Title: New spoked wheels.
Post by: Des on December 11, 2012, 02:54:46 PM
A new range of spoked wheels will be available shortly from Scalespokes, a new company formed in conjunction with UMM. These are magnificent wheels and come in 1:72, 1:48 and 1:32 scales, they have aluminium rims and hubs, copper wire spokes and real rubber tyres, the picture below is a bit fuzzy but gives a good idea of what the wheels will look like. John is hoping to have them released before Christmas, here is a link to their new website.  http://www.scalespokes.com/new/  and  http://www.scalespokes.com/

They are stunning, and a pair will find their way onto my Eindekker. The only minor isue I can see is that until the middle of the war (i.e. post-Eindekker) most aircraft and car tyres were grey, not black.

The tyres will be available in either a black or white rubber, but can be painted what ever colour you like.

I can see the day when models are sold, not just with added AM in the box, but pre-built to such a degree that you merely need to take the lid off the box and - voilĂ !

That solves the problem!

The tyre upgrade kits that will be offered are described as "flattened" and resin so its all good.

I couldn't find any prices mentioned but by the looks of them(appear to be very high quality) I suspect they may be a little expensive. Oh well, "what price happiness?" ::)

One way of reading the site is they are already assembled, you just put the tyre on and then add valve stems etc. That does seem like an expensive proposition though doesnt it?

Yes, but for 1-2 planes, they might really add some "pop".

  Steve,
You may be right about the preassemled part.Yes it is an expensive proposition, but it would certainly up the detail. Might be an awesome addition to WNW's new Fokker E family my old friend.

MERRY CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY NEW YEAR to you and your's

Right.  Since I would only use them on a couple planes, it's an expenditure I can live with.  I have a 1/48 scale HR Fokker B.I that I've been itchin' to build, but have put off until I could make acceptable wire wheels.  I struggled for hours just to make one wheel using pe.  It's worth it to me to just buy the wheels and devote more time to detaling the rest of the model.  After all, if we were not building a model with wire wheels, we would simply cut a plastic wheel off the sprue, clean it up, paint it and slap it on.  It doesn't diminish the skills required in building a model any more than using pe seat belts or pre-rolled MG jackets.  I think it's actually closer to using lozenge decals as opposed to hand painting them.
Cheers,
Bud

I just want to know how they can make them look so good in 1/72 scale. Incredible.

I have seen the wheels  in person when I was at the Orlando IPMS Nationals . The wheels are made very nice and will look great on any WW1 A/C.

So Willi do the wheels/spokes come pre assembled?

From the information I have the wheels are pre assembled, the first three wheels to be released will be for the Fokker DR.1, the Fokker E.III and the SE.5a, these will be perfect for the new WnW Fokker E series. You have to remember that this is a brand new company so they are busy getting things ready for the initial release, they hope before Christmas. We just have to hold tight and wait for news but I'm sure what will be released will be spectacular.

Thankyou. Thats excellent. That is a fiddly job at the very least let alone get them looking as good as you, the experts, do. I will be picking up some of these as they become available.

Me too!
I like the logic expressed earlier; expensive but if only used on a few kits (Fokker E Series for sure) they make good sense.

Most PART of Poland PE sets have spokes included.

..but the Part parts dont come with a third arm so I can put all the Part parts together. I tried a 35th bicycle a few years ago and it was crazy.

I built a set of Toms Modelworks PE spoked wheels for my Voisin build, they turned out really good but believe me, they were a nightmare to assemble, very fiddly and fragile and like you said Steve, I needed a third arm. I have to admit though, once assembled they became very strong and once painted didn't look too bad, they still have the flat spokes though.

One more question. Wheels will buy complex as the pictures show or for self-assembly. A range of accessories that will only "replacements" for purchased finished wheels? Is the accessory kit will allow the individual submitting the wheel?

I think the hubs and spokes are pre assembled. All you do is put the tyre on.

Hello all,

I got to meet John Vojtech of UMM-USA at a swapmeet at the Indianapolis IPMS show/contest this weekend.  What a pleasant fellow!  I saw he had several of the UMM-USA/Scale Spoked Wheels on the table that I had not seen on the website when I was first introduced to these two months ago.  Here is some info you might find of interest.  He says they have improved their process, the wheels are thinner now (I can attest to that having bought an original set for the DR1).  He said they take about 1/2 hour for the people has trained to make.  He also mentioned the man and woman he has making them are in their 60's which I found a bit incredible given the minuteness of the wires.  I purchased a set for the EIII that looked great.  One very nice upgrade... they used to come with a set of black and white rubber tires.  They now come with a set of black rubber but also a set of gray plastic rims.  That will be the route I go with.  He said to follow the new instructions on his website to install the rims into the plastic tires.

I also purchased a very nice rivet making tool he had that had detachable points to make rivets in about 20 different small to micro sizes.  I thoroughly enjoyed meeting John and seeing up close some of the various tools he had for sale.
