I'm continuing to push forward with the shelf of doom projects. I am down to three. I have an Eduard Albatros D.V that only needs rigging, a Hanriot HD.9 that was crushed and needs all new undercarriage, struts, and rigging, then this Voisin III. The Voisin will definitely be the most challenging kit I've ever done. It was placed on the shelf those many years ago after trying to remove the photo etch tail boom structure off the fret and turning it into a mangled mess. Anyways, here's where we're starting. I am going to move forward and see if I can make something that resembles a Voisin.

Good luck with the Voisin Stuart, I have this kit and it seems to be a good one.
Are you sure you have a Hanriot HD.9? I don't know that such a kit exists, is it a converted HD.3 or a scratch build?
-
I am so impressed with you working away to rescue these models... I would've given up and buried them a long time ago! Great effort!

If it helps, I scratch built one of these many years ago - it is in the scratch builds section of this site. I used florists wire for the booms - that might give you some ideas as to how you could retrieve this one. https://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=8349.0
Good on you for picking it up again and restarting - I will be following along and willing you on.
Stephen.

Stephen,
I actually took a bit of inspiration from your Voisin scratchbuild to get the shelf of doom cleared. I figured I'd try to regain some skills as I worked my way through most of them before I delved into the Flashback kit. Honestly, I should probably put it back on the shelf and continue improving skills on a few others, but it'll come out however it comes out and it too shall be completed. It's a hobby after all, right?
You did an amazing job on yours. Mine won't come close. I'm hoping it mostly looks like a Voisin. We will see.

You are moving too quickly for me to keep up with Stuart. That being said I like the tub, looks awesome.

Rejuvenating the PE boom structure is not out of the question. A while back I had a 1/700 ship with a complex PE lattice mast of very, very soft brass, and I messed it up bad. After ten years or so on the Shelf of Doom, I revisited it, just as you are doing, and it came out really nice.
I wish you similar luck!

I'm pretty sure I used the Roseplane Hd.3 vacuform. I added the camera access panels, rocker covers, headrest, and filler. The rest is straight kit. What I can't figure out is what I did to make it a single seater. It's too clean for me to have fared over the gunner's position. Maybe it came that way and one was supposed to carve it out. I just don't remember. Maybe someone else has this kit and can elaborate. Here's a pic of its current state.

I think you are underestimating your skills Stuart...
Here is the original Roseplane HD.3 vacuform with the gunner position clearly evident and general instructions on how to convert it to an HD.9.
-
Thank you. Seeing the kit reminds me I used stretched sprue and putty to simulate the stringers on the fuselage and the ribs on the wings, elevator, and rudder. I must have blocked out that arduous task from my memory.
Stuart
-
Stuart,
I've had one of these kits in the stash for years, but I've been too scared to start it for fear of screwing it up. Looking forward to see what you do with this build.

Some amazing modelling on a really difficult subject, Stuart! Watching and learning... Regards, Marc.

Progress continues. I was going through the photo library to organize pictures of models and I came across the first one below dated from September 2018. So this one has only been on the shelf of doom for 3 years. It's still fresh! By the looks of it, I must have been planning on replacing the molded interior detail but then forgot along the way and closed up the fuselage. I painted the floor in a wood-ish looking motiff best I could without disassembly. I found a photo etch set by RCR Models for the Savoia Marchetti S-55X. Since it's the only photo etch set for a subject post 1918 I have, I must have gotten it for nearly free and bought it for such a purpose as this. I chopped it up and used some of the bits to make the side framing and rigged it with Infini lycra. It's definitely not correct, but it looks the part. I slid them both in without disturbing the other interior components. Looking at the datafile, there's a bunch of controls and small gauges along the sides of the cockpit and very few on the instrument panel. Take a look at Stephen's scratch build for the proper panel. Adding the side details would make the kit a real stunner, but I'm just not feeling it on this build. I will have to repent to the modeling gods. Usually I just say 10 'Hail Airfixes' for any modeling sins but this may require more penance. I'm now in the puttying and sanding stages to get it smoothed out.

I'm going to try some pre-shading for the ribs. I laid down a coat of white primer and hand painted with brown primer. It looks awful! Let's see what happens.

The first picture is a shot of some of the sub assemblies in the kit. I started straightening the rear boom photo etch. I really mangled it up on the first attempt. The gun is very nice and for the number of very small photo etch parts, it went together easier than I thought it would. The wheels were simple and went together easily as well. The engine was a challenge. The cylinders are resin on a plastic crankcase with a photo etch pushrod plate. It looks like I lost one since last I worked on it. I still have to add the photo etch rocker arms and valves to each of the cylinders. The second picture is of the result of pre-shading. This is the first time I've tried this and was quite pleased it came out the way it did. I have a bit of touch up on the elevator. I got a bit too anxious and laid a whopper of a fingerprint in it. Nothing a little sanding and spraying can't fix.

It looks like you are well on your way to getting the booms straight Stuart. As for the pre shading of the ribs , they look fantastic!
RAGIII
-
A bit more tweaking of those booms and they will serve well.
The pres-hading has worked very well indeed. Looks like this one is going to be on your display shelf before too long.
Stephen.
-
Stephen, thank you. For me, it's always a surprise and a big motivator when I try something new and it works. I had some time over the Christmas weekend. I have another day to make some progress, then it may slow down. I've sketched up plans for a new hobby bench with shelving, so I may pack everything up and go into construction mode before I finish it. Here's some more pictures. I had to hack, slice, sand, and trim to get the figures the way I wanted, especially the pilot.

She's looking great Stuart! Pre-shading for ribs always seems to me a hit-and-miss affair but yours look great to my eye! The whole project is shaping up very nicely.

As others have said, it's looking great and you're well on your way. I like it that you've added a pilot and crew, what figures did you use?
WD

Looking good Stuart. I Like how you have posed the figures. They should be a nice enhancement!

Certainly beginning to look more like a Voisin now. You are well on the way to finishing this one.
Stephen

Great work and the figures will really add to the interest. I hope you finish this before you rebuild your work place, otherwise it might be another three years before it gets done... hope not!

Keeping the flow going. Thanks again to everyone looking in on my progress. WD, they are PJ Productions figures. They are quite nice. I bought them a number of years ago and they were more than I wanted to spend on 1/72nd figures even back then. I think it was more due to the USD low against the pound sterling at the time as PJP is in Belgium and the only way I could get them was through Hannants. They may be available here in the US now, I don't know. I bought a big bunch of them at the time to justify the shipping and am still working from that lot.

Hear hear, that lattice tail looks great to my eye!
-
Your figures look really good. Hard to believe they are 1/72 scale.
-
Wow. If you every want to learn just where your modeling skills are at, take super closeups of your work. Thank you kensar for the crew compliment, but it looks like I need to touch up the crew. With the naked eye, I didn't realize I had banged them up so much getting them in. The gun mount got overglued and the radiator cores have a bit of overpaint from the crossmembers. And I thought I had nailed those radiators! I can still touch them up mounted. The gun is going to stay the way it is. I am not going to tear apart all that photo etch. I'll try to clean up the overglue on the tripod mount points. If I can't, a bit of paint might make them look like flanged mounts. I still have to go back in and trim off the side grips on the control stick as this seems to be inaccurate and then get the stick in the pilot's hands.
Stephen and Zac, the tail is still wonky, but a first glance it looks okay. Let's see if the dang thing will go on straight.

The gun and mount look great in place. I think the vrew looks good even with the closeup photo. Should be perfect for the scale once you do your touch up.

Keep at it Stuart - you are surely winning!

Slow and steady , and the battle will be won . really nice work so far and I ope you were able to straighten out the tail booms

If you hadn't have pointed out the faults, I wouldn't have seen them, and I still can't see the overpaint on the radiators.
WD

Precisely what I thought!
-
I decided to work over the photo etch tail boom. I gave the struts and spars some depth with layers of CA glue. This gave the whole thing a lot more rigidity. With a bit more structural integrity, andi with the rigging portions of it bending and bowing, I cut them out and will replace them with scale appropriate lycra thread.
I'm starting the rigging after several sessions of studying the instructions, datafile drawing, and images. The rigging under the wings presents a new challenge for me especially working in how to do it with all the usual rigging. I think I have a good plan and have started moving along.

The boom is looking good Stuart. I think replacing the PE bracing wires was/is a good decision!

Nice work on the booms , PE to straighten out can be pain so I tip my hat .
Alexis

What Rick and Alexis said!
WD
-
Underwing rigging? And I thought the PE lattice was mindbending! Lovely work Stuart.
-
I had emotions and had to step away for a few days. After I got all the underwing rigging in place, I mounted the struts in the top wing and tried to get it attached to the lower wing. I didn't even get close to getting it on when I noticed the top and bottom placement holes did not line up. I had counted ribs. Somehow I got off. I think it's because the rib count distance on the top wing and the rib count distance on the bottom wing don't line up when referencing the datafile. So, I filled, redrilled, and re-rigged. As I was mounting the top wing it turns out the kit interplane struts are all too short. Great. I really didn't want to have to make struts for another kit. So at this point, I decided it was a good time to pause and take inventory of all my model kits and decals. That was a nice little distraction and today I hunkered back down and made struts for the Voisin. The top wing is now mounted and I can measure the outboard diagonal struts and get those in. As you can see, the mounting process was not without some pain. I have to remount a radiator and the gun. And of course more touch ups. Minor stuff. Getting back on track to get this completed.

Wow, Stuart! A magnum opus and you are marching through this one with great gusto! Just to say there will be times when this complicated model really tries your patience, but it will be worth it in the end! And we will all be following... Regards, Marc
-
Wow, Stuart, your recovery work was so well done I can't even tell there was a problem in the first place. It looks remarkable!
I had emotions and had to step away for a few days.
I totally empathise. Although in my case the troublemakers are still in their boxes after a matter of years rather than a few days!!
-
Stuart this is not the easiest of aircraft to model - the rigging under the wings is a pain in and of itself. However you did the right thing to go away and come back - and it is really paying off now. Just a word of advice - take adding the booms slowly and give yourself plenty of time - they will fit but they are a bit like the wings...
This will be something to be proud of when it is finished.
Stephen.
-
This model is testing my patience. I'm quickly running out of talent. I had to take an extended break after mangling the engine trying to get it installed. I did a small side project, the CMR Hansa-Brandenberg W.20 beaching trolley and sawhorse. I don't know if I'll ever build the flying boat, but I'll have the trolley! Back to the Voisin engine problem. The locating hole in the back of the fuselage places the top two cylinders above the top wing and the prop shaft bearer tripod doesn't fit. So, sand off the paint, fill the gaping hole, sand, repaint, and try again. Using photos and drawings, I then tried to locate the engine where it should go only to find out the bearer doesn't align properly there either. I glued the engine in a little bit high and the bearer now aligns. Taking a look at the interplane struts, I just wasn't happy. Some of my drilling wasn't quite on the mark and made the struts crooked, even to my half-blind eye. So, I redid a number of the interplane struts, tearing off a few of the wing rigging lines along the way. The photo etch boom struts that are supposed to act as the center rear interplane struts are too short so I cut them off the boom and replaced them with handmade brass struts. The struts in general are still all a bit ugly. I'm not sure if I want to try cleaning them up and risk losing more rigging or having to reattach struts. All this handling buggered up the top wing paint, so I have lightly sanded it and I will give it another coat after everything else is done. I will do as much rigging as I can between the wings before I add the tail boom.

The engine bearers on the Voisin were far from simple - you have done well to make sure they conform to the location on the fuselage and wing. Do not give up at the stage - you have come too far now: you will eventually get this one together.
The H-B W 20 is a subject on my to do list - an interesting type if a little small.

I think I know what you are going through. Sometimes it is good to step back and take a brake. But in the end, it is satisfying to finish a model that is very rare.
I think we all want to do the best we can with our models but sometimes the tendency to be perfect can be quite an obstacle. But the world is not perfect and efficient
solutions must sometimes let something pass.
-
I almost missed this build, rare and challenging kits. The Voisin is coming along very nice, despite the trouble with the engine, don't give up now, so close to the end. Thumbs up!
Ciao
Giuseppe
-
I, too, would like to encourage you to persevere to the end. It's coming together nicely and this does not look like an easy kit to build.
-
Yes, me too -a very cool model of a very rare kit... I know the feeling too (probably most modellers!) when I tried to install brake lines on a 1/32 jet gear leg 3 hours worth of frustrating work and only 2 lines installed with CA glue mess everywhere :(
Next evening with a fresh mind I went ahead and got nearly all of them installed properly.... modelling is strange hobby for sure -rewarding and frustrating at the same time!
I hope you'll get to finish the model eventually, I have some 'warted' models that I'm even more proud of, purely because they were much more challenging and unique. :)
-
Keepin' on, keeping' on. The two interior bays have their structural lines. I thought the instructions were incorrect as they show them as double lines with the middle and outer bays rigged as single line. I checked the datafile drawings and pictures showing the same. So, double lines it is.

Thanks for all the motivation gang!
The rigging of the wings took a lot longer than I thought it would. Whew! I've never done so much rigging. The tail boom is now attached. It's starting to look somewhat like a Voisin. I'll do all the touch ups, paint the pulleys and aileron struts, clean up the tail boom, and then begin rigging the back end next.

I did all the interplane rigging done, attached the tail boom, and rigged it. Taking it all in, I decided the next step was to repaint it. Yup, I didn't like the color. Originally I didn't want to do a bleach white and tried Ivory. Now, after getting most of it together, it just didn't look right. A repaint in off white over the ivory give it a warm white color but not as yellow as the Ivory which is exactly what I was going for. I now have to reattach broken lines and clean all of them up. I'm really enjoying getting this one completed.

Three weeks since I started rigging, the majority is done. I have the landing gear lines yet to go. The photo etch booms, and other bits took a real beating trying to rig this beast. Vallejo paint is very fragile. So, lots of touch ups in my future. And my DSLR macro skills are still awful.

That looks better with every update. The rigging does look complex when completed but tackled systematically it is can be done - just time consuming! A mini-masterpiece is well on the way.
Wobbly booms are not at all helpful which is why I always use brass rod or florists wire for my models - the metal is sufficiently rigid to stop that problem.
