Next build!
I'm sticking to Eduard and 1/48 scale after my (in the end) quite enjoyable Brisfit build. So far we've passed the stage where everything is up on toothpicks ready for primer, and the drill holes and prep for internal rigging stage.
I saw that there were turnbuckles to tighten the internal rigging and thought I'd use Gaspatch's 1/48 ones... but they were far too large so I made some turnbuckle representations out of white glue.

After having started on the wrong engine and almost completed that, this is where the proper one ended up. Nothing fancy except for what was in the box.

According to the WnW instructions there was a plywood floor and back 'wall', so I went for that. Maybe a little too large too look like 1/48 scale plywood, but it was fun playing around a little with the oils.
And this is where she is at the moment. I've done some dryfitting and worry a little about getting the fuselage together. There might be putty on the horizon...

Fredrik,
This will be a great build to follow. Thanks for sharing your progress.

Nice start so far Fredrik , your plywood is very convincing :) Looking forward on seeing the build progress . Have you chossen a scheme yet ?
Terri

Lovely work and a great start! I like the ply surfaces!
RAGIII

great start with nice detailing. The ply looks good!

Excellent work. Will you be using masks for this one.
Gary

Thanks for the supportive comments!
Terri: I've been looking a little at this scheme from the WnW boxing (Image linked from WnW website.)
But, I saw that there is an update to this profile where they suggest that the blue should be grey instead... I might go for blue anyway.
Gary: I suppose I could paraphrase Hamlet and say that 'To mask or not to mask..." :) I will mask and paint everything that can be done in this way. Quite straight forward masking on this model. I'll see if I can cut masks for the lettering on the fuselage, but that is probably too small for the machine to do well.
Take care!

A very nice start!
I will watch closely, since I have this kit in different variants in my (huge) stash.
I find it great, that there seems to be greater interest in the 1/48 scale after the WNW issue.
Cheers,
Frank

Looking great Fredrik!
Guy
Ps I hope that isn’t a cheeky non WW1 Spitfire hiding on your bench... :D
-
Excellent start to this one Frederik. The engine looks like a little gem - a pity much of it will be hidden. The cockpit interior is also super.
Stephen.
-
Thanks Frank, Guy and Stephen! I appreciate the interest. I might be able to show some more progress tonight. I got the fuselage together and there's a lot of putty on it too. The best part of modelling isn't sanding!
Guy: No, there isn't one 'cheeky non WW1 Spitfire' on my bench. I promise! There's two of them! :D Brilliant kits!
/Fredrik
-
Looks good! That engine has a nice "delicate" look to it :)
-
Further progress has been achieved... a little bit of one step back and two steps forward or the opposite in some cases.
The fuselage was closed, but needed quite a lot of filler, as I feared. The good thing about that is of course that once done you end up with a nice smooth surface.
PE stitching included in the box was attached. This time I simply placed it on the plastic and then ran liquid cement along it. Works just fine on flat PE.
When attaching the top cowl the fuselage needed a little persuasion in order to end up where I wanted it to be.
/Fredrik
-
That's a fair amount of putty need on the under belly , nice work on smoothing it all out .
Terri
-
I agree that sanding is not the best part of modeling! Your results are looking great. Interesting about the liquid cement and the stitching PE. I might try reinforcing My Roden DR1 with some 8)

I had to go to page 2 to find my topic. I suppose that is a sign of how much is posted on this site and all of it is well worth looking at!
Anyway... I've managed to move forward a little. There's always room for more putty, it seems. In this case it wasn't too bad, I needed to redo the metal paint anyway. The swirls actually look better when not magnified by a camera lens, still there but not as obvious.
I decided to go for Udet's machine and painted the Fokker in Fokker grey - Gunze H70 in my case. Next up is masking the ribs.

Some or most of the smaller details have been painted and are just waiting for assembly.

Masking and painting the fuselage bands. It went rather ok. Just one finger that got away and planted a nice print in the wet paint. All sorted now.

That is a lot of filler!
Is it the kit you think? Deformed parts?
Guy
-
You made a huge progress, with painting already.
Some or most of the smaller details have been painted and are just waiting for assembly.
This cost often a lot of time!
Looks already like a little Fokker :D
Cheers,
Frank

Lovely work on the cowling and band! Looking Terrific!
RAGIII

Hey Fredrik ,
Your swirls on the cowl turned out really well , you are right second attempt much better ;) Thumb prints and such add character . Every build I have done has a flipping piece of cat hair in the finish . ::)
Really like that shade of blue :)
Terri

Thanks Terri, Rick, Frank and Guy!
Fingerprints and other mistakes - a philosophical idea...
I have this idea that every unopened box holds the perfect model inside and then, as soon as you open the box, you start to destroy this unattainable perfection. Every choice you make and every thumb, or ,in this case, index finger print takes you further from the perfect idea. And yet it is worth while building models, since it, on the other hand, is it difficult to tell what mistakes are real mistakes and what mistakes that add personality to a kit or what mistakes that won't be visible in the end... and you might actually achieve perfection the next time! 😃
Guy: I had the same issue on the Brisfit. I suppose it's the fuselage parts that are a little deformed. It strikes me now that you could try and insert spreaders to try and improve fit before resorting to putty.
Cheers
Fredrik

That’s a good idea Fredrik!
Obviously, it’ll be a case of trial and error I guess. I just thought Eduard would be better than that..
Your statement re perfection is spot on! That’s exactly how I feel. I start off with an award winning best in show kit and I gradually wear it down into something average! ;D
Guy
-
Guy, so far I've only built Eduard's Albatros D.III and D.V, Brisfit and now the Fokker and the youngest of those kits is from 2008 according to Scalemates. A lot(!) has happened with Eduard kits since then. I expect newer kits to be better and I've got a few lined up as my next build.
Average you say?! I beg to differ there. Your latest is enough to prove me right and you wrong. 😀 But I get how you feel and you might see why I was a bit overwhelmed by comments here on the forum about my Eduard Brisfit. The perception of others just didn't match my own, but I'm very happy with it now.
/Fredrik
-
Yes, again, I’m the same.
I only see the flaws!
Perhaps I need to see a shrink!
Guy
-
This is looking good, Faf. It will be great when its all put together.
I constantly exploit the notion that mistakes add personality.
-

Fredrik, that is really a cool view on it! 8)
To continue that thought: With my scratch work I try to compensate a part of my mistakes. ;D
Cheers,
Frank

Thanks Guy, Ken and Frank! It's good to know that you're with me on this...

Yes, hopefully the assembled model will be better (greater) than the sum of its parts. We're moving in the right direction anyway.
More paint added, all of it using masks of some sort... shaded the ribs and painted the markings. A little more shading to be done and then I need to figure out how to proceed. I find the wing attachment really flimsy, so I wonder whether I should finish the weathering before attaching the wings or after?!

Back again... and so many great posts missed all over the forum. I'll see if I can catch up.
Occasionally I've been able to put some work into the Fokker and it is now almost done - but I need a bit of help to complete it. I was going to make a replacement propeller but in the process, or rather before I started the process, I managed to lose the plastic part and now I can't really make a replacement.
According to WNW my chosen subject should have a Garuda propeller. Part E12 in the picture below.
HELP: If anyone would be so kind as to take a couple of photos of their WNW Garuda propeller, it would be enormously appreciated! I would need one photo taken straight on and one taken from the side and I would need dimensions - total lenght and breadth (thickness from front to back).
Apart from that this is what has happened and where she is at the moment...
Eduard doesn't really include everything necessary in order to rig the aircraft. The pylon is there, but not the attachement points for the forward wires coming from the wings. I added those using Gaspatch 1/32 metal turnbuckles. Other bracing wires were also attached and Gaspatch resin 1/48 turnbuckles used.
Skipping forward in the process... no pictures taken during my gloomy weeks... she is finished bar the propeller. In the end the flimsy wing attachements became less an less flimsy as the rigging went on. The wings are now quite rigid, so I suppose the rigging actually works the way it should! Except that I don't think it can be used to warp the wings...

Hi Fredrik ,
Excellent job on your Fokker Fredrik . I really do like how the metal turning effecrt on the cowl and side panels turned out and with the super job on the rigging too boot !

Absolutely fantastic Fredrik!
Everything looks spot on :D you must be pleased with that.

Fredrik - I'm just seeing this thread now and am amazed at your work and also the philosophy shared during the construction/painting. A very good story - and you model is absolutely amazing.

Great Job! I really like the rigging and the cowling. Also the shadowing on the fuselage looks spot on in my eyes.

Since I do not build 1/32 I can't help with pictures of WNW kits, but:
Dou you own the Windsock "Fokker Eindecker Compendium 1"? On the drawings there are views of the different airscrews in 1/48, the Garuda ones are on page 7 and 48. It was enough (together with photos) to sand a wooden Garuda fro my Fokker D.V recently.

Frank

Yes, well, there are a few things that could have been better... but for the first time I have replaced some parts with not just micro tubing but soldered micro tubing, so the next model might be perfect 😉.
How the new house coming along?

Very nice work on your Fokker, Faf. The rigging looks very good.
I hope you can get the prop sorted out without much pain.
