That's fanrasric Guy! As a former 1/700 waterliner, i am highly impressed. What detail set did you use? I woild fear adding photoetch railings. So small! Wooden deck? These could become addictive. ;D
Great job on this, as usual.
Best regards,
Bob

Thanks Bob,
Yes, it certainly is a challenging scale to work in. It’s not easy, but I’m quite enjoying pushing myself. Think I got a bit stale on aircraft, not that I’m going to stop, but enjoying the diversity.
The Flyhawk Deluxe boxing has everything you need- brass barrels and a ton of etch. Seriously good value. The deck is an addition but that’s also Flyhawk’s as well. I’ve fallen in love with wood decks.

Thanks Guy. Yes, I agree: the wood decks really make these models shine. I suspect that they're also easier than trying to paint the plastic, in the long run (I seem to remember tinlets of Humbrol Deck-Bleached Teak from my youth ;D). What do you guys use for the linoleum decks on Japanese cruisers?
Very nicely done on this. Making me want to hop back into ships for a break!
Best,
Bob

That is seriously small! Looks really good though, especially with the railings and other photetched details.

To be honest Bob, I’m not one of ‘you guys‘ yet, only made a couple of ships!

Could have fooled me Guy! Your ship models look like you're an old hand at this genre. Outstanding stuff! ;D Thanks for sharing it here.

That's astonishing Guy, just outstanding modelling. I'm also a fan of ships and want to start on a Trumpeter 1/350 HMS Dreadnought. The prospect of tackling the teeny tiny details of a 1/700 scale ship would send me racing to the Navy rum!

Thanks,
Dave, it is super tiny, but there in lies the challenge! The secret is very good magnification- I bought a really decent set of medical optivisors and its transformed my abilities!
Guy

Thanks for the tip Guy. Can you recommend a brand or type of optivisors?
Best,

I’ve had sets in past off eBay for around £10-20 but I’ve never liked them, so I asked a UK supplier for a recommendation. They said these:
https://www.theloupestore.co.uk/Surgical-Loupes/Binocular-LED-headband-magnifier.html
These aren’t cheap obviously, but I use them all the time and they’re literally essential for 1/700! I thought I’d treat myself.
But they do cater for every budget. Just what you want and prepared to pay for I guess.

About the decking? Is that precolored PE or something else?.
I ordered a 1/700 USS Arizona by Trumpeter. Where might I look for similar decking and PE details?
I have been meaning to try a ship or two, but have no knowledge of ships in general, (they float IIRC), and even less of ship modeling techniques and associated supplies and tools. Seeing your Prince of Wales has ignited a long smoldering urge to build some ships. Is there a forum of sorts on modeling ships that is newbee friendly? I have more questions about ships than most folks have patience.
TIA

Looks like we’re in the same boat then ;D I didn’t have a clue either, I asked lots on Britmodeller in the maritime section and got some useful advice and tips. The wood deck is literally wood - very thin (like paper) with a sticky backing - Artwox is a decent manufacturer, but you’ll find others. They really drag the build up a couple of notches and make painting much easier. Flyhawk I would say are the premium 1/700 source. They do their own kits and detail up sets for a lot of others. The best PE I’ve ever seen. They also do wood decks too which are even thinner than Artwox - think gold leaf!
Glue is key, I use Loctite CA and Gators thin blend and Klear depending on what it needs - trial and error here.
Lot of PE bending so a decent tool and tweezers very helpful.
Good magnification and light important.
I could go on (and on!)
Guy

Look at these 1/700 ships for inspiration - I want to get this good!

Wow, that guy has some serious time on his hands.
Thanks Guy I willl follow up on those sites. The wood deck answer made that issue much clearer. I have some tissue paper thin wood veneer in my Miekraft Caproni Ca.3 kit. I can hardly imagine something that thin yet showing the detail the deck on your PoW. Thanks

Australia Post came through and my 1:700 Hobby Boss USS Arizona kit showed up in the mail today. Took 4 or 5 weeks but it made it safely. I held off until it got here, but there are 3 Tom's Modelworks PE sets as well as at least 1 or two wooden deck AM sets. I intend to order all 4 items before seriously starting this kit. I have plenty of online researching to do about building 1:700 scale ships in the mean time. I would like to build a small collection of ships this size since there is so much history around some ships, the size is right for available display space and with available detail sets they make that step up from toylike to scale model in appearance when complete. I also like that many are available as full hull models since I am not a huge fan of waterline models outside of floating on water dioramas. While it didn't play too prominent a role in WWI, Arizona was built during the war so it's OT in my book.
Guy, I likely will pester you with questions when I finally begin building it. Thanks for providing the spark that finally got me doing something in this corner of the hobby.

Not at all SP,
Fire away! I’ll have to have a look at the Hobby Boss kits - any good on first inspection?
Agree with all you’ve said above, 1/350 is just too big to keep, let alone the 1/200 behomeths!

The Hobby Boss is from the same mold as the Trumpeter. I checked the fit of the top and bottom hull halves and I've seen both better and worse fits. There is a crack in the lower hull right at the bow about half an inch long. That had to have gotten by someone at Hobby Boss because the kit was safely in plastic bags inside a sturdy kit box and the folks who packed it to ship used a lot of packing in a strong box which arrived undamaged and looking pristine. Nothing a swipe of liquid cement from the inside won't cure.
I'm planning on doing something unprecedented for me. I intend to study up on ship building techniques for this tiny scale. Hopefully I can avoid some of the worst pitfalls. Shoot, I may even break down and read the 'structions first.

Ah that’s a shame, glad it’s fixable.
Have a look at the Flyhawk kits though, they’re light years ahead of the few others I’ve seen.
I think it takes a few kits under your belt to start to know what you’re doing. I made the mistake of building their gold edition (expensive!) SMS Lützow too early, I wish I’d practiced more first! I can feel each build getting significantly better.
Have fun though, that’s what it’s all about anyway!

Guy, these ships are intricate beautiful builds when they are completed.
All this time stuck to the ground must be making you start to walk sideways! ;D
I saw some of Dai’s work on display in a model shop in Osaka a few years ago and could not believe what I was seeing which incidentally had to take my magnifiers to see properly.
All of his ships are incredible works of nano art but the aircraft carriers just defy belief.
If you get that good you will be like Willard Wigan.
Thanks for sharing your work, the model ships look great.
I bet they don’t take up much display space either.

Hi Dave,
Yep, not much flying at the moment! Got to wait a couple of weeks to find out if I still have a job. Or if there’s a pay cut. Or something else (secondment to the RAF is being discussed). I put down SE5s on my request form, but I’d fly Camels if I have to ;D
What about you?
Yes, that’s the best thing about 1:700 - not too big! I’d have loved to have seen one in the flesh...

Superb detailing and an overall amazing build!

I have a question for you. My Arizona model has no small number of boats ranging from lifeboat size on up to motorized craft like you see ferrying officers ashore. (Really up on my naval terminology here) I'm wondering what colors should they be painted. Can you recommend a reference, book or web site. where I might find such information?
I received my three PE frets from Tom's Modelworks the other day. One for the Arizona, one of generic doors and one of generic hatches. I'm awaiting the wood decking I ordered and will be placing an order tomorrow for some 1/700 anchor chain as well as the called out colors of Vallejo Hull Red and Dark Sea Blue. There is also a book recommended by Tom's Modelworks that is available used for a reasonable price. Hopefully I am getting all the ducks in a row before I start. If you see anything I missed, Please LMK.
Thanks

Beautiful build, love it. Is that a tiny little Walrus on board?

That is an incredible build. I am envious of anyone that can get that tiny PE looking so great! Simply Gorgeous Model!
