Hello everybody, I built this Stahltaube as testbed for decal and adesive metal foil. It stalled for a while and I resumed within the Covid lockdown GB.
Not perfect, but I've been learning a lot (...including the need for more powerful eyeglasses ::) )
Ciao

Lovely dove!!!

Very very fine. Thanks for sharing.

Hello Giuseppe,
What a magnificent representation! If I may ask, what did you use as a final top coat? To my eye the level of sheen looks perfect.
Best,
Ed
-
It doesn't need to be perfect, Giuseppe ;)
You have made a beautiful Stahltaube and that's perfect for me.
Well done!!

superb build quality, every detail is spot on 8)

Bellissimo e magnifico, Giuseppe. If you get more powerful glasses you will only be even less satisfied!
If I had produced that model I would be in heaven.... Thta is just so good that I have no words that can fully express my admiration.
Stephen.
-
Thank you everybody, you leave me speechless.
... If I may ask, what did you use as a final top coat?...
Ed, the final coat is Tamiya clear with roughly 20% flat base (X21). Except the cowling, that's Bare Metal foil (chrome), scales made with Molotow liquid chrome pen without further finishing.

Not perfect? How about absolutely beautiful? Love the way the internal structure has been suggested. This is brilliant model making!

That is just beautiful, Giuseppe! An awesome result!
Bravo!

Richie and Gazza, thank you for visiting.

Giuseppe, that is a fantastic Taube, I like it!
And what a huge bird it is :o I think that is even in 1/48 to big for my cabinet!
Cheers,
Frank
-
Thank you Frank, very kind. In effect it surprised me while building for the size.
In 1/48 it's not much bigger then a Bristol F.2B, noticeably the wings chord is really larger but featuring about the same wing area of a biplane it fits.

Magnificent model Giuseppe, clean, beautifully detailed, perfect rigging and the metal effect on the cowling is outstanding. You have really excelled on this one!
Cheers,
Lance
-
That is awesome! I would say your test was successful.
-
That is a really lovely build, you have somehow lifted it beyond assembling a kit
Well done
I'd like to know more about the metalwork on the engine panels, if you have time to describe it

Hi Giuseppe, your model looks wonderful. The rigging and other details have been skillfully mastered, and the overall look is very impressive. Very well done!

Thank you all for visiting and the feedback.
And Richard, here is an annotated description of metal work:
Parts were primed with Tamiya matt aluminium (next time I will try with a metalizer, like Alclad to get the same shine and colour beneath and showing through incidental gaps)
Templates of the parts were made with masking tape applied and burnished with a pencil to highlight contours.
Template was applied on Bare Metal foil (I used Chrome, next time will be dull aluminium as the final look is a little too shiny) cut with care and applied then -
- Burnished as much as possible (on second thought, next time I will try to remove raised details such as fasteners and louvres, to reposition after metal foil set)
Finally, scales were drawn with a fine tip Molotow liquid chrome pen (keep picture handy for pattern reference).
No varnish has been applied to metal parts, to keep natural shininess.

I hadn't come across those pens before:

I knew the product from the forum, some fellow modellers mentioned their use, I tryed one and must say is excellent for details such as bezels, oleo rods ecc.

Car modeling guys have been using them for some time now. I find I have inconsistent results with them - sometimes it looks like perfect chrome and sometimes they have a grainy look like cheap paint.
-
Absolutely beautiful build. Something to be proud of for sure.
-
Thank you Ken and Albert.
I had no direct experience with metal foil, and your feedback is welcome.
