Hi all,
as my Pfalz D.XII is done, I started another WnW build. This one will be my first Grossfluzeug. I plan to test new turnbuckles, which will be released by my friend during next year spring. I like the size (approx 20% larger, than Gaspatch 48) and it's not as brittle as G. resin ones.
Marking D or E will be used. I started with cockpit. Wood was painted using oil paints over Gunze base (C44).

Outstanding start! The weathered wood graining looks awesome!!

Thanks!
As I'm lazy to document my progress, some photos after some time...
-
With cockpit ready, I started to prepare fuselage.

Great plane, great kit, great build! Looking forward to following your build!
-
Your cockpit work looks really good. I like how the wood grain came out.
-
That wood is fantastic. Especially the contrast between the wear areas. Very nice.

Outstanding progress and results!

Exquisite work on the cockpit, Martin!
-
Wonderful out come with the weathered wood effect .
Alexis

Great start, you made a very convincing woodgraining and a neat cockpit.

Large one! Good looking start!

Thanks for all comments!
As there was a lot of sanding and surface tunning, I didn't post any update for some while.
-
Your Gotha is coming along nicely for sure. It looks like your sanding paid off!
RAGIII

Lovely! I see you went the same way as I did - first lower wing to the fuselage, unlike the WNW instructuions which sugget assembling the wings cellule first. Good luck with the rest of the build.
-
Thanks RAG and Przemo!
I didn't glue it yet. I have to weather whole fuselage and tail surfaces and prepare all stuff on wings, then I will think about assembly order. Is it better to assemble it your way?
I sanded decals to hide carrier film.
-
Nice work on the decal film!
RAGIII

I hated that toy-like outfit! :)

I doubted my skills to follow the sequence from the instructions. So I thought out that "my" way and it worked perfectly for me. You can see the progress steps in my build thread starting from here:

And BTW, very fine weathering effects on your G.I !!!
-
Well, at least this wonderful build is no mess at all ;)
Andreas
-
Thanks, Przemo, I checked it out, I'm still not decided yet.
I was afraid of bright front fuselage, unsure how to weather it. I started with some dirt and small scratches.
-
1) that amount of weathering looks perfect to my eye...even though my knowledge of the type is totally limited to the builds I've seen on this forum!
b) at first I misread the noseart and thought the aircraft was named for a certain style of hat!!! ;D
-
Your Gotha looks excellent. I Like the subdued weathering!

Fab stuff !

As I was lazy to update again, I post some longer-time update. Wings were weathered using oil paints (wash, dots etc), I started to work on engines. I modified valve mechanisms heavily to be more realistic using Taurus springs and some profiles. Rods will be added later to not to bend them during bulding process. Cylinders were weathered using AK stuff and oil paints. One engine has spark plugs installed and connected. Ignition cabling was scratched too.

... and engine. Monofilament was used as wire as it behaves and looks quite similar to real-life wiring. Taurus spark plugs.
-
Fine work mess, it looks great!
-
Martin, that is gorgeous work on all your subassemblies. I love it
Harry
-
Very nice work! Love the weathering.
-
Many thanks!
Two Benz Bz.III engines are getting ready to be installed. Engine covers have to be weathered.
I scratched cooling piping to water pump.
-
The last foto shows everything dry-fits well. :)
-
Martin, those engines are exquisite! Please forgive me if you've covered it already: how did you paint your exhausts? I'd love to be able to replicate that finish!
-
Looking great and I agree with Zac about the engines! I love your counterbalance weight while mounting the wing 8)
RAGIII
-
Thanks! Exhaust were painted with some GSI Super metallic (Stainless steel I think) and then I applied pigments (Dark rust and umbra). The last step was van Dyck brown oil paint thinned with white spirit to simulate some shadows in corners.

Those engines look great Martin (as is the whole model so far)!
Thanks for sharing the paint procedure.

Hear hear. Thank you very much, Martin! I'm not familiar with all those products so I'll do some research.

Hi Mess,
This is great work.
I have the Goths in my stash - I must start it one day,

Fine progress. And I am glad for you, that you found the good fit of the wing cellule.

That is some very impressive work Mess .

Hi,
I agree, it's really gorgeous. An eyes' pleasure.
Best regards.
Alain.

Thanks for kind words to everyone.
Contiuing with rigging. Pretty tough job as resin turnbuckles and eyelets tend to crack. One side finished, now the other one.

Props...

Your rigging is looking awesome!

Great work, mess - love those propellers!

Hi mates,
I like it ! Just awesome. I hope to built mine as well.
Best regards.

Hi Martin! In the first rigging-picture I can make out some thin line spooled on a sprue frame..is that elastic wire or simply monofilament? do you do that to pre-stretch it somehow or simply to keep it tidy?
cheers
Mathias
By the way, your G I is one of the best I've seen by now!

Hi Mathias, it's .1 mono, I use this sprue solution to paint it with GSI Supermetallic iron. I used Uschi's elastic on some previous kits but I found it too thin and flat in shape.
