Wight Quadruplane
The second finished model this year is the Wight Quadruplane in 1/48. The original aircraft was flown and modified multiple times, this is the final version. But it was not successful enough to be ordered into serial production.
The resin kit is from Spin Model, the Clerget 9Z engine by Small Stuff. Airscrew, struts and cockpit parts are made from real wood. Beside that also a lot of metal parts are added, like the turned cowling.
Painting was done with Mr Paint, Gunze, Drooling Bulldog and oil paints for the light weathering.

And now have fun with the pictures!

I held back on the weathering, as the original was quite clean - except for the middle part of the lower wing, because that was completely oil-covered.

Some of you may know the Sopwith Triplane as a small aircraft - the Quadruplane is much smaller!

I am really happy with the result, even from a resin kit you can build nice models.
Cheers,

Another Brilliant build added to your collection Frank! Beautiful in every aspect!

Nicely finished, Frank - such a unique subject and done to perfection. I can't get over the work you did on the engine and the cowling. It looks fabulous. Quite the rigging job on that one too. Congrats on successfully tackling that project.
Cheers,
Gary

Frank my friend , you did a fantastic job on constructing this kit and I do hope to see more resin builds by you .
How did like building a resin kit ?

Beautifully done Frank.
A strange beast indeed!
Cheers,

Beautiful little plane, the huge amount of additional work is clearly visible from every detail. Well done.

Perfect work Frank! It is always a big joy to look at your models with tons of details. Normally we should be sad to see that you finished this one but we all know that there will be another great model coming up.

Love it Frank, another brilliant model crammed full of awe inspiring added details. I'd never heard of this odd little aircraft before. I actually think it looks kind of cute but in a very cool way. It looks fantastic alongside the Triplane. I'm looking forward to the next project!

Superb model, Frank -
Love the turned metal effect on the cowling
BTW - Reminds of something from the cartoon 'Catch the pidgeon'!

Superb model, Frank. I'm sure the kit was a bit of a sow's ear but you've turned it into a very silken purse.
In a what-if world, I'm imagining squadrons of Quadraplanes doing battle with D.28 Floh equipped Staffeln!
Lovely

Thank you Rick, Gary, Alexis, Hugh, Giuseppe, Manni, Richie, Dave and Sandy! I'm glad that you like it!
Quite the rigging job on that one too.
The beast is so small, that I can't use turnbuckles or RAF wire terminals as usual. So the Eduard "Stretchers" set was the only solution come to my mind.
How did like building a resin kit ?
Alexis, I have to say I prefer plastic kits, but since resin kits allows subjects we will never see in plastic, it is ok for me. The kit was a bit "rough", but offers a good base. So yes, also a resin kit allows some fun!
I'm looking forward to the next project!
Richie, as promised I will join to create a little group build. Started already 8)

Thanks Dave, found a funny teaser ;D

Thanks for the warning Sandy! I put the Quadruplane and the Floh on different levels of the cabinet to avoid aerial combat damage!
Thanks again,
Frank

What a beau…. Oh no, this is not the case, but a very interesting model and perfectly build.
Great job!

Looks like a cartoon plane.
The front end grabs the attention. Your polishing on the cowling is a unique feature and the engine detail is very visible.
I don't expect to see another one of these!
-
Awesome & bizarre at the same time Frank!
I guess they had a stepladder on hand for the pilot!

Wow, what a weirdo!!! And so nicely built!

I really like odd aeroplanes and this is truly one of them. This is the handiwork of a true craftsman modeller: the engine cowlong and metal parts, extra tiny but significant details, rigging - I could go on and on. It looks much bigger that it really is - I could easily believe that was 1/32 scale. Another gem in your collection of jewels.
Stephen.

Hi Frank,
Congratulations on a seriously stunning build.
I'd not seen this aircraft until your build started.
The build detail and especially the rigging are top notch,
Mike
-
Superb Frank. It's sometimes a real challenge to align two wings properly but you managed to align 4 wings. Great!
-
You've done it again Frank, another truly spectacular addition to your beautiful collection! The detailing and your signature scratch built additions, most particularly the metal work, place this work in a class of it's own. Most impressive, and my sincere compliments on your enviable skills!
Cheers,
Lance

Thank you Andreas, Ken, Guy, Prze, Stephen, Mike. Ferry and Lance! Your comments are highly appreciated!
I don't expect to see another one of these!
What about this one on your bench? Looks very common to your recently built 504:

The build detail and especially the rigging are top notch,
Mike, the bird (and the distance between the wings) is so small that I could not use the usual turnbuckles or RAF wire terminals. Rigging felt like I was building a 1/72 model ::)
It's sometimes a real challenge to align two wings properly but you managed to align 4 wings.
Here I take the advantage of my build method. It was possible to bend the brass pins of the struts with brute force on the wings. ;)
my sincere compliments on your enviable skills!
Lance, I am very glad that these skills now include resin models. This will definitely not be the only model made of this material.
Sorry for my late answer, as I was some days not at home (so also no progress on my projects).
Cheers,
Frank

That's excellent, Frank! Really quite an eye catcher.

Hats off Frank.
The four wings would be a nightmare for me!

What a wonderful build; Spin kits aren’t the easiest to build I’ve done their Bristol M.1c and the Sage. It had to have taken considerable time and lots of patience to line up those small struts and the four wings. And then add the complex rigging.
The finish colors look perfect too. Congratulations on a great model.
-
Thank you very much Gaz, Willem and Charlie!
The four wings would be a nightmare for me!
Oh yes, the kit was for a long time in my stash, I found it interesting, but was a bit afraid due to resin and the four wings.
Spin kits aren’t the easiest to build I’ve done their Bristol M.1c and the Sage.
It was helpful to do a kit conversion with a Spin modification set (Pfalz Triplane Experimental) to get familar with that resin.
Cheers,
Frank

The real plane moght have been under-appreciated, certainly not your excellent model !

Thank you Ed!
That was not my last build of Spin Models, as 'half-model' scratch builder it gives my a good base to add scratched parts ;)
Nice to see you, I hope you are fine!
Cheers,
Frank
