I usually tend to have 2 kits on the go at once so if paint is drying on one i've still got something to do, i haven't achieved much of anything recently due to being back at work but i have made a start on my Camel trench fighter from Roden.
Engine was painted with chrome silver and then a dirty wash on top which was a mix of black and burnt umber for an oily effect, the washer is 20mm diameter just for a bit of scale :D

Interior parts are all painted, there was no decal for the instruments so i added a few blobs of paint. The white ran a bit which is a shame but i don't think it's really gonna be seen once in place anyway.

Seat and fuel tank assembly, the top tank is currently just held with a small blob of blue tack as i'm not 100% on the fitting location. There's 2 lugs on the top of the lower tank but 4 holes in the base of the upper tank so it's going to sit offset in either the forward or rear position. Pics i've seen of the real thing show the tank sitting forward the same as i currently have it but i'll wait until i know for sure before gluing it. Have to say that the instructions are a bit vague at best, especially with where the interior bits actually fit so a bit of trial and error might ensue.

I didn't go too mad with the interior paint, just enough to hint at a wood effect, it's 1/72 and the cockpit hole is tiny so hardly anything will be seen once all closed up.

It took a lot of fettling to get the wings to fit anywhere near square and flush with the underside, same for the half moon infill piece at the front. I'm not fussed about the gaps in this area as there's a plate which goes over the top that the downward facing guns go through so it will all be covered. Not much i can do till some 1.5mm drills turn up so i can drill through the wing base for said guns, reckon it's best i do that before fitting the interior :D

Just a shot for scale purposes with a cocktail stick, it's a tiny little thing :D

Awesome start! The engine ,seat, and panel look great!

OMG! That is so tiny!
Excellent work so far, mate!

Will be following long on this one :)

Nice start, it is certainly tiny though!

Great start, I loved your BE2c so will follow this very keenly. I'm running out of space for 1/32 kits so might have to see if I can cope with the true scale still.

i'm mainly building in 1/72 becuase of shelf space and i want fo hone my skills before attacking a bigger more expensive model. 1/72 is great but i look at you guys building the 1/32's with envious eyes due to the extra detail available and not having to deal with too many tiny parts

You slipped this in when I was away so I have missed this until now. An interesting choice of subject - never mind the size it is the quality that counts! You have made a cracking start - I will follow further updates with interest.
Stephen.

been a while since my last update, work has got in the way and i haven't had the time or brain power that this build needs. I have however been making slow but steady progress on the camel...
It took a bit of lining up as there's no 'training wheels' but the cockpit surround and rear upper section are now on and the seams were pretty good so no need for any filler.
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50160649726_0f08c73944_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2jqwrAo)
I then applied my usual white primer followed by 2 thin coats on the front engine section mainly so i could get some paint on the arear behind where the engine sits.
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50175042118_9894e63c68_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2jrNcX5)
I could then fit the engine and cowling, i'll apply the last coat of grey once the main fuselage section has been painted as i'm expecting a bit of paint seepage due to the awkward masking required.
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50175837172_e5c9d35283_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2jrShhU)
Next step was to pre drill the rigging holes which pretty much went without any issues but didn't really get any pics of them. The first coat of my version of PC10 (referred to as WW1 green on the box) has been applied, as usual this was put on with a hairy stick and is oil paint, having read that you can get a good green from mixing yellow ochre and black that's what i tried. I think it's a nice colour and well within tolerance of being the correct shade (if there is such a thing), one more coat should see this part of the paint process done then it's on to the wood around the cockpit area

In other news i turned 24 again a couple of days ago and landed these 2 as pressies, the Gotha should keep me quiet and outta trouble for a couple of months :D

Very fine work on that tiny Camel.
Having built two of these some years ago I can only say, they are pleasure to work on, probably the best Roden's effort in their history.
-
I plan to build a 1/72 trench fighter camel too, and will be following closely your postings

Excellent progress! I like the PC10 color. I often use that mix when painting Figures in Olive Drab or doing Fokker Streaking. A touch of red takes it to the greenish brown range.Your Camel is looking great!

Making some really nice progress on this little guy :) I do hope you share the Gotha build ;)

thanks and thanks for the paint tip, any particular shade of red? I don't currently have any red in my collection but am planning on getting some so would be good to know i'm getting the right one ;)

I will...warts 'n all :D

Good to see that you are making excellent progress on the Camel build. That is turning into a very neat little gem.
I have a started Roden Gotha G V/Va in the roof - I will follow your build because it might just persuade me to see if I could finish it.
Stephen.

a small step forward for this build, the second coat is on and all seems well. I left the upper surface of the top wing, i'll put the second coat on that once the rigging is done and i plan to do the same on the lower surface of the lower wing. I'll let it dry another day then mask up to paint the cockpit surround with a wood effect.

Nice job,
Good to see another 1/72 build on here!

managed to get the wood effect done in the last couple of days, a few touch-ins needed around the green and the final coat of grey is still needed but it's starting to come together. the effect looks quite drastic in the pics but it's a lot more subtle to the naked eye

Nice work so far, I have the Bentley version to build one day. Compared to some of their older ones, it looks to be one of Rodens best 1/72 efforts. (unlike their Fokker D.VII, which takes lot of sawing and sanding...)
The Gotha is a nice one, I built one some years ago as the G.II:

The full build review is here, though I'm sure you're not really needing it, and I would do things differnt now as well!

If the decals have a flat finish, beware... the later glossy ones seem better.

thanks for the link and info Jeroen, i'll certainly have a good read through your build info

The wood panel looks terrific. Very Nicely done.RAGIII

Nothing wrong with that , looks just right for the scale . Nice job :)

I've had a few battles with this build, it turned into the little plane that didn't want to be painted. There were certain areas where the paint just wouldn't stick and the slightest touch would rub it off. It then took me a few too many attempts to get the upper wing mounted, i finally got it mounted and it's not looking too bad, it's not dead square and i'll try and tweak it once the paint on the upper wing is dry. This is where i'm currently at with this build

I missed this tread before, very nice build of your Camel, I like how you managed interiors and the PC10 painting.

This one is certainly causing you problems, but keep at it because I am sure that you can ultimately beat it into submission. You are certainly showing ot who is boss at the moment.

Nice progress on that little bird , looking really nice so far . :) 8)

Glad I’m not the only one who hd to fight the Roden Camel (though in my case I was responsible for some of the battles). I too found that the upper wing wanted to wiggle a lot: the struts are thin and a bit flexible. With such cases I find that structural bracing wires (i.e. mounted in the wings, not flexible like EZ-line) helps considerably. Stretching wires symmetrically (one left, then the corresponding on the right etc) makes it easier not to cause warping on the process.

The little Camel is looking great! Very neat and fine work.. I do like your PC 10.... Marc.

The problem i found was the fuselage to wing struts, the locating pins needed to be at an angle so they engaged with the holes, roden have them in line with the strut so they never sit in the hole properly. This means as you're trying to get them in place the slightest movement and it all moves making a positive placement extremely difficult, if i build another one i think i'd file them flat and add my own pins to aid alignemnt.
I've been plodding on with this camel build and it's now rigged which brings it a step closer to completion. I still need to rig the undercarriage section but the horizontal bar broke on me (just one more problem i've had with this model (it's still shedding paint)) The wheels and rear skid are drying so once they're ready that's pretty much it for this little PITA. Since taking these pics i've done a few touch-ups so i should have this build rapped up in the next couple of days

When I look at the pics I see a very nice plane. I understand that you had some troubles but it doesn't show. Great job.

Beautiful build and it's always nice to see 1/72nd scale projects.

Remember that this is in God's Own Scale so you are more likely to have these niggly problems. Nevertheless you are making a cracking job of it.
Stephen.

i'm declaring the Camel as finished, despite the difficulties with this build (some of which were self induced) i have enjoyed the process and working on such a small model has proved more challenging than other 1/72's i've done. I think the size is partly the reason for any mishaps and if (let's face it...when) i build another one i think i'd do a better job of it.
Thanks for following along and the support on this one, it's very much appreciated. More pics in the completed section shortly.
