Hello everyone,
After a short excursion to the cars (Benz Motor Patentwagen 1886), I would like you to join me while builing the DFW C.V (mid Production) from WnW. My first "real time" building log in this beautiful forum. I'm not the fastest builder, so (quote Alexis) please don't get pushy with me. ;)
I have decided to build the liver coloured version of this aircraft. Even if there isn't evidence from pictures, this colour scheme has been documented in an historic source. WnW made a proposed ist and I simply like the colour ;)

So, while deciding about the exact version I already started with the most important part of the aircraft... not.
12.5kg PuW Bombs

Next I built the fuel tank / pilot's seat. For colouring WnW suggests either brass or light gray. I decided for some kind of aged brass. As I found out later, there exist some cockpit pictures (including the fuel tank) from the last remaining DFW C.V in Krakow/Poland. You can find the via following link: http://www.wwi-models.org/app/sbj/srch/Macn.php?action=uArchList&subjId=103 (http://www.wwi-models.org/app/sbj/srch/Macn.php?action=uArchList&subjId=103). You have to click on the "C.17077/17" in the upper left corner to get to the pictures. There you will find a rather black fuel tank, maybe with a light (brass?) shimmer.
So now, this is my fuel tank. "Primed" black with Vallejo air black, dry brushed with old dried up brass colour (Mr Metal Color).

Cussions were painted with Tamiya XF-52

For the first time the leather effect was not done by oils but with acrylic paints (burnt umber + black). I just wanted to try it out and it worked fine for me. So only a short drying time. The knobs were additionally highlighted with a mixture from burnt umber and white. Last steps were clear glossy varnish from clear orange (6 drops) / clear blue (3 drops) / black X1 (1 drop). Afterwards a clear satin varnish coat.
Here the result so far (dry fit):

Outstanding start Rafael! The leather on the seat is Beautiful!

WOW!

Good start!
And you leather looks like ... leather.
So you don't need to wait for the hardening of the oils, which is a nice turbo. Sometimes I hate the quick drying of the acryls, as the oils gives you more time and tries for rework.
Cheers,
Frank

That's very nice paintwork indeed, Rafael
-
That seat is amazing. Great start, looking forward to see more.
-
Excellent work Rafael, and I agree that colour scheme does have a certain appeal.
-
Thank you very much for your kind comments! :)

Fine looking tank and chair. It's one thing to be in a plane with a fuel tank. But to sit on top of it???
-
Tagging along on this one , looking fab so far !

I remember watching one of Kermit Weeks' "Kermie Cam" videos on YouTube (I think it was about his TVAL-built Snipe), where he showed the filler cap for a fuel tank was under the pilot's cushion!!

Needs a cup holder and a TV remote.
Nice work.

Thank you very much!
Needs a cup holder and a TV remote.
That is indeed a good idea. You could even use the tank for some special fuel... e.g. beer. Drinking straw, Netflix, life can be soooo easy ;D
-
That looks very comfortable :)
Kidding aside, again you have managed to create great and crisp detail Rafael.
The painting is superb!

Simply great eye for the detail, Rafael. The DFW builds up wonderfully, it’s one of my most favorite kits from WNW. I am keen on seeing your skills on it.

Thanks Willem and Andreas!
Hello everyone,
a small update from my side. I started with some wood. Basically parts were airbrushed with Tamiya XF-57 "Buff". Afterwards treatment with aquarell pen (Van-Dyck-Brown) and a wet brush. For the wood color I chose a varnish from clear orange (12 drops) and black X1 (1 drop). Darker parts received more varnish. In the last step I coated with clear matt varnish.

Same for other wood parts. Here comes the dashboard.

Impressive details on the parts - and impressive paint of those details :o
If you continue that way this will be a great model!
Cheers,

Beautiful work, especially the wood grain! I will have to try to get some of those pens and remember to try the clear orange and black mix!

Staggeringly beautiful work! Just like the real thing!

Hi Rafael,
great start so far, can only echo what the others have said already. Looking forward for your build!
Best,

Thanks to all of you for your kind words :)

Exceptional work Rafael! I love the wood, lots of depth and character. I would be vey interested to hear how you use those water colour pencils to achieve that wood effect. The metal also has an interesting effect, what did you use?
On a side note I was intrigued by your first post re Benz Patent-Motorwagen 1886. I expect this is the fantastic ICM 1/24 kit. I'm now at risk of being deviated from WW1 aircraft >:( But I'll try to hold in the reins. Though there is a nice build at https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235068197-benz-patent-motorwagen-1886/ (https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235068197-benz-patent-motorwagen-1886/)
Apologies for unintended highjack! Though I expect the Motorwagon is a stunner from what I see here...
Great build and following with interest as I have the WnW DFW C.V Late Production in the stash.

Hi Gutzer, thank you very much for your comment.
I will show in one of the next posts with another peace of wood how it works with water pencils.
Honestly I don't know, which metal parts you mean.
- The belt containers were airbrushed black (Vallejo air 71.057). Afterwards I made a dry brush with Mr Metal Color Alminume (218). However, the color was already dry in the vessel. That makes life easier. ;)
- Quite the same with the fuel tank. Airbrushed in black and drybrushed with Mr Metal Color brass (219), also dry in the vessel.
- The hinge of the flap has been painted with a brush. I used a mixture of Vallejo air gun metal (71.072) and Vallejo air black (71.057). Typically a drop of each and mix it for the desired darkness. Very easy to use with a small paint brush. The same I used for the foot "bowls". I don't know the correct name, sorry.
- For small nails in the wood I used a very soft 9B pencil, which is in fact pure graphite.
Regarding the Benz Patent Motorwagen 1886. Yes, you are right, that is the ICM kit 24040. I made a (German) build log https://community.revell.de/viewtopic.php?t=9243 (https://community.revell.de/viewtopic.php?t=9243). If there are questions regarding details, please ask/PN me. So why don't deviate from aircrafts for some weeks ;). I built it within 3 months and it was a lot of fun.
Best whishes for your DFW C.V late :D
Kind Regards
Rafael

Hello Rafael,
Very nice and very cleanly cockpit built.
I find the color tones very successful.

Rafael,
Beautiful work. I wonder if I can achieve the same effect with water color pencils rather than the pens?
I'm looking forward to your post on how you did this.

Hi Rafael, I have a similar doubt to what WD has written: did you use Waterbrush pens or watercolor pencils?
I have the pencils but when I tried to use them, but when I use the brush to lay the orange varnish, it tends to smudge or even remove the (VanDyck) Brown marks
Maybe with airbrush this don't happen!
Thanks for sharing and congratulations for the wonfderful work!

I like how you have used different wood tones to give the impression of different pieces of wood - the hatch door, as an example. And making the woodgrain run different directions on different parts. 8)

Thank you all for your kind words. Unfortunately in the last weeks I had no time for modelling. Hopefully I can return to the work bench soon.

I think, in English they are called "water color pencils". For the van-Dyck-Brown I use the Faber Castell - Albrecht Dürer - van-Dyck-Brown 8200-176. Here are some sources:

After painting I use the airbrush to apply the orange/brown varnish. With the brush you would most likely reactivate the water color pencil.
Maybe I make a little tutorial on a spare part, about how it works for me. But please give me a few days.
Best regards
Rafael

Thank you Rafael, I am pretty sure the smudge is caused by the friction of the brush on the colours and as you said the wet varish reactivates the watercolor characteristics.
I don't have an airbrush and I have no plan to buy one for many reasons, and I think that after the watercolor pencils are applied I could spray some matte warnish to protect them and then over paint the orange varnish with the brush...
-
My wife is heavily into colouring and has an amazing array of pencils - I'm certain she has some shades that will help me emulate this!
-
Very nice work!!
