.

The interior looks terrific as does the paining and markings! Very Well done Fredrik!

I think the chequerboard pattern looks fine, definitely worth keeping and preserving your sanity.
The engine looks lovely, possibly hiding it isn't the most sane option but then not making the details you enjoy making whether they will be seen or not is even less sane in my opinion.
Your painted markings look superb, definitely you are in full possession of your sanity! :)

That is just beautiful! Nice work.
-
Great colour scheme, the checkerboard looks so appealing.
-
Good work there.
You may consider an adjustment to the checkerboard pattern by masking the last row to the same width as the other rows and then painting green to 'shorten' the last row of checkers.
On the engine, I sometimes work on an engine just to see what I can do with it, even if it just gets covered up later. Good practice.

Ken, that could be an idea. However, according to CSM's profile of this aircraft, the last row should be longer... That doesn't necessarily mean that it's correct, but good enough for me this time. Also, thanks for making me feel good about hiding the engine. 😀 And thank you, everyone else, for your support.

So, small steps forward...
I started this model with the intention not to buy after market details and to make it a quick build. Then I tried to drill out the Vickers guns, botched it and thought 'Why not buy nice new ones from Gaspatch?'. They arrived and it turned out that there was a slight difference in size between the CSM and Gaspatch versions...
So, back to rescuing the original machine guns using different drill bits and brass tubing.
Some slight shading added to the wings and fuselage. Now a few days off and then pre rigging, I suppose.

And here's a small hint towards my next project...

Take care!

That’s quite a size difference between the Gaspatch and the CSM Vickers guns.
I’d guess your next project is an RE.8?
-
Excellent save on the CSM Vickers! I have noticed that sometimes the 1/32nd scale versions can't be easily used in some aircraft! The Model is really taking shape now and I look forward to the next update!

Yes, quite difficult to see them as the same scale. I don't know which is more correct, but it's clear that the kit is engineered around the smaller guns included.
And you are of course correct, Tim! There's an R.E.8 on the horizon.

Great save on the Vickers, that's some impressive micro surgery to rescue it.
I love that RE8 cowling, it's beautifully precise. Are you going to be scratch building the whole thing?

Nice work -I've always liked the Dolphin!
-
Hei, what great work! I started the original Copper State Dolphin back in the early 2000s, which still occupies a place on my Shelf of Doom. I put about twenty or thirty hours in on it, but it was nowhere near as beautiful as this one.

Fine progress. Looking forward to the final stages and... to that RE.8
