The time has come to the post-war Ninak. My plan is to build a 30Sqn machine H3633 "30" known from the group photo with its more famous "star" and "swastika" ones. The individual markings will be sprayed using the custom made masks. I have also ordered Pheon PE spoke wheeIs, apparently both additions are on the way to me.
I have used the holidays time to clean and thematically bag all the parts. And in the recent days after coming back home I have been busy with the interior bits. They are now ready for assembly.

I always admire your models Prez because they are so clean and precise in detail. You seem to be able to get the colours just right every time. The instrument panel is super!

Very nice variations within your wood tones :) Tagging along with interest !

Clean, neat and absolutely beautiful! Your usual outstanding work, Przemo! Regards, Marc.

The woodwork and the panel look fantastic. I cannot wait to see more!

Thank you, all of you.
Saturday with Lego bricks... ooops, I meant well fitting WNW parts ;D
The interior structure assembled, the engine fits finely, too. And everything just sits perfectly inside the fuselage...

The interior looks great, Przemol. Can't wait to see how you deal with the engine.

What a stunning interior!

Beautiful cockpit work Przemol! Lovely painting and detailing!
RAGIII

This is very fine work indeed.!

Nicely done n True Prez fashion. One of my all time favorite kits. The real "Gotcha" on this are those PE pieces that stick out of the fuselage on the rudder control bar. Have a care. I like your wood tones, all in all another exceptional build.

Continuing to be your usual brilliant work!
RAGIII

Got to agree with Rick: absolutely stunning painting and finish of the interior.
Stephen.

Beautiful interiors, everything looks the real thing. Looking forward to the next steps.

Thank you, everyone.
Well, now the build goes in two parallel paths. For path one - the fuselage is closed, the seams filled with liquid CA glue, now curing before sanding and smoothing starts.
For path two - not to waste time, I have turned my attention to the Liberty engine. First of all I have realized that the war version of WNW Ninak instruction has two pages of excellent reference photos not included in the post-war version. But the most important thing is that I found the treasure here, in the Des' website - His masterful enhancement of the WNW Liberty engine. I will try to follow his steps as well as my skills allow. So I have
i) cut the gaps between cylinders,
ii) prepared small priming cups (some spare resin bits with fine 2mm rods ready to drill the holes and install the soldering wire bits as valves),
iii) drilled the holes in the top intake manifolds to for them
iv) decided not to exchange the spark plugs aware that my possible replacements would not necessarily be any enhancements
v) corrected the electric wire lead - WNW prepared the holes for 24 cables on the upper side and omitted the holes at the front for two front spark cables as well as the inlet at the rear where the cables from the magnetos enter the lead.

Double what Rick said. You must have kicked NASA out of one of their clean rooms that is so neat. Something for us all to shoot for even if most can't come near. A real inspiration.

Eye candy for sure ;)

Progress on the engine - basic bits coloured and subassembled. New bits - electric wires, hose clamps and air installation made from scratch (wires, self-adhesive foil, plastic rods...), the rest are the kit parts. One last missing bit is the fuel installation - three pipes and a filter to be scratched, too.

Is the banding on the hose pieces paint or tape? In either case it is masterfully applied. Same can of course be said about the rest of the photos.

The silver clamps are self-adhesive foil. The intake manifold cooling pipes had the imitation of rubber banding added - this from the Aizu masking tape 1mm wide painted black.
And the subsequent steps of the engine assembly and installing... In the meantime I realized that with the camshafts and magnetos installe the engine will not jump onto its bearers (after all the assembly instruction should be followed... :( ). So I had to cut off temporarily the oil pump at the bottom and two bits of rear engine cowling - they are glued back but the seams on the latter will have to be treated...
And I will have to add the manufacturer plate decals at the nose as well as some dirt in visible places.
The silvery grain in the photos is mostly due to flash photography.

Looking good, Przemol. A dark wash on the valve train will really bring out the detail!
Are you using additional reference sources other than the instructions for the engine detailing?

Thank you, everyone.

Yes, the wash is already working, the photos will come later. ;)
And no, I did not find any other reference better than what is in the WNW instructions or what Des used to detail his masterpiece.
-
Thank you for the reply. I have one of these in the stash. Nice to know the instructions have adequate reference pics.

But please note that only the war version has the instructions with the engine photos ;)
Contrary to this, the war version kit does not contain the vital PE element for the pilot rudder bar which should protrude through the slots in the fuselage sides ::)

At the moment, you can still access the instructions sheets for all WNW models, on the original website. I don't know how long that will remain, but it's a great reference site especially when making a same type model from a different manufacturer or scale.
Back to this build, it is one I am following closely as PrzemoL is a master craftsman!
-
The engine is now complete. The seams on the fuselage are still being treated and while the CA glue is setting I have turned my attention to the lovely PE set for the spoked wheels from Pheon.

Again a big "WOW"!
I always impressed by the combination of such a beautiful detailed WNW kit in the hands of a masterful modeler.

Beautiful work!
Those PE wheels look daunting, I had to do some in 1/72 some years ago and found the toughest part to get the outward "bend" just right. I suppose you could use one of the covered wheels as a jig, now that I think about it some. Nonetheless, I'm sure they'll end up looking great!

Actually I have already completed the wheels assembly. Here the PE is very carefully designed and made by Rowan from Pheon - the bend spots are suitably thinner and the all bending process goes without any fuss - I have followed the very detailed and clever instructions (1. Attach the axis hub to the flat spoke side. 2. Glue this set to the WNW tyre. 3. Attach the unbent spoke part to the hub. 4. Bend it segment after segment to touch the tyre rim. 5. Hide the minor misalignment of rim segments by the additional PE ring.) All in all a pleasure to work on.
I will take the photos after the wheels are painted.
-
very nice work here....super details I like this
-
Nice work on the wheels, Przemol.
Another question, if you would indulge me, I see you cut the engine cowling just behind the engine to get the engine into the fuse. Will the engine not fit into the fuse if the fuse halves are joined together? It looks like the instructions direct one to mount the engine in the frame before closing up the fuse?
-
Thank you for your kind comments.

The kit instruction clearly shows to put the engine on the bearers before closing the fuselage. If you try to insert it afterwards then it does not enter. It would but without the magnetos and the camshaft rods - I was dryfitting the enging without these bits and thus came to the wrong conclusion that it would be possible to install it later - which is what I prefer due to masking for airbrushing the fuselage. Unfortunately now I have two extra seams to treat and the careful masking of the engine will still be necessary ;)
-
Engine and wheels look Fantastic! Ken has a sharp eye as I didn't notice the extra seam. I guess we all make errors , although you don't very often you do Much Better at fixing yours than I do 8)

Great work on your Ninak, Przemol! I nearly got caught with the engine installation on mine. I too thought it could be installed later but fortunately tried dry-fitting it with the magnetos attached and before closing the fuselage. At least the surgery required to get your engine in wasn't too bad. Putting the engine cover in place helps with the masking too.
Cheers,
Eric

Excellent wheels. You nailed the
tire tyre color perfectly!
-
The engine and wood look fantastic Prez. I am interested in the wheels as I am using Gaspatch wheels on my project. Both look very good but I am a little puzzled by the blue colour of the tyres.
Stephen.
-
Thanks!
The photos are taken in rush with my phone, which has problems with WB. These are usual WNW grey plastic tyres painted in dark grey.
-
Whoa Przemo! Those wheels are beauties!

Excellent job on getting the wheels together . I would have made a mess out of the PE spokes .

excellent work on the wheels! I tried PE spokes a couple of times and met with disaster. You are a Master!
RAGIII

Thank you, everyone.
excellent work on the wheels! I tried PE spokes a couple of times and met with disaster. You are a Master!
RAGIII
Rick, I am sure you would do well with these, the key to the success is that axle hub which centres it all and facilitates the assembly. Great design from Rowan!
And here a few more steps
The fuselage joints are finally cured. I have also added the PE side steps. Also some fitting of the PE generator support revealed that the rear hole is mislocated - I had to fill it (the white spot).

I did not quite like the way to lead the control lines for the ailerons as designed by WNW. So I decided to remove the plastic imitation of turnbuckles and the cable from the control horns and replaced them with Gaspatch bits. Thus I will have a chance to lead the cables from the openinigs in the wings through the holes drilled in the horn tips to the eyelets in the turnbuckles.

Thank you again.
More preparations:
1) well over 120 eyelets installed and tested for pull-out
2) turnbuckles for control lines installed or prepared
3) exhaoust outlets drilled out
4) control surfaces hinged connections reinforced with wire bits
5) gun ring assembled
6) engine cowls which will be set aside the model - with removed assembly bits and thinned down

It looks like ORAMASK 810, which I also use for my cutter.
I was told to not use ORAMASK 810S, it can be applied wet, but the glue is solvent based. So it may be aggressive to our paints.
PrzemoL, nice work!
