I see Early Bird is working on a Nie27 in 1/72 and I have been fascinated by the subject of the Roden 1/72 artwork for this plane for some time. RFC kite with French camo and out of proportion roundels. Graceful bird, colourful subject.
So for a week or two I have been preparing the Roden 1/32 kit to represent B6768 as shown on the 1/72 colour diagram.
Sandy
-
First stage was completing all the innards - quite an easy task as I'm simultaneously building a CSM Nie17 and could copy that kit's better layout for the Roden machine. Main components ready for the paint shop.
-
.... and post priming stage with undersurface rib positions marked in in soft pencil...
-
Some colour added - MRP clear doped linen underneath and Tamiya acrylics up top. I mixed my own shades of green around XF-71 and stored the various shades in little airtight shampoo bottles (pinched from a hotel visit!) to keep for touch up etc as required.
-
State of play so far.
Roundels applied (dreadful problems with under top wing positions not adhering), gloss varnishes, struts, oils on prop and outer struts etc, wheel and tyres - and Model Cellar pilot figure primed. Next stage fin and rudder strips and the most difficult job - fashioning the serial numbers!
Onwards and upwards!
Sandy
-
Wow, another Nieuport. I will enjoy this build.
Kevin
-
that's looking awesome, you've done a great job on the camo scheme and i look forward to seeing it come together
-
Looking beautiful ! You are certainly doing a much cleaner construction job than I managed 8) It is good to see this challenging kit get some attention!
RAGIII
-
You have made excelent progress with this - and an interesting type that I had not really heard of until it started to appear on this forum.
Stephen.
-
This looks great. The paint job is really sharp and the build looks very clean, too.
Bye Manni
-
Thanks, guys. Much appreciated comments.
It's a great subject, maybe not such a great kit, but at least we have a kit!
I'll post more once I get back to it. Cheers.
Sandy
-
Bit of progress on the Nie - interrupted by a hospital visit for an MRI scan which fortunately dispelled worries about major problems!
Also feel guilty about spending time indoors in Bonnie Scotland when temperatures are soaring and this strange yellow orb is splitting the sky! We had heard rumours about this object called the sun but to actually see it over blue lochs, purple mountains and white beaches is very Mediterranean.
Note fan on desk!
So all major components are completed including pilot, rigging holes drilled, locating holes and pins improved and next stop is final assembly and detail finishes. Might actually get this one finished (if it rains.....)
Sandy
-
Excellent update! The quality of your work on this one makes Me Tempted to get another and see if I can do better than My first attempt!
RAGIII
-
Hey Sandy ,
Well I must say that this is a treat seeing you work unfold on this build . Beautiful job on the camo and I like the use of a pencil for doing the shading , have used this myself . Looking forward to the final pic's on this one :)

Thank you for the kind words - but I wasn't sure if it was all going to end in the bin this morning.
East coast mist here to begin the day - what we call haar - so enthusiasm high, I thought, let's get those wings on.
Because of the very poor engineering, symmetry and locating system for this Roden kit I thought an unconventional approach was appropriate - mount the top wing and hang the lower wings off it with functional rigging. Ha, great idea until I found that the cabane struts were nowhere near accurate and resulted in the back of the wing being much higher than the front - ie a negative angle of attack. (You can't really find this out until you assemble the cockpit where these struts mount - ie after a lot of painting.)
So major surgery to reduce the struts and recess into the wing with much swearing and use of the Mark 1 eyeball, until finally a satisfactory top wing. (I'd also installed monofilament thread through tops of struts to provide landing wires to help hang the lower wings n place, so making the whole thing much more difficult as well!!!)
Finally I'm happy with the top wing and the assembly is superglued together.
Sandy
-
Onto the lower wings.
Of course now I find the locating pins for the outer V struts don't line up, so some corrective surgery , drilling and installation of new pins and hesitant checking for symmetry.
Hurrah, it all looks AOK, shipshape and bristol fashion!
S
-
... and again...
(note mono threads taped back out of way while wings initially attached.)
S
-
Now mono threads are tensioned with clothes pegs and CA applied to add strength and to seal .3mm holes drilled all the way through wings. This later sliced flush and touched up to be invisible, but add much strength - just like the real thing, as Airfix used to say!
S
-
Ha. she's starting to look like a Nieuport now!
S
(after almost chucking it at a wall this morning, I'm actually very pleased with how this is progressing - the Nie27 is a very pretty aeroplane and I love this colour scheme with French camo set off against the vivid RFC roundels.)
-
Sorry about the camera phone pics but this is a close up of an upper roundel to try to show how little evidence of the through-wing mono thread shows after slicing flush with a razor blade. There is a millimetric spot to be touched up with paint but completely flush surface.
I've used this method of rigging for decades and find it immensely strong - especially useful if you have big heavy resin wings. Also I add shaped blobs of acrylic medium or thick paint to represent turnbuckles which IMHO are scale appropriate.
I'll try to get some high definition pics once it's complete to show details more clearly.
Sandy
-
Looks Terrific! Just a question here. Did you modify the lower wing roots at all? If not I see No Sign of strut misalignment thus this was perhaps a mistake on My build of the 24bis!!
RAGIII
PS: I am one of the "Few" that agree about the Turnbuckles ;D
-
Thanks Rick. At prep stage I cut off lower wing pins and drilled holes for longer pins made of plastic rod so I had a more secure joint, but the way the geometry of the wings is designed is a bit out of kilter.
I've always supported Roden and I think the Albatros is a terrific kit, in many ways preferable to the Wingnuts one, but you said the Nieuports were designed by another company, which really shows. Still I'd rather have a Roden N27 than none!
S
-
Hey Sandy ,
She is gorgeous with the wing in place , really impressed with your nice clean work .
Alexis
-
just catching up a bit with this one, glad you didn't give up with it as it's looking terrific and it's not a true roden kit without a bit of swearing here and there ;D
-
Nice and clean work, Sandy. This plane is a bit unusual in that the camo pattern wraps around to the underside of the fuselage.
-
Thanks guys.
Touch up paints ready at hand. You can tell I mix makes rather a lot!
See the hotel shampoo bottles I use to mix, thin and store airbrush shades during a build. Also my preferred acrylic varnish.
S
-
This is looking beautiful Sandy, your home brewed paint mixes look superb. I have a CSM Nieuport in the stash that keeps calling out to me. This thread is pushing it further up the queue!
Richie
-
Thanks Richie
... et maintenant La Nieuport a des jambes et un pied arrière ...
S
-
Very nice Sandy! This Noop looks terrific. I really like this scheme. Keep going!
Best regards,
Bob
-
Okay , I don't understand French at all so have no idea what you just said , but I will say ...don't forget to paint the lewis gun ! ;)
Really enjoy this Sandy :) :) :)
Alexis
-
Brilliant work on the model, Sandy. Your Hotel Shampoo Bottle idea is one of the best tips I've seen in ages - thanks for that!
Cheers,
Gary
-
Looking great as an upside down Bi Plane !
RAGIII
-
Thanks guys, its at the stage now where it's flying towards completion (famous last words!)
Sesquiplane Rick! and I'll paint the mitrailleuse, Alexis!
Cheers S
-
:) :) :)
Alexis
-
Oh merde!
Thought I'd run all the interplane rigging wires and tensioned, sealed and touched up all the holes - only to realise I'd forgotten the lower outer strut to front u/c leg cable! Putain! Out with the fine drills again.
Sandy
-
That pilot is expecting a 100% complete build here! ;D
Great work so far!
-
That pilot is expecting a 100% complete build here! ;D
Great work so far!
No , he is thinking what the hell is taken so long to finish her up . I got my flying gear on but yet ........
Thumbs up Sandy !
Alexis
-
Biggles is contemplating the rudder and saying to himself, Yes fine so far, but how are you going to get the distinctive serials looking right.
I'm wondering the same myself!
S
-
LOL :)
Alexis
-
Biggles - "I say, Old Pipkin, will you get the finger out and get my rudder and lewis attached so I can take her up for a spin!"
Most major components added, thick white paint turnbuckles applied and ready for some panel definition, light weathering and satin coating. Then I have to really think how I do the rudder serials!!!
Sandy
-
That looks great! Some beautiful modelling going on! ATB, Marc
-
I'm sure Biggles would suggest using a mask to paint the serials... It can be done I'm sure, even with a white outline. I could probably help you with that if you're interested.
Great build overall!
/Fredrik
-
Thanks guys. And especially for the offer of help, Fredrik.
I think I've sourced appropriate serials on an Xtradecal sheet from Hannants - I'll see if they fit the bill.
Cheers
Sandy
-
👍
-
Billy Bishop "That's all very well for you chivying him up to finish your plane, Biggles, but what about my N17 that he put on hold to build your N27? And I'm still stuck in bubble wrap in this box!!!"
PS "Do you think I could claim some victories with it anyway?"
S
-
;D Your Nieuport is Stunning Sandy! The rigging is looking Fantastic as is the Figure. Very inspiring work!
RAGIII
-
Sandy , just a beauty so far !
Alexis
-
Haha,I love both the commentary and the model. Looking jolly spiffing old bean - period British cool talk for those overseas. :)
Richie
-
That's the easy bit.
Now comes the hard part!
Plan is to try white water colour pencil or paint for the outlines against the red stripe. I can wash off if it's a mess. If my hand really is not steady enough I may have to settle for this mind you! If I can get the outer outline I can apply a second numeric decal over first to get sharp inner edges. At least that is the theory.
Sandy
-
nice job on the rigging, good luck with adding the white border i know my hand is not steady enough to attempt something like that
-
The rudder is looking great. Best of luck on the outlines! What colors did you use for the red and blue?
RAGIII
-
Whether I look at the painting, the rigging or anything else, it looks real great. 👍
-
Thanks compadres, any encouragement is greatly appreciated. The rudder stripes are Humbrol enamels which I don't use very often but I've got a drawerful from way back and the standard red (19) and blue (25) colours gave a great match to the decal colours.
(And in the background you can see Humbrol Middle Blue (89), which I like for the Nieuport interior blue framework.)
Cheers
Sandy
-
OK so trying to create the white outline on serials by hand didn't work out too well.
First attempt with a Mitsubishi pigmented ink white pen resulted in a wavery mess which just showed how age is taking it's toll! I'm sure a few decades ago I'd have free handed such details with ease. Not any more! A good irrigation with water and everything back to stage one.
Next attempt with water colour paint and a very fine brush was better but ultimately not a result I could live with, so, more water to clean everything off again.
Third try: I applied duplicates of the necessary four numbers from the Xtracolor decal sheet to some spare white decal (from a 1/32 Revell Red Arrows Hawk as it happens!) being very careful not to allow any water on the white decal - hence squiggledy angles.
Then very carefully with a very sharp scalpel I cut out the inner, then outer excess to leave a reasonable representation of what I was after.
Sandy
-
Apply to rudder - et voila - I'm delighted with the result and after it's all sealed in with varnish I'll fix fin to fuselage and complete the tail rigigng.
That's a relief, to complete a stage I was dreading. Must see what it looks like in situ.
S
-
Even just temporarily perched on the Nie's tail, the rudder really sets off the colour scheme (I think, anyway).
Now there's a tail wind and the end is in sight!
Sandy
-
Nice handy work with great results!!
Steve
-
That Nieuport just looks really great!
Andreas
-
Now that is something I have Never Tried! Applying a decal to a decal and trimming was a Brilliant idea and the results speak for themselves! Your Nieuport looks incredible and I look forward to the completion of this Beauty!!
RAGIII
-
That boy Sandy , I knew you could do it :) The results are just awesome ! Looking forward towards the rest now and in the complete section !
Alexis
-
really happy for you that this turned out the way it did, top job on the markings and your 27 is looking awesome
-
Brilliant execution with the decals!
-
Thank you for the kind comments. Funny how the solution finally pops into your head after weeks of pondering over all the wrong answers! Of course once I got down to it, it only took half an hour to cut and apply the outlined numbers!
One thing that has been bothering me is the spindly tailskid which just did not look right so, back to the only photograph of B6768 that I know and - off with the old and on with the new. More appropriate tailskid added.
Just got the footstep, prop and gun to add now - and the final detail shading and overall finishing. Tally Ho!
Sandy
-
That decal is so clever and beautifully done. I'm very much looking forward to seeing the completed model. It really does look amazing!
Richie
-
Thanks Richie, we're just about there now.
Footstep, Pitot tube, gun support added - just the lewis really to go on now.
Of course la petite femme fatale had not given up that easily: when I started to spray the satin coat, my Neo airbrush just would not emit anything, so I switched to the H&S but again problems there - probably with my Galeria/water mix - so she ended up being top-coated via a cheap chinese rip-off brush! Huh, lots of stripping and cleaning for me today.
Anyway, this is probably last post pre-completion - but you can see I've a few more in the background to get on with - maybe none as pretty as this one though!
Sandy
-
I knew you could do it Sandy , well done on the numbers and the new tail skid ....thumbs up ! Also took note on the auto's that still need building ;)
Alexis
-
Thanks Alexis - I'm afraid the stash problem is much greater than just shown in the previous pic!!!
(There's also a pile of WNWs in the big cupboard!)
S
-
Sandy, gorgeous Noop 27! Very well done.
Ha! That stash looks familiar . . . ::)
Best regards,
Bob
-
Thanks Bob - and everybody for the encouraging comments
She's over in the completed models section now.
Cheers
Sandy

Nice work!!.....but dont show us you stripping and cleaning.....
