Hello friends,
I'm currently tackling a Pup in my spare time. Spare time being @ a premium just now.
The cockpit is together, barring seat and belts and maybe...touch-ups.......NOOOOOOO!!! Leave... breathe....let go.....it will be OK, Bob.
Updates will be few and far between I'm afraid. Bare with me, we will get there together...in time ::)
Stay safe

That's a perfect cockpit to my eye Bob! Looks better than mine. :D Very well done.
Best regards,
Bob

Nothing amiss with that cockpit. Yes, that was good advice - leave it alone!

Lovely start Bob, I can't see anything that needs retouching there. It all looks beautiful to me, best just crack on I reckon. :)
-
I agree!
Crack on!!

Yay, another Pup! Looking very good so far! Isn't it a pity that one puts a lot of work into things that don't really show later?! One problem is of course to know what will show and what won't...

That's a nice start, Bob!

I have been working on the doped linen. I'm not 100% happy, but I'm as close as I'm going to get without losing the plot.

I love the doped linen effect you've achieved Bob. You must be at least 99% happy with it. I must learn from your accepting that it is as close as you will get without losing the plot, I've been losing the plot a little recently! Time to crack on then! :)

Wow fantastic Bob, I think your CDL looks super. I just finished Arthur Gould Lee’s No Parachute this past weekend, a smashing read. I will also therefore be doing ‘Chin Chow’ when the time comes. I highly recommend the read, it really puts you in the back seat, as it were....

Thank you Terri :-*
Jimbo,
Yes, I find Gould Lee's books to be up there with the finest memoirs of the Great War aerial conflict.
Reading his book, Open Cockpit, I rediscovered this small, but tricky event high up in the cloud ladened skies. His description of the 'Dark Brown Pup' has pushed me to the browner side of PC10. I can't argue with a man who was there, so brown it is!
I swung south, and luck was with me still, for there, half a mile away were three F.E.2ds. I pelted towards them, fired a red light, pointed to the Huns, the leader pilot saw, waved, and they followed me back to the cloud. But by the time we reached it the Albatroses had vanished, upon which I felt a complete fool. I drew close, gave the washout, they waved in acknowledgment, and went on with their job. I thought, How I’d hate to fight in a pusher, sitting in a sort of open bath-tub, projecting out in front of the wings, exposed to wind and weather, just like the aged Rumpeties I learned to fly on. It gave me the shivers to think of it. While all this was happening, my cloud, and by now I rather felt that it was mine, had moved a long way eastwards with the wind, and me with it. I was miles over Hunland, alone, with no ammunition, and at the dangerous height of 6,000, cold meat for the most inoffensive Hun. I flew west, slipping furtively from cloud to cloud and keeping ceaseless watch. Suddenly I noticed a machine going west 1,000 feet below me, and I dropped down cautiously after it. It was dark brown—had roundels—it was a Pup! I went closer, and there was Charles not in the least a goner. So we went home together. His gun had jammed at the critical moment, like mine, hence the spin. He was well shot about, but I was lucky, for I had only four bullet holes, all from the silver D–V. Charles didn’t know I’d taken one of his attackers off his tail, and stood me a drink when I told him.

I'm sure that once you hit it with castor oil, you'll feel much better!
-
It's coming along very nicely von B, and it's apparent that you're enjoying it a lot! What's not to like here? A Pup, a happy modeller, and a direct link to one of my favorite WW.I Aviation chroniclers, Arthur Gould Lee! His insight and keen recall of detail are quite remarkable and I often go back to both of his books. If he saw dark brown, then dark brown it is!
Cheers,
Lance
-
Hi Lance,
Yes, I am greatly enjoying the Pup. Such a beautiful wee thing.
I'm moving along nicely, which for me is amazing! I do as much as I can in my spare time, but I'm also very busy with Buckle production at the moment, which must always take center stage over modeling, and rightly so!
Well, I had better carry on...
Cheers,
Brown Pup In The Ring ;)
-
I came up with my version of PC10 for this Pup using Tamiya Nato Brown[XF68] 5 parts to 3 parts Field Grey [XF65], also from Tamiya.
I'm very happy with the tone. Post highlights will be added later.
Cheers,
Bob

Lovely color Bob! I will have to keep that mix in Mind.
RAGIII
-
That is a convincing shade of Brown. I'd have no idea how to weather it... so I'll watch and learn.
-
Nice PC10 there, Bob. Patent the formula!
-
I like that PC10 mix very much Bob. Like chocolate I just want to see more. Very much looking forward to seeing the next installment Supsonic Pup Build. :)
-
Thanks for the great comments! ;)
I used my plotter to cut rib tapes from low tack tape similar to Tamiya tape.
10% Tamiya Buff to 90% thinner. I clouded over the rib tapes and in the center sections. Removed the tape and then sprayed heavily thinned PC10 mix in wide coats. This has unified both paints into a subtle fading. The photo doesn't pick up on the slight tonal differences all that well, but needless to say I'm very happy with the look.
I'm enjoying this build!

Hi Gaz,
I won't be doing much more with the shading. Perhaps some spray work over the decals, but not much else.
I like the subtle look when weathering. ;)

Very nice tonal differences, Bob, even in the pictures.

A great approach on painting subtle color differences. i‘ll have to steal that and try it out.
Andreas
-
More useful tips to glean from this great online community. The subtle variations of tone do show on the photos. I like the results so much I will be stealing this method too.
-
Sharing is caring! Steal away!!
You can't go wrong when you overly thin the paint. It gives you total (and tonal) control.
Just make sure that when you use heavily thinned paint you drop your PSI down to around 10 or 12 psi.
Enjoy!
von B ;)
-
CDL on underside complete. PC10 overlap later down the road.
Fuselage section is PC10 on this little puppy, so that's why it's been left out.

Lovely work all around no doubt. The Pup was such an elegant plane - almost like no line was out of place. In WWII designers had a saying "if it looks good, it flies good." Sounds like the Pup for its moment. No wonder Richthoven was impressed.
Eric

I too have to admire the rib tape effect on the underside of the wings - they look very convincing.

Nice memorabilia, Bob!

Great work all around, Bob. Fine interior, lovely surface finish. Fingers crossed for your spare time to be enough for you to complete this build.

As always, thanks for the supportive comments. ;)
Prze, time has been a factor on this project, but I just take it one step at a time and just try to enjoy myself. It's working! 8)
Anyway, top coat has been applied to the puppy. Clear coated with Johnson's Klear thinned with distilled water.

Wingnut would have you paint the upper engine panel metal. This picture would suggest PC10.
PC10 it is!
The engine cowl has been painted with brushed aluminium. A clear coat of Klear mixed with a tiny amount of Clear base from Tamiya. I'm looking for a dull metal look.
Oil filters should cut down on the BLING!

Got another weeeeeeeee update for you.
I sprayed 'Chin Chow' using home made masks. The tamiya white was toned down with one drop of buff to 20 drops of white, thinned 50/50 with tamiya thinner + a couple drops of flow-aid.
The 'British Guiana No2' will come from the decal. My machine is good, but it's not that good!
Looking at the original photo of Chin Chow the number 4 next to the roundel on the fuselage sits just below the stitching. The decal was way to big. So I whipped out the digital calipers, measured and cut my own mask. Job done!
Cheers all!

The more I looked at the elevator control lines the more I knew something was off.
Wingnuts locate the exit point on frame. Original image of Pup shows between frames.
Sanded back the reinforced fabric, filled holes with super goooooo and moved exit holes to mid frame.
Ninja spray job to follow. Fingers crossed I can make this work. If not, it's cotton wool glued to tail, match, strike and launch!
Wish me luck!

You'll fix it. May be an aggravation now, but just think how annoying it would be if you hadn't caught it until you were done.
Another legacy from WnW. We get real good at fixing errors rather than trashing an expensive kit.
Looks like you are well on the way to making it all better.

Your masks look great!! Do you do them by hand or with Cricut type cutter?
-
von Perfectionist,
I would not have noticed however, as you "know it is there", I understand perfectly why you are taking a step or two backwards on the issue! It will be fine and better for your extra work and dilligence in the end result!
Lovely Pup!
Cheers,
Lance
-
I just have to say that it is a nice catch on the difference between the kit and the original! I know you will get it done to your usual High Standards. Along the same lines anyone building Nieuport kits should look at the openings for the elevator controls. They varied from one airframe to another. Just a heads up!
RAGIII
-
Your masks look great!! Do you do them by hand or with Cricut type cutter?
Hi Fred,
Yes, I use a 'KNK Maxx Air' cutter for all my masks. It's a well made piece of kit produced by an American company, so I wouldn't expect anything less.
Thanks ALL!!!

-
Excellent results on the leather padding von B! I struggle to come up with a good mix on the lighter more "Blonde" leather. What do you use?
RAGIII
Hi Rick,
The combing was built up from light to dark.
I laid down a couple of coats of 'Cold Light' as a base. I then applied a few thin watery coats of Yellow Ochre followed by even thinner coats of 'UA 764.' The high spots were then dry brushed with 'Cold Light' (the barest of dry brushing...dry dry dry!) to bring back points of light hitting the leather. Thin washes of Citadel Sepia added shine and helped bring everything together. The whole process took around 45 minutes to complete. I'm very happy with the results.
Hope this helps.
Cheers!

Damn! There is Way too much of this sort of thing lately. Sorry to hear you lost your Pup Bob! You should have saved the upper wing to mate with a Roden Triplane to create a Sopwith Mouse 8)

It is a pity to hear of your problem with Puppie, Bob. And what a shame to hear you binned it... There are many who would get the plastic you threw away and would try to repair it... Pity, pity...

I'm with you Bob!
I try and keep my cool but...sometimes you just gotta throw something! I have a stone wall in my basement that serves as a crash site. ;)

I feel your pain there Bob, been there, done that way too many times of late.
Two Wingnut kits were started then crashed and burned- Pfalz D.XII and Sopwith Camel. Both were en route to the rubbish bin when I paused and realised, at what these cost to replace, think before you bin, David.... so both are in the big filing box of eternal shame on a shelf and already crash/ repair depot dioramas are envisaged.
One day they may even return in a new guise...
cheers and keep modelling

Sorry to see this Bob, it was all looking so promising too. Over the last few years I think I've junked more kits than I've finished. Keep on keeping on though. Looking forward to seeing the tank come together.
