Hello All,
Sorry I’ve been largely absent lately, I have been following the content, but I just seem to be in non WW1 phase of building. I do go in cycles.
Randomly, I’m having a bash at ships. This is my first proper ship build and it’s a decent base kit but enhanced (reads replaces most of the kit parts!) with a Pontos Models upgrade (incredible quality).
Anyway, I had fun and thought I’d share...
All the best and hope you’re all keeping safe.
Guy
Ps if you want to get some Corvette inspiration - try reading ‘The Cruel Sea’ by Nicholas Monsarrat. Wonderful book.

THank you for sharing this with us!
God I love ships! Superb build!
-
Nice! I love them to but have been too nervous to tackle the PE: I keep being tempted by the 1/200 Mikasa..... cheers Matt
-
Thanks ;D
This shows you what you get with the set...

Yes, I’m tempted by the Mikasa too. Looks incredible with the Pontos set.

Thanks for showing this, Guy. Ship models certainly have a lot of detail.
The Pontos upgrades look very extensive.

Super ship Guy. Lots of wonderful detail there. Those corvettes and other small escorts were hell to be on in the Atlantic - and worse still in winter.
Stephen.

Very nice to see you and your model here!
What a huge amount of details, I think I would get lost in such a build .... You seem to manage that in a relative short time.
That is really a impressive range of modeling, from biplanes to ships in small scale and up to 1/24 birds, if I remember right. What about the new 1/200 Titanic? ;D
Thanks for showing!
Are you fully recovered with your sense of smell restored?
Cheers,
Frank

Ah thank you Frank, yes, fine now and I can small the glue again! I do tend to flick about, I’ve just started a 1/700 WW1 German battleship- Lützow. Seriously challenging in such a small scale. Here where I’m at:

I’ve fallen in love with wooden decks...

Thanks Ken, I’ve always like detail!

It must have been beyond awful, the book I mentioned really highlights it, although it’s a novel it’s based on real events.

Fantastic work Guy! Like others I'm a bit scared of ships and very impressed by those who actually manage to build them. Once you've used the masks I'd love to see it finished!
Cheers Fredrik

Beautifully done Guy! I can really appreciate what you've done here having built a smaller one several years ago for my Brother in Law. His dad, like mine, (both long departed), served in Corvettes in the Royal Canadian Navy in the "Big One". As you and Stephen mentioned they were a tough go, and my Father's stories of several Winter runs through the Wolf Packs were fascinating. I read "The Cruel Sea" at his insistence when I was about 12, he claimed it was a magnificent and accurate portrayal of life on board. I still recall a few "snippets'; wasn't there a character named Farraby? ........ and then the line from one of the Officers concerning yet another meal of those vile sausages, "Snorkers! Good OH!" I intend to build another some day in memory of my Father to pass on to one of my Sons who also served in the RCN decades later. Can I get that PE through Hannants?
Cheers,
Lance
-
Thanks Fredrik,
Yes, she needs the cherry on top! Will do ;D And thanks...
Lance, Yes you’re quite correct with your quotes! Ive read the book before and watched the film a few times. Well worth digging out again. It’s so well written and feels so authentic. I believe all the individual happenings in the book were factual events stitched together into the novel.
The Battle of the North Atlantic strikes a chord with me also as my Uncle - Alfred Goodwin - was on a merchantman, sunk by a U-boat, got into the life rafts only to be machine gunned and killed when the U-boat surfaced - he was 16...
He was on Severn Leigh SS - On the 23rd August 1940 when on route from Hull for St John she was torpedoed and sunk by gunfire from U-37. 33 crew lost from a total crew 42.

Spectacular Build! The added details are amazing. I Built a couple of Ship Models on the Past and really struggled with the PE rails and details! Yours is clean and beautifully done.

Thanks Rick!
Yes, it can be tricky.. although a bit easier in 1/144 scale.

That is a lot brass ! Beautiful job :)

Hi Guy,
I just came across your fantastic Corvette, it looks great.
Coincidentally I just watched The Cruel Sea starring Jack Hawkins, Denholm Elliot, Viginia McKenna just a couple of nights ago whilst stuck indoors here in Dubai.
Are you going to have a go at the larger 1/72 Corvette kit at some point?
If you want some model ship inspiration take a look for Phillip Reed model shipbuilder, there are about 8 short videos on youtube, each one showcasing a different ship built from scratch. Truly amazing stuff.
Best wishes,
Dave

That is some beautiful work! Almost tempts me to step out of my winged comfort zone and build a ship... almost ;D
Great stuff.

Your corvette is just awe inspiring and outstanding! I love Flower Class Corvettes and have tucked away in a wardrobe an original Matchbox 1/72 scale Flower Class tagged as a retirement project. One day perhaps, but your model is just a real world class showstopper right now.
Re The Cruel Sea, it's one of my favourite books and the movie is loaded on my cell phone to enjoy during a cruise.
Like others I also love ships but make very few. That said I have just bought a Trumpeter 1/350 scale HMS Dreadnought in pre-WW1 mode. Your corvette is a good motivation to begin that project.
cheers

Thanks Dave, I’m not sure I quite fancy the 1/72 one as it’s a very old moulding now, but in that scale you could really go to town on it!
I’ll check him out, always on the look out for inspiration!

Thanks Brad, your builds are always stellar so I’d love to see what you could do with a ship. Sometimes I find a change in model types is like starting a new hobby - and it renews all my old enthusiasm again. I’ll probably build one or two then go back to wings again!

Yes, I love the old dreadnoughts. I think Flyhawk do a lovely brass set for the Trumpeter HMS Dreadnought, again not cheap, but they ooze quality!
I do also think a change improves my skills as I’m forced to try new things/ methods that I wouldn’t have done before!
Guy
Ps the SMS Lützow is progressing - although it’s a whole new ball game in 1/700!

That is coming along really nicely Guy, but I am not sure what size 1/700th looks like other than really tiny.
You must be working with magnification in that small scale?

Incredible work! Simply Gorgeous!

Golly Dave yes! I can hardly see the hull of the ship without! ;D
I actually ordered a decent headband from an optical company and these have been invaluable, I just couldn’t do it without it.

Hello Guy, what a splendid build of the Flower-Class Corvette! What amazing timing too - I just last month decided to add this kit to my stash. And ordered the Pontos set (and the Pontos 1/200 Missouri upgrade set) from BNA in Australia. Took a month to get to me in the States but finally arrived! These little ships are just so neat and look the business. I, too, also just watched The Cruel Sea, what a great film. I’ll definitely seek out the book as I always enjoy the read better I think. But your build here? It’s so inspiring and I think I may bump this up to my next ship build. Thanks so much for sharing, what a lovely surprise for me.

Ah thanks Jimbo,
Yes, I’ve been a bit gripped by the sea at the moment!
Good luck with yours and hopefully you’ll post them somewhere?

A truly lovely corvette, Guy! Lots and lots of photo-etch, but it really makes a difference in these tiny scales... ATB, Marc.
