Hello my dear friends,
there is something new from me again.
I have chosen the Jeannin Stahltaube from Wingnut Wings. This plane has fascinated me since I was a child. I looked at it again and again in a book about airplanes from my grandfather (the book was already very old at that time, I think the Taube was a state-of-the-art-plane in this book ;)).

(https://abload.de/img/2jhj5e.jpg) (https://abload.de/image.php?img=2jhj5e.jpg)
There are also figures from Black dog and Elan35.
There will be 2 pilots standing in front of the Taube, that is nosed ower to be photographed.
(https://abload.de/img/3osj59.jpg) (https://abload.de/image.php?img=3osj59.jpg)
That plane is catching my eye here because of the shape of the wings and of the oversized crosses.
The first thing I did was assemble the wonderful 120hp Argus ASII. Unfortunately, the instructions do not show that the proposed engine is also present as a highly detailed mold on the sprue. Here the valve lifters and ignition wires are not cast on. I have scratched them here with lead wire and streched sprue. I have added the missing oil tank on the starboard side (just guessing the shape and position)

(https://abload.de/img/5r0jak.jpg) (https://abload.de/image.php?img=5r0jak.jpg)
The harnesses included with the kit are etched and accordingly two-dimensional, which I don't like. Here HGW offers nice lasercut harnesses, but they also have only etched spiral springs. Therefore I took a wire from the shielding of an USB cable (0.1mm) and glued it to the handle of an acupuncture needle.
(https://abload.de/img/6j9kvd.jpg) (https://abload.de/image.php?img=6j9kvd.jpg)
(https://abload.de/img/7g4ju8.jpg) (https://abload.de/image.php?img=7g4ju8.jpg)
Then simply pinch the needle between 2 fingers and twist with thumb and forefinger. This will create a spiral on the needle.
[url=https://abload.de/image.php?img=80jjvf.jpg](https://abload.de/img/80jjvf.jpg) (https://abload.de/image.php?img=7g4ju8.jpg)
This spiral can be slid onto an annealed acupuncture needle and wrapped around a toothpick. Cut the whole thing open on one side and you have wonderful round spiral springs bent into a circle for the straps.

Here are some pictures of the cockpit. The belts are now sticking out strangely, but that's because they are supposed to hang down later.

(https://abload.de/img/132ak8o.jpg) (https://abload.de/image.php?img=132ak8o.jpg)
In my eyes, the worst part of this terrific kit is the so-called spider, where above the cockpit and and on the landing gear the cables of the wings were secured with turnbuckles.
Since these parts are extremely present here, they had to be refined a bit. For this I took turnbuckles from Gaspatch Models.

That's it for now, see you soon,
Yours, Manni

Lovely start, Manni. Especially those refinements in the seat belts are eye-catching. I will be watching with great interest. Taube is on my to-do list and I plan to choose kit option C, too :-)
-
Wow Manni, what a great (and huge?) project!
And I'm sure, we will at the end not only see a nice Taube, but also again a great environment.
The spiral springs looks so real, because they are real. Perfect way to model them!
Have fun and stay safe!

Wow Manni , you are off to an excellent start on this one . Nice job on refining the details on the seatbelts and the turnbuckles :)

Awesome!

Great inner works, I built this out from the box but your fine scratch additions and paintwork really give life and extra value to the model. Looking forward for your progress.

Nice start Manny. The extra's look great. I envy you for building this kit. I never had the change to buy this kit and now I'll probably never will. O well, I just follow your build and enjoy it. Have fun.
-
The extra details are in a class of their own Manni. The spiral rings for the seat belts are very impressive, as are the extra engine details. I do like these very early machines - they look so fragile. I can see another of your superb vignettes is in the making so I will be following with interest.
Stephen.

Incredible work Manni, your fine detailing is stunning! The interior is just beautiful, you are a very special modeller!

Incredible detail added to your model - excellent work, Manni!
Cheers,

-
Very good looking interior & detailing work.
-
You're well on your way to another exceptional build, Manni. I'm looking forward to seeing the final display. Your dioramas are excellent.
-
The weathering on the inside is beautifully done. I particularly like the scratches on the floorboard under the pilot's feet. Nice touch!

This will be hell to rig I suspect...

Hello my dear model makers,
Thank you so much for your kind words, I really appreciate the feedback.
It went a little further. I painted the fuselage, the wings and all the attachments.
As I wanted to make the paint job in pure field grey a little more interesting, I had first considered covering the wings with Aviattics Decals Linen in field grey. However, I don't find the decals very easy to work with.
After a very helpful discussion with Przemo (thanks) I decided to go a new way.
I sprayed the fuselage and wings in field grey, lightened with white and decktan over grey and white primer.
Afterwards I covered the parts with a fine tights (I hope this is the right term). You should make sure that the course of the fibres is perpendicular to the direction of flight on the parts.
After that I again darkened field grey with a few drops of black and sprayed it over the covered parts.
Here is the result. I am quite satisfied with it and think that I will use this method more often in the future.
I masked the ribs and drybrushed them with again strongly lightened field grey. I worked on the edges with Watercolorpencils in rich green. Some umbra burnt oil paint to get depth into the wings was the final touch.

I will continue the build in the next few days.
Greetings,
Manni

What a great and creative way to add texture to the wings Manni!
Amazing build altoghether. This one is bookmarked!

You have a nice oil mess in your engine compartment, Manni.
I think long overdue maintenance work is needed on the crankcase and water pump seals.
Bravo, really fine work on the Taube.

Another use for my stockings , that is a neat idea Manni . The effect and then with the weathering really make those wings look so realistic .

Hello. Just joining in to add my appreciation for your work and ideas you are sharing. I really like the seatbelts you've created. One of the problems I have with photoetched ones is getting to appear to lay in a natural limp way. They always just look like strips of metal I feel. Yours bend and lay so nicely. I also really like the texture you've created on the wings. Thanks for sharing. I have this kit as well and will reference your work when I start it.
-
A very clever Idea to add the texture Manni. The pencil and oil weathering is the icing on the cake!

More Manni magic here! Thses are really original ideas - especially the way in which you used different colours and textures to achieve the linen effect on the wings. Looking forward to seeing more.
Stephen.

Nice new ideas!
What was the base of your Field Gray? Tamiya?
Cheers,
Frank

Excellent look and a very promising technique.

Thank you all for your kind words.
Yes, I always try to make something new. Mostly I do everything new because I forgot how I made it the last time. And sadly I am too lazy to make myself some notes (dumb me)
@Frank:I used Tamiyas XF65 Feldgrau as base. I use always Tamiya paint for the main colors, but I thin them with the yellow cap thinner from Tamiya or Mr. leveling thinner.
Bye, Manni

Thanks for sharing that technique for the linnen effect. It looks great.
-
Superb work and results so far Manni; it's great seeing you active again and working your "trademark" magic! Like all of your projects this will be an exceptional model, and I look forward to learning more from your ideas used here.
Cheers,
Lance

What a really clever way to create fabric texture, I love seeing new ideas like this. The results look amazing!

Hello my friends and thank you for all your comments. A little progress is made by me on the model. The weathering is done by oil paint. I think the next step is rigging and then the fun work on the terrain.

Wow, your weathering looks so great !
You could tell me you that you made a picture of a real plane in a museum and I would easily believe it :)
I am definitely looking foreward to your next steps...

Großartig Manni!
That will be a wonderful Taube at the end.
Cheers,
Frank

Like Frank said. It’s going to be a fantastic Taube!

Awesome Manni.
-
That is just beautiful!!!!!
-
Great, Manni! Looking forward to seeing more! I also have this kit of one of my boyhood-heroes when I had read „Der Flieger von Tsing-Tao“ by Gunther von Plüschow. And I do fancy my Taube as a heavily weathered, warweary bird.
-
Hello my friends and thank you for your nice comments. I am very happy about that.
I have finally done something again with my Stahltaube. I have finished the painting and weathering. The rigging was a real challenge for me and of course I broke all the struts by clumsiness. With the help of Rafael's great photos I put the gaspatch turnbuckles in the right places. Now I am very pleased with the Taube how it turned out.

What a nice bird! It is really a member of the early aviation, with it's shape and all the rigging lines 8)
The model is beautiful painted.

This is really a wonderful Taube, Manni. And the diorama setup looks very promising. I am keen on seing it finished in all its beauty.
Best regards,
Andreas

I wondered when the diorama part would come along. A fine looking Taube, Manni. A pity it will be in such an awkward position, but then, one can see the underside!
-
What a beautiful model Manni! Great work on the paint, the weathering and the delicate rigging details.
I am very curious about the end result of the diorama.
