After being working on several projects for a while now, it's finally time to post some of my progress with this one..

Swedish seaplane, Thulin Typ G - Flygbåt No 15. 'Marinens Flygväsende' 1917.
In WWI Sweden was neutral and didn't participate in the hostilities, but they needed to secure their neutrality.
One year after the outbreak of the First World War, the aviation pioneer Enoch Thulin founded a airplane factory in
Landskrona. They received an order from the Swedish navy for five seaplanes of the type Thulin G. It was the first large
order for a military aircraft designed in Sweden.
Thulin G would have German-made Benz Bz III engines. Engine deliveries were delayed due to the First World War and
therefore the aircraft could not be delivered until 1917. They were used for reconnaissance at sea and stationed at several
naval air bases along the Swedish coast: Karlskrona, Vaxholm, Landskrona, Hägernäs og Göteborg.
Enoch Thulin had placed great emphasis on aerodynamic properties when he designed the Thulin G. Nevertheless, the
aircraft had deficiencies in construction - It was difficult to maneuver on the water and had poor flight characteristics.
Of the five aircraft built, two crashed and one was destroyed in a fire. The two remaining Thulin G's were taken out of
service in 1922.
One Thulin G 'Flygbåt No 15', survives to this day at the 'Flygvapenmuseum' in Sweden.
As the Thulin G seaplane is a derivate of the German Albatros B.II Observer plane, I've been using parts from the WNW kit.
The main issue is the larger wingspan of the Thulin G, but encouraged by the success I had with converting the wings of
the Aeromarine, I want to try too accomplish this beautiful seaplane too. The Daimler-Mercedes engine is replaced by a
Benz Bz III. Most of the fuselage will be converted too.

Great start on an ambitious project. I applaud the use of a WnW kit as a basis for the model. Not many would have used one, but it looks like this one is going to very good use. Please keep us updated on this project as it will be fascinating.

Great conversion even if it is in the gigantic scale. This is an interesting project of a type which is new to me. I will be following with interest to pick up tips which you are certain to reveal to us..

A fascinating project Kent, and a very unique subject. Hacking up a Wingnuts Kit takes a bit of raw courage alright as sp has already remarked however it's looking like a real winner already. I am really going to enjoy this one!

Thank you, I find the subject very fascinating too, not at least because we Danes share the waters in between our countrys with the Swedes.

I found this wonderful photo of Flygbåt No. 15 from 1919. This time in light blue Swedish 'camouflage'?
I haven't decided which 'livery' to choose...
1) Natural wood & canvas.
2) Light blue and canvas wings.
3) Dark blue and canvas wings.
What do you guy's think?

I always had a soft spot for Natural wood so my vote is cast :)

I built an electric powered flying one in Imperial Russian Navy markings. Looked great in the air. The wing floats were held on with magnets and went tumbling undamaged when it landed in the grass. It was varnished wood and CDL, so you know what I'd like to see.

Ok, looks like I will have to practice my wood grain skills ;)
They need improvement anyways, so...

Parts for the interior
(http://www.danskemodelbyggere.dk/forum/gallery/7698-050820085029-16657913.jpeg)
The Thulin G had double controls so I will have to improvise in the cockpits.
Kent

Great project and spectacular work on it. I will be watching this with great interest.
As for the wood, it does look fine to me :)

The wood grain looks excellent to Me but it is your Model 8) You are moving along Nicely!
RAGIII

And whats wrong with the effect ? Looks pretty damn good to me Kent as well as the leather on the seats :)
Terri

Thanks, yes the interiors looks ok, but I have never done exterior wood grain finish.
I'm not sure what technique to use, oils over acrylics or decals over acrylics etc...
What do you guy's recommend for a start? Which gives the best result with the least risk? (Tutorials are welcome)
Regards: Kent
-
If you like my Rumpler, Albatros D.V or Albatros B.II (all can be found in this forum in the gallery section) then I recommend painting not decalling. I use a light beige base to be airbrushed, then brush paint the imitation of wood grain - usually with water based colours - darker than the base. Finally everything is coated with very thin layers of clear (golden yellow, orange, brown or a selected mix thereof, depending on the final hue) until the satisfactory colour is achieved.
-
The hints and Tips subforum has a wood grain tutorial by Eric Larson - the wood meister. I followed this tutorial when learning how to do wood.
-
This looks like a great subject.
-
Great work!
What about the idea to use real wood?

Well you are off to an excellent learning curve Kent . There are many - many different methods and mediums one can use . For the least hassle , decals would be the best bet . All other ways I guess will be try and error until you find a method with works best for you . I don't use oils at all so really can't give feed back on their usage . I have always done my grain effect with acrylic paints and just over the past few years I have started adding the use on pencil crayons to the mix . Take a peek of at my HB D.1 and Lloyd builds . Prze is method is a good one , start light and slowly go darker until you are happy with the results . Let the clear coating dry a bit before adding the next layer of clear and build it up in sections for different effects . Good luck Kent and I look forward on your choosen method and results :)

I just don't know what to say ....I'm walking away with my head held down in shame .
Beautiful work on the fuselage Kent , very well done on you cut lines . How do you get such nice clean cuts which are straight I might add . Something I struggle with and can make a real mess out of things .
Terri
-
Beautiful work on all of your modifications. Interiors look great, I think hand brushing will give the best flexibility in exterior woodgraining as well.

Somehow this has passed me by.... I think those new floats are top notch and the interior structure of the fuselage is also very good indeed. This is going to be another of those interesting builds of a type which is new to me.

So, finally after testing the plywood 'cladding' method I'm preparing to revive the Thulin, or at least the floats...

Some of the lessons I learned on the Albatros plywood can be put to use. I've changed the basic painting and shading of the floats.
The plywood pattern print has also been altered, lets see how it turns out this time...

To my horror I've noticed how long time it's been since I last worked on my 'precious baby'.
I have been waiting for the radiator parts from Melius Manus, which have now finally arrived!
On top of that I've misplaced/lost one of the upper wing halves. I wonder were it has gone?
So, that had to be replaced by a new castings.
Well, all of that sparked this build into a new start, and I have lately been working to adjust
some imperfections on the fuselage as well as the rudder parts, rear float and extended fuel tank...

Good to see you back on this one!

Finally the basic shape of the wings are done, pphheeww...
The wingspan of it's origin, the Albatros B.II - 12.8 m (42 ft 0 in) - 40 cm's
The Thulin G had a wingspan of 17.2 m (56 ft 5 in) - That's 53,73 cm's
It's a huge wingspan for a two seater reconnaissance aircraft!
The Albatros W.1 (closest relative) only had a wingspan of 14,4 m's.
The Thulin G's wingspan is only 4 cm's short of the AEG G.IV which had a wingspan of 18.4 m (60 ft 4 in) 57,5 cm's.
Kent
-
That's getting close to standard sailplane wingspan (15M). Must have been a floater (in more ways than one).
-
The wings look superb! They may have taken a lot of effort but it was obviously worthwhile!
RAGIII

Wow , that's quit the wing span !

Wonderful model, very happy to see this subject. The Thulin G has been lurking in back of my head for a while but the paintjob she’s currently in has put it on the waiting list. I wasn’t aware it was wooden at some point. You made the right choice in livery me thinks.

A very impressive build! It was really fun/awe inspiring to see it in the flesh the past weekend! It's difficult to understand the amount of work you've put into this conversion before one stands in front of it and read the description.
It was nice to meet you as well. I hope the trip home went well and that all models survived it.

Thank you all, really appreciate the kind words :D
"I'm sure I never will do this again" - Now haven't I heard that phrase once or twice...
The Build was complicated and involved major surgery. And in the end, not a part wasn't altered, converted or scratched.
But it was all worth it, when I finally was able to take it to the Swedish C4-Open show 2022 (4 years Covid, Surgery),
The model of the Swedish Thulin G was really appreciated by my fellow Swedish modellers.
(The model was awarded, 'Best model of a Swedish plane')
Thanks again! Kent

Marvellous model
