While waiting for parts etc. for the other builds, I have broken open a new project.
IMHO the Rumpler C.IV is 'butt ugly' whereas the Rumpler floatplane 6B is a thing of beauty!
The slim short fuselage and the streamlined float design really comes together on the 6B, but thats probably just me having a soft spot for seaplanes...
As you might well know...these books is a treasure trove of information...
Well I've been at it for a while, printing the plans in 1/32 scale, making sure this would be doable.
Starting with the larger bottom wings and using the top wing as a mold I succeeded in creating the larger bottom wings of the 6B.
The top wings also had to be altered a bit to narrow the opening.
Next up were the floats, which would have to be scratched from sheet styrene...
I know it looks like a lot of work, but this is what I love most about modelling, adding components and scratched parts.
Anyways, I just needed to make one master to be able to cast resin copy's afterwards.
The last major issue of this conversion is the shortened fuselage of the 6B...
It took me some time to figure out where to cut, but in the end everything fits together perfectly!
Btw, the 6B had the Mercedes D.III engine, so the kit D.IV had to be replaced.
The 6B was a single seater fighter.
Next up will be to convert the interior to fit the exterior...
Cheers: Kent

Awesome project Kent and will be following a long on this one . Built Copper States Models kit of this type and you are right , she is a beautiful aircraft on floats !

The floats are awesome as is the rest of the conversion work! It will be a gorgeous aircraft when done!
RAGIII

This is quite a project Kent and already looking like a very rewarding one. Some real modelling already completed and looking very good so far, I'm looking forward to following your progress. Break a leg! 8) 8) 8)
Cheers,
Lance
-
Kent, your work never ceases to amaze me. I'll be following this one!
-
Thanks Terri, Rick, Lance & Bill - Appreciate the support!
Does any of you know anything about the way some of the German floats were treated/painted to make them more water resistant?
In the top photo of the two Rumpler 6B's there is a clear difference in how the floats are looking?
Kent
-
Marvellous!
:o :o
vB
-
Thank you Bob!
-
Questions on the bituminous waterproofing paint used on some of the German floats...
Was the paint pitch black or did it have a brownish tint to it?
Did it cover all of the floats, incl. the top side which would have been covered with naval hex fabric before painting?
Kent
-
From the WNW Felixstowe...
Felixstowe flying boat wings and tailplane upper surfaces usually appear very dark in photographs and have been recorded simply as ‘green’ with the bottom surfaces remaining heavily varnished Clear Doped Linen (CDL). The bottom of the hull, bow, tops of the fins, and rear hull washboards were finished with gloss black bituminous tar based paint inside and out for waterproofing, as were the fabric wrapped side struts and tailplane struts.
-
Found a photo of a german floatplane with 'black' floats...
Maybe I'm imagining things, but I think the fabric shows through the black paint on top of the floats?
-
Looks like naval hex on top of the floats and black on the sides (and probably the bottom).
Nice work, Kent. Those floats are awesome.
-
We used coal tar epoxy extensively at the Wastewater Plant to protect concrete and steel from harsh liquids. That stuff would have never allowed the loz to peek through, but this stuff is a paint, not an epoxy and from working around coal tar products, I can say that what the photo shows is likely a coat of coal tar paint slathered over the already applied loz. Just my "Number Two" cents worth from the treatment plant.
sp
-
Hi Kent , I guess the short answer is yes ,
Sp is correct on the tar/paint as waterproofing and was applied over the loz on the float tops , but is kinda of transparent ( like Tamiya Smoke ) . This was sometimes over painted with the undersurface colour ( pale blue/grey ) depending on the squadron . Not sure if this was done at the factories or something they did at the unit level for extra proofing . I'm more on the side of unit leave on where this was done . The float struts aren't coated the same as the floats , but painted ( light grey ? ) perhaps . Sorry I couldn't be of more help Kent , but I was not able to find much info about the floats .
Terri
-
Great looking float, Kent! Really love the idea of the conversion.
Gaz
-
Thanks Guy's...
A little beside the issue at hand, I stubled across this guy on Danish television making his own wooden boat and waterproofing
it with wooden tar 'cooked' from pine trees. Producing tar from wood seams to have been used here in Scandinavia since the Iron Age.
So I think a little brownish tint to the floats would be appropriate...
-
What a great project!
The floats could not be done better, looks like WNW kit parts - fantastic!
Cheers,
Frank
-
Although I disagree on the looks of the C.IV (though I like that "late" with the rounded nose more) this is some serious modelling going on!
-
Fantastic project- can’t wait to see how it progresses!
-
I have been very reluctant to spend expensive Aviattic Naval hex on the floats.
I was afraid that it wouldn't be possible to get the decals to fit down into the groves of the top of the floats.
And if I on top of that would end up darkening the floats with tamiya smoke...
So a far out idea emerged in my mind...
Would it be possible to mask the German Naval Hex pattern and paint it on the float surface.
I didn't really think it all through and in the beginning I thought I would need several masks...
It turned out to be much more simpel than that, I only needed to cut one mask to paint the pattern!
1. paint layer, a grey'ish light rosa base color.
2. paint layer, a brownish color for the dark hexagons.
3. paint layer, a blue grey color.
After a little retouching the result is quite convincing.
And the masks cut from vinyl is even reusable for another project!
Kent
-
Impressive work in making and using those masks. The Hex pattern looks Awesome!
RAGIII
-
Thanks Rick, I haven't decided if I want to do the 'blackened' floats yet, lets see when we get to it...
The converted parts for the fuselage and cockpit, incl. the Mercedes D.III engine are coming along.
Kent
-
Excellent work on the loz with the use of mask and the pit is looking very sweet . Impressive work Kent :)
Terri

Your work is always a great show and inspiration. This build is not an exception!
Especially that I have the Early Rumpler in my stash to be built, preferably into something unusual! And I also have a soft spot for hydroplanes. 😉 Needless to say, I will be watching your progress with great intetest!

Oohh, that would be nice with another Rumpler, perhaps a 6B2 with the late nose?
Kent
-
Interesting but I will rather build an early one, the late in Polish markings already sits in my cabinet.
-
Great use of masks! I've been thinking along similar lines, but this was an eye-opener. 👍
/Fredrik
-
Outstanding work on the interior bits! This is really going to be an impressive Model!
RAGIII
-
Fantastic work K!
Guy
-
Thank you Guy!
Too late I realized something was off...
I don't know how I missed it, I knew the LMG was on the opposite side of the Rumpler 6B, but I didn't put two and two together...
The fact that the engine was replaced by a Mercedes D.III would of course mean the oil tank was replaced too, to the right side!
Thats why the machine gun was on the other side! And thats why the opening in the instrument panel had to be mirrored to the left side.
Well if I had had any cockpit photo's of the 6B maybe I would have found out before and didn't have to redo the instrument panel a second time...
Well I managed to get it right, without too much trouble. Maybe some of the instrument were in another place too, but this will have to do for now.
Cheers: Kent
-
Kent,
That's a good catch. The cockpit is looking first class, as always.
Kevin
-
Good catch on the interior. Better to catch it now rather than too late.
-
You should get into the aftermarket business. As always your work is awesome!!
-
Thanks! I'm just not ready to do that yet ;)
Some progress on the fuselage parts...
Modyfied cowling parts for the LMG.
Cheers: Kent

Shaping up really nicely Kent :)
Terri

Finally some progress on the Rumpler...

Scratched enlarged rudder on the 6B.
Naval Hex applied.
Cheers: Kent
-
Your Rumpler is very impressive! It looks as though you covered the stringers prior to the Hex decals? If so what did you use? Outstanding details on all!
RAGIII
-
Awesome work Kent !
Terri
-
The stringers look real nice. It is a nice subtle detail. Great work.
-
Thanks Rick, Terri & Fvdm.
The white paint over the stringers, is white paint, I was testing the color for the transparent Hex decals. Ended up using a light blue.
It took me forever to fit the forward engine panels, there's very little to work with on the the shortened cowling.
The top wing has been assembled, ready to paint I think...
Cheers: Kent
-
Do like how the cowl turned out Kent and your top wing is most excellent so far . :)
Terri
-
The nose and cowl panels are amazing Kent! Great progress on the upper wing as well! Looks like another contest winner is on the way!
RAGIII
-
Thanks Rick!
A huge milestone of this build has been reached...
The Rumpler is up on it's floats. You never really know if the build is going to succeed before stages like this has been accomplished.
The main struts have been soldered together to add som stiffness to the structure (not my cup of tea, but it does the job)
The floats have only been dry fitted, amazingly enough, there are still some 8 struts to fit...
Cheers: Kent
-
Wow Kent, what an interesting conversion and that hex pattern turned out so fine. However, my absolute highlight so far is the leather seat! Looking forward to see more :)
Best,
Tim
-
Nice to she her on her floats :)
Terri
-
She looks with real nice with floats on. :D
-
Wow Kent, your Rumpler looks Incredible on the floats! This is a beautiful bird and Had it been issued as a WNW kit I might have been tempted to do My first floater 8)

Update on the Rumpler Seaplane build:
The floats have been 'darkened' allowing the hex pattern to be visible.
Rudder and elevators are mounted and the decals have been applied.
The wings have been masked and are ready for some 'shadowing'

Cheers: Kent

Very fine work so far kent , looking forward on seeing how the shading on the wings turn out ,
Alexis

Excellent work!
The Wings are outstanding, considered the surgery that they underwent...
I know how difficult is to obtain such a result joining different pieces
er me

A truly beautiful piece of Modeling! Looking at the fuselage, floats, and wings No one would know that this is indeed a conversion! Brilliant!
RAGIII

Lovely work, Kent.
What tape did you use on the ribs?
Cheers,

Thanks all!
I know it sounds crazy but I'm using tons of tesa precision mask tape, cutting the 0.8-0.9 mm strips myself...

Nothing crazy about that, Kent! I use the pink version of Tesa tape, the sensitive variety. Works really well and works out a lot cheaper than Tamiya tape.
Thanks for sharing.

Congratulations on a truly beautiful finish Kent, what a lovely model! Great work and superb detailing, you can be extremely proud of this one!
Cheers,

I am proud of this one Lance, it was so much more complicated than I initially thought.
So many parts that needed alteration, correction or needed to be scratched.
The converted exhaust for the Daimler Mercedes D.III Engine being the most challenging.
I know I need this to keep the motivation continuing, but when finally finished, this also makes me even more content with the result!
Regards: Kent
-
Kent,
That’s a lovely kit bash you’ve done there.
I agree, sticking floats on a variant of a fighter certainly makes a difference to the look. I much prefer an Albatross W4 to any of the other mid variant Albatross fighters.
Great job mate!
Cheers,
Hugh

What a fantastic plane this is. Really beautiful.

Top shelf work, Kent. Outstanding.

What a beautiful seaplane you have created here!
I need to go back a page to view the pictures again ... so nice ....

Kent , few issues came up for you during the build but you over came those with out any difficulty and produce one very outstanding model :)
Congrats on very beautiful build ! But I think you need to add a sopwith 1 1/2 strutter float plane ...that would be the cats meow ;)
Alexis

The floats make it a much more interesting aircraft.
This is a great conversion Kent, and beautifully detailed!
I admire the way you solved the problem with the oil tank and the LMG.
