Title: DSPIAE Sanding Pen
Post by: gedmundson on April 01, 2023, 08:24:46 AM
Not seen this mentioned here, but I've just had a chance to try out a new tool after ordering it from Maple Airbrush Supplies in Edmonton, Alberta. For years I've tried to use a Dremel Moto-Tool 395 for grinding plastic and resin parts. The speed and power of it, not to mention the weight, was a bit tricky and one small slip could result in major damage to model and/or fingers.

This small "Sanding Pen" by DSPIAE is a wonderful tool for such delicate work. I've tried it on resin and plastic figures just now, and the gentle control offered is just what I was looking for. Re-chargeable and light weight, I wished I had this tool for the last few years. The photo shows the tool with a set of grinding bit which I bought separately.

Cheers,
Gary

It looks like a very nice tool so I just ordered one. To expand its usefulness for drilling holes for rigging, I also bought a keyless chuck adapter with a matching 3mm shaft to fit this tool. https://www.ebay.com/itm/275152218425?_trkparms=amclksrc%3DITM%26aid%3D777008%26algo%3DPERSONAL.TOPIC%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20220705100511%26meid%3D25a9a2f08e874028849ab268c441a627%26pid%3D101524%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D1%26itm%3D275152218425%26pmt%3D0%26noa%3D1%26pg%3D2380057%26algv%3DRecentlyViewedItemsV2%26brand%3DUnbranded&_trksid=p2380057.c101524.m146925&_trkparms=pageci%3A184d369c-d039-11ed-95fa-22da6e21ce41%7Cparentrq%3A3ac0a2211870a2a559ac453efffc89d0%7Ciid%3A1

This looks perfect, I've wanted something like this for ages. Thanks for the heads up, I will order one immediately and that neat kittle chuck Berman recommended.

Gary,

What a star, I’ve been looking for a drill that can rotate at really low speeds forever, the usual suspects melt the plastic.

Just bought one from the Scale Model Shop in the UK  ;)

I got the adapter shank from Amazon in the UK too.

Thanks!

Guy

Here in Austria there has been a decision made that Alixepress can not send to Austria unless there is an appointed agent to handle the packages. (that's not going to happen as Alliexpress dealers often aren't huge concerns) This is probably EU. illegal. Bloody bureacracy here in Austria is chronic and they really don't like free trade and do like to invent jobs that make money with without producing anything, The brits do that quite well too with the Fines for everything or post slapping on excess charges for no good reason. Rant over but still well Pi**ed off!!

Andrew, open a Shop and Ship account. The seller will mail it to the depot in England and the courrier will deliver to you, just as Amazon or DHL will do. They will also collect any duties or taxes due.

OK, I tried to find a DSPIAE sanding pen, and came up empty handed. HOWEVER, it is listed on the DSPIAE site as a "sharpening pen".  ;D  They've got it listed as a sharpening pen, but label it as a sanding pen. Crafty fellows, very trixie Hobbitses.

I've got a low-speed Dremel which I love, but I'd like something smaller, and this is it.

Thanks for making me/us aware Gary, and thanks to Berman for posting that chuck too.

Warren

PS: I've found that while most DSPIAE products are expensive, they are worth it. You get what you pay for. Your madness may vary.

Hi Ian
Thanks for that but it seems they don't ship to Austria. Some of the other forwarding companies seem to have appalling feedback ratings. I'll keep looking but I think it's down to family ysending it on from blighty and paying double customs!!

Very cool Gary. Good find. A quick use tool like this does trump my dremel/flex etc.

Found one on eBay and I am watching it. I‘ll order one if you all write here how amazing and indispensable it is in practice and that you use it every day  :)

Mine just arrived,

I have to say I’m very impressed, the quality is right up there and it’s very slim and easy to handle. 3 speed settings and very quiet, perfect for drilling those rigging holes without melting the plastic!

Thumbs up from me.

Got mine today too and have used it to make a piece from styrene. It's fantastic, the supplied grinding head is a little fierce for styrene but with care it works really well. Have also tried it on tough acetate, basswood and sprue with good results. Thanks for a great recommendation Gary. It's just what I was looking for.

There are also adhesive backed sanding discs that go on a shaft/disc you can buy. Two sizes 5mm and 10mm. A pack comes with 96 5mm or 24 10mm
400-1000 grit.

Thanks Steve, I'll have a look. I'm loving the sanding pen, I have a selection of burs that fit it perfectly. I used to spend forever using them in a pin vice, no more!

Mine is still on the way. So you can do fairly tight detail work with it? There's not too much wobble?
I was just hoping for something less cumbersome than my Dremel/flexshaft set up

No wobble at all that I have noticed, that changes when I use the adaptor chuck I ordered. I did some (for me) very tight fettling with it yesterday that needed good accuracy and it was fine. I had a little play using it as a mini lathe with 3mm styrene rod, this was great too. Again the story changes with the cheap adaptor chuck I have, possibly me not getting the part centred properly in the jaws. I think you will be very pleased with it.

Andreas, this tool is one of the best things to come along since sliced bread. I’m very impressed with it and honestly wish I’d had it a long time ago. I sit at my modelling bench a lot and since obtaining this tool, have used it quite a bit. I can’t recommend it enough.
Cheers,
Gary

Thank you Gary!
I’ve been already convinced and am waiting for my pen to arrive from China via eBay.  :)
A friend of mine has some other tools from the same brand. They all seem to be well made and worth a try.

Dispiae does make good stuff. I have their circle cutter and it performs perfectly. Not inexpensive but well worth the price. They have other tools that I'm not sure of their practicality but appear to be well made as well.

Mine works great, but likewise, I do get some ‘wobble’ with my cheap adapter.

I’s there a better quality one out there?

OK, I ordered one through evil-bay, and wouldn't you know it . . . the seller absconded with my money. I got a refund, but now I have to find another one. :(

This adapter would be more accurate than the Jacobs chuck adapter as it is like a pin vise. The problem is the shaft measures 3.17mm
(1/8th inch) whereas the DSPIAE tool only accepts a 3mm size shaft. Therefore, the shaft would need to be precisely turned down on a lathe. More information here.  https://www.ebay.com/itm/403394348671?_trkparms=amclksrc%3DITM%26aid%3D777008%26algo%3DPERSONAL.TOPIC%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20220705100511%26meid%3D257c15717aef4a85b7b8f28c97485792%26pid%3D101524%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D1%26itm%3D403394348671%26pmt%3D0%26noa%3D1%26pg%3D2380057%26algv%3DRecentlyViewedItemsV2&_trksid=p2380057.c101524.m146925&_trkparms=pageci%3A9d43dd99-ec2c-11ed-a9a6-26b6e16da952%7Cparentrq%3Af1ef0b2a1870a60c035fb589fffeb508%7Ciid%3A1
Note: The problem with the cheap Jacobs chuck drill adapter is that the shaft is not really 3mm. It is slightly undersize which causes the wobble.

I got mine from the same retailer as did Gary, and it is a very nice tool. The only shortfall I can see is the 3.0 mm shank requirement; I have a huge inventory of Dremel accessories with 1/8 inch shanks on hand that can't be "chucked' in the tool. I'm hoping someone comes up with a source for an adjustable chuck that will solve that problem. For now I'm limited to the basic bit set made by DSPIAE which are also excellent products.
Cheers,
Lance

As an alternative solution, .17mm is .0067 inch. That is barely more than the thickness of regular paper. The DSPIAE could be easily drilled out to .125 (1/8th) inch. Or would a .125 inch reamer produce a better result?
