Title: 1/32 Roden Spad XIII early
Post by: DaveB on April 13, 2023, 04:06:41 AM
Dear all,

My latest finished project - Roden's Spad XIII kit.

A good kit although I was surprised by the heavy seems, some flash and sinks marks for a new tooled kit.   It went together reasonably well but I found this one quite a demanding build.  It was certainly an enjoyable though!

Pleased with the outcome although I would have liked to have made the rigging a bit neater.  Built mostly OOB with some minor additions as follows:

seat cushion made from Milliput;
seat harness from a spare Eduard French seat belt PE part;
Filed off the port side panel not appropriate for the early version;
enhanced the look of the kit Vickers MG's;
Scratch built windscreen as this part was missing from my kit

RAGIII's build of this kit was a great source of information for my build so thanks Rick!

Completed in the Italian markings of 91a Squadriglia flown by Capt. Fulco Ruffo di Calabria, Italy, Summer 1918.

Well built, Dave. Worth the effort to tackle the Roden kit and come up with a lovely looking model.
Cheers,
Gary

Well done Dave. I find Spads very difficult to model. You have definitely tamed this one!

I'm with Tim on this one. Twin bays are tough and you've done a great job.

That looks first class Dave. The Italian markings really add some colour to the model and the rigging is just outstanding. Looking forward to seeing this one soon.

Stephen.

Great build and paint job!
There are so many colourful aircraft from WWI, but this is so differently colourful and different is good!

It  might have been a demanding kit but it certainly looks to have received your full attention. That's a beautiful model Dave. I can't see anything wrong with the rigging, I'd be chuffed with that result!

Rick - I beg to differ mate - your work is brilliant and your build log on this one was really helpful and a great guide - I would never have known (for example) that the panel on the port side fuselage was incorrect for this variant.
