Hi ! Hope everyone is healthy
I haven't been productive for a long time. I moved in New-Caledonia since 2018, in a world without a model and without a store ... I still brought with me some kits, including the Vikers F.B.5 Bluemax.
This kit is a pure shortrun.
You will excuse me in advance for the disastrous quality of the first photos :-X

Bluemax made an effort for some interior details, but I decided to remove everything...

The fuselage is simple, but the details are rough and the openings too rough. In the same way, I deleted everything, to redo everything.

The wings are completely sanded to make them thinner. We must therefore redo the ribs of the wings

More soon
Best regards
-
Welcome back, Arnaud! Excellent work!
Cheers,
Bud
-
Really nice work so far on this kit . I was looking at this kit today wondering if I should start it ...but I think I will watch your build instead . :)
Alexis
-
Beautifully done!
What references do you have for the internals, and particularly the framework and mounting for the engine? I have the Pegasus 1:72 kit but have been unable to find much on those areas.
Ian
-
Superb work - really improving quite a basic kit, well done!
This will be an interesting project to follow
Regards
Dave
-
You are really going the "full mile" on this Kit Arnaud, great work and results already. I'll enjoy following your progress here, an uncommon subject and Kit with lots of superb good old fashioned basic modelling added. Great Post!
Cheers,
Lance
-
Wow what a great work on this awful kit.
I have the same box and your experience will be extremely useful!
Antonio
-
That kit does look crude: the internal details in particular are poor. Your improvements are spectacular and a vast improvement. This is going to be an interesting thread especially as there are too few models of this aircraft seen.
Stephen.
-
Excellent effort on revising this kit! Your treatment of the wings is very realistic.
-
You are doing some real Modeling here! Your improvements to the "Basic" kit are amazing. The painting is spectacular !!
RAGIII
-
Beautiful treatment, the nacelle is astonishing!
Great work on a terrible kit!
Antonio
-
Arnaud, very nice to see you back! Missed you here (and on Scalemates).
And with such a brilliant work on a old kit.
Is your Hansa Brandenburg D.I finished now? I'm not sure where I noticed it ...
Cheers,
Frank

Amazing painting/weathering skills!

Hi friends!
After a long wait, related to the delivery of an order, I was able to continue. And that is not easy. This is my first time doing welding.

Wonderful work! I am very impressed with your brass books.
Kevin
-
Outstanding work on those booms! The paint work on the model is gorgeous.
RAGIII
-
For a first attempt at soldering that is very good indeed. What is more the parts fit! Keep it up - fitting the booms will be fun but it will be worth it in the end.
Stephen.
-
This is fantastic! A Gunbus has been on my To Build list for a long time and I think my skills have caught up to the Blue Max kit, should I be fortunate to track one down. I've saved your build as a kind of "hints and tips" guide for when I do my own.
Beautiful work all around, and those tailbooms look amazing!
-
It is an achievement in itself just to make a Blue Max kit although it looks like you are not using many of the bits from the kit. Looking brilliant so far. Incidentally New Caledonia is a beautifull place as well as the Loyalty Islands. I will most probably never be able to go back there but I am thankful for the time spent there many years ago.
Alan
-
Really some impressive work being done here
Alexis
-
Thank you for your encouragement :), there is still a lot of work! ;D
-
What a spectacular result (s) on such a crude raw material. I will follow this build with great interest. So happy you are back to the bench!
-
Looks like a great job on the soldering, especially for your first time.
-
Thank you Kensar :)
W So happy you are back to the bench!
Ah Thank you very much! ;D I'm very happy to scrape plastic again!! ;)
It progresses:

Really Awesome work on the Booms! Just a superb Model on the way!!
RAGIII
-
Nice results on the booms !
Alexis

It looks as though you have mastered the booms very well. Getting them to fit both the top wing and tail will be the next challenge - but clearly you will be well up to it.
Stephen.

The horizontal stabilizer is not fixed yet. It must be a little weathered.
A bientôt from New-Caledonia...!

Very convincing weathering. Nice work. The booms look great, too.

I agree completely with Ken! The oil staining is Most Impressive!
RAGIII
-
That looks as mucky as one would expect from an oily pusher flying from a muddy airfield, great work!
-
Thumbs up !
Alexis
-
Yes those rotary engines pushed out a great deal of oil - you have made your rudder look very dirty in an appropriate fashion. Excellent.
Stephen.
-
How great to see such a rare bird built. It’s just one of two or so gunbusses I‘ve ever seen being built. And both look amazing.
Andreas

You did a remarkable work on this with lots of detailing and additions, and translucent CDL is terrific. Looking forward to see this rare bird completed.

I love these flying spiderwebs. It looks great and I can't wait to see it finished! Th painting and weathering are beautifully done!

Thank you very much! :) It's very friendly

As much as I'm enjoying seeing what can be made from the Blue Max kit I totally agree. Although 1/48 would be nice 8)

Hello!!!
Thank you very much for your encouragement! :)
I ended up sticking the crutch, a real " Egyptian scourge" ;D !
And I started rigging. It is a mix between the fishing line and the EZ-Line, depending on the difficulty and the manipulations to come.
It's not perfect, and I'm a little angry about some of the details, but better is the enemy of good, so apart from a few tweaks, it's going to stay that way.

It's really a difficult model... :o
A bientôt!

I am not sure what details you are unhappy with but for the record it All looks Superb to Me!
RAGIII
-
Hello Arnaud
I agree with RAGIII, it is superb. Just remember your most savage critic is usually yourself.
Alan.
-
I agree with Rick: there is nothing there that I can see which is anything less than excellent. Keep going - you are making a first class model.
Stephen.
-
And I agree with them: your photos betray nothing of the trials you went through. Beautiful!

Hi there,
A few months ago, I made the brackets from brass scrap, cut with chisels, and drilled to be inserted at the end of each of the masts (0.5mm). Holes of 0.3mm are also drilled to accommodate the struts when the time comes.
(https://i.servimg.com/u/f41/15/91/10/06/receiv10.jpg) (https://servimg.com/view/15911006/1351)

(https://i.servimg.com/u/f41/15/91/10/06/receiv13.jpg) (https://servimg.com/view/15911006/1354)
It should make my work easier for the struts, and it's a big plus in my opinion.
And today I started installing them:

Thank you very much!
Normally, everything's in place to start installation of the upper wing.
It's not too bad.
The cabin struts aren't glued on the photo, but they're exactly on the right axis and perpendicular.

I gave it a try, and the top wing sits nicely on these 4 struts. The anguish for me will be the installation of the 8 interplane struts ....
I've never built a model with so many struts.
And then.... Pray for me ;D .... You can't go wrong

You don't need our prayers, you're work is incredible. This is a really beautiful Gunbus!

Hi there!
You're all too kind, and it's far from finished! :)
I'll be satisfied when it's finished! For now, there's still a long way to go! :-X
Well, after several hours of fumbling, grumbling, breaking, unsticking, redoing etc, I think this should do it.
It's almost too rigid. I don't know how else to explain it. I'm hoping that the interplane rigging will prevent some of the struts from detaching under tension.
The two posterior cabane masts were a hair too long, and impossible to get them off the fuselage. I had to cut half a millimeter off their wing tips with pliers, without being able to attach them before the other struts. In short, I had a hard time...

I'll be able to move on to the rigging soon! This is an important stage in the assembly. The one that had me shaking in anticipation with this old Bluemax kit. Probably my most difficult assembly to date.
See you soon!

Well, now I'm going to have to peel off the entire tubular structure and redo it entirely.
It's out of proportions... I based it on a photocopy, which turned out to be too small... And I hadn't checked!

Agreed! Arnaud, I'd love to see the plans for this jig. I'm too scared to start the build of this kit without one!
I hadn't made any yet. But it was getting complicated for this stage. I simply took the 1/48 plan, drew a line from the lowest part of the "fuselage, lower wing" area to the base of the structure above the stand. Then I reproduced it on tracing paper, and reproduced it on cardboard twice before gluing it to a cardboard plate.
Just read through the whole thread, that is some stunning and meticulous work!
Thank you very much!
I think I can now glue the horizontal tail.

I'm very happy, the proportions are right and the beams are positioned exactly where they should be (without glue for the moment).

Thanks a lot Brad,
Sincerely, I think that the Bluemax kit is not essential. In the end, almost the entire kit had to be redone, and the horizontal planes are simple enough to consider a full scratchbuilt. You should try it, no problem when I see the delicacy of your work with your Albatros.
Arnaud
-
This is just brilliant, your jig has certainly done the job you designed it to do. It's sobuifting and refreshing to see someone having great fun battling with a difficult kit. That is proper old fashioned modelling!
I must add, it's great fun to follow too!

Hi everyone,
Oh!! Thank you so much for your encouraging messages! :D
I'm very happy with the work I've done with this model so far. I feel a progression compared to my previous models! But I can see how much work I still have to do to achieve mastery like some of you. And you're all very motivating with your respective WIPs and finished models.
This is all the more the case as I make models for pleasure and to have fun alongside my work. So I have time to have fun trying to make progress, without pressure. ;D
The Gunbus has made good progress, with what is surely the most important stage of this assembly!
Assembly of CSM's Gnome 9B2 went smoothly. It's a little jewel, with no nasty surprises.
The tank behind the pilot was made from scraps of resin castings and aluminum foil from a yogurt pot.
The photos are in very close-up. I hope you will forgive any visible defects.

There are problems with the axes, which I can see on the model, but I couldn't do any better. A lot of things had to be redone on this model, and that has consequences.
There's still a lot of work to be done to declare it finished!
See you soon
Arnaud :)
-
Il est superbe, Arnaud! I have to keep reminding myself that this is a 1:48 kit and not 1:32.
Dave V.
-
Arnaud,
I have built one of these in God's Own Scale (my first pusher conversion), and in 1/32 (my first large scale scratch build), so I think that I know something about getting alignments right. Your alignments look just right to me - and I know how they can be difficult to get right! There are almost certainly minor mis-alignments on almost every model of a pusher, no matter how well the kit is engineered and how skillful the modeller. The secret is to keep them as invisible as possible and you have managed to do just that. This is a truly first class model in the making, in particular the finish, which is very realistic. I really think that most people who look at this when it is finished will be concentrating on the finish and overall impression rather than worrying about whether the wings are a mm or so out of true.... This is going to be a model to be proud of - I know that I would be if it were mine.
Stephen.
-
Thanks so much Dave, really!
Stephen, your 1/32 scale Gunbus was a great source of inspiration for my model. Particularly the cockpit
I don't know how you manage to get such a beautiful result with half the model without the fabric. It must be hell for alignment and strength!!!!
I've never made a 1/32 scale model before. Yet I have 3 in stock: a Nieuport XXI CSM, a Morane Saulnier type N SH and an AMC DH.2 WNW. Very tempting. Maybe soon, with a preference for the Nieuport.
-
I certainly don’t see any problems! Looking really nice.
-
Lovely work on the engine and like the others I see no alignment issues. The whole model is looking awesome!
RAGIII
-
Very nice Gunbus with outstanding paint job.
The builder knows about all the tiny flaws and imperfections and is wondering why all the other guys,
even modelers, don't see them. Because they don't know them!
Put the model into the cabinet and wait a couple of months till you forget the flaws,
and you will not see them anymore!
Greetings Joe
-
Thank you very much for your messages. :D
It's mainly the tail that's not perfectly horizontal. If I have the courage, I'll unstick one of the beams under the tailplane and glue it back in place to force the squareness.
The Gunbus received most of the rigging, in EZ line for the tail. I hate it, but it's still practical... There are some left, but they'll be placed once it's on its wheels. Otherwise, it's going to be complicated to handle afterwards.

Fantastic!
Andreas

All of the Commonly used superlatives seem to fall short on this one! The Union Jack Markings set off the beautifully painted and shaded wings perfectly. The rigging just makes it even better! I really can't say enough about how striking this Model is!!!
RAGIII
-
It's really beautiful! Before attempting the risky business of trying to correct the alignment error, which I can't see, if you have any model making friends nearby ask them to look over it and see if they notice anything out of alignment. I find my mistakes always seem like a really big deal to me but often others never notice until I point them out.
Best of luck whatever you decide, it's a stunning model as it is to my eye.
Richie

Just beautiful. The essence of pioneering aviation in every detail.

Bravo Arnaud, she looks utterly superb!

Oh my, that's just stunning.
I had this kit, back in my 1/48 days but was always too intimidated to start it! You have fought it to beautiful submission very effectively. Cracker.

That is one very impressive model even if it is not quite finished. I would not bother trying to correct a very small error - you will probably end up causing more damage and issues than the one you are trying to solve. I would give that a gold medal in any competition and would be very proud to have it in my display cabinet.
Stephen.

Today I was able to add the final details and rigging.
The propeller is now being painted. The kit's propeller is horrible. It's 5 cm in diameter, when it should be 6 cm, and its shape is too thin. I used one from another model, which was more form-fitting. Once the paint has dried, it will be equipped with a PE plate and added plastic bolts to add volume and detail.
The next update should be the last! :D
See you soon!
Arnaud ;D

Latest update!
I had a lot of fun with the propeller taken from a Sopwith Snipe Hi-tech box.
It's made of recycled PE. I redid the bolts (1 out of 2) and added a big central hub.
