Hi all,
After many months of not really producing much, I wanted a quick and simple build to try and get back into the swing of things. So here is some work so far on the Eduard 1:48 Nieuport 17 profipack, built straight out of the box. I figured something French would be nice amongst my collection of British and German machines.
Here is the interior:

Major construction was a breeze. It didn't take much to get to here:

And here it is with some paint. I have chosen to paint the model in the markings of N2779 of Escadrille N.112, flown by Sois Lieutenant Carre, April 1917. This aircraft was forced down near Leffincourt and captured by the Germans. The markings came from the AeroMaster sheet 48-504 "Silver Hawks - Nieuport 17 Fighters 1916-1917 Pt 1".

I have been keeping track of the hours on this build (never really having kept track of such things), and so far I am up to just over 18 hours of build time so far....
Anways, all comments and criticisms welcome!
Thanks for looking,

Brilliant start, Brad! As always, your paint work is superb. These Eduard Nieuports are my "go to" kits when I need a break or just want to build something quick. They're fantastic kits, aren't they?
Cheers,
Bud

Looks great Brad, always nice to see someone building a Noop in any scale. I need to acquire one of the 1/32nd kits to add to my 1/72nd stash.

Brad, I have seen before is your model, and they are very impressed. This Nieuport no exception, too damn good!
As you toned fuselage and wings? This Smoke from Tamiya?

Looking good per usual Brad:
Good to see you back in the saddle again.

Brad,
I always enjoy your work immensely, consistently supurb. As for a "quick build" or OOB, not the BC I've admired for years!
Lovely little gem.
Cheers,
Lance :)

Brad,
Very impressive "Simple" build my old friend. As alway anything you build truly does become a work of art, even the simple ones. I'll be very much looking forward to your next Outstanding instalment.

Hi folks - sorry for the delayed response, I have been away from home with work all week. MANY thanks for the kind words! So far this kit has been a dream to build - I now also have their Nieuport 11 as the 17 has been a relaxing build so far.... but I am about to mount the top wing so that will be the real test! A dry fit though doesn't seem to reveal too many problems in this area.
This is the first time I have tried a silver dope paint scheme (which was basically Model Master aluminium with some white mixed in), so the shading and oil wash is important to give some variation and depth to the scheme. Though it's difficult to tell, I did paint the forward fuselage a slightly different shade from the rest of the fabric surfaces, but it gets lost a little with the weathering :-[ The overspray is a thinned black / brown mix, roughly equivalent to Tamiya "smoke". I am a big fan of using this mix for post-shading, but it is VERY easy to overdo, as I did on this one in a few spots! Luckily for me I am going for a weathered look! ;D
Hopefully the top wing will go on this weekend, and I might get a start on the rigging...
Thanks again!

Cant wait to see it Brad

So I managed to spend a couple of hours today mounting the top wing and having my first crack at rigging with fishing line, using the turnbuckle & brass sleeve approach that many of you fantastic modellers around here use. For many years I have subscribed to the elastic rigging theory, but this never looked 100% to me, isn't particularly structural, and over time can degrade. So here is my first attempt at this more complex method:
I have to say that this took me twice as long as it would normally take me to do - in fact, probably more. It is quite tricky (or was for me) to keep the threads super tight, especially if I couldn't pull the excess line back along parallel to the rigging line itself, as it would throw the angle of the brass sleeve off so that when I cut the excess the line slackened a little. So it definitely is not perfect, but I certainly learned a thing or two about this method, and I think that with some practice it will look pretty darned good. But this model really is a bit of a test bed for this so I am not too fussed at this point :)
Cheers,

Hi Brad! I must say that I just don't know how some of you guys here are able to obtain real 1:1 aircraft to masquerade as models! ;) Seriously, the Nieuport looks gritty good real (I just made that term up, inspired by your fantastic work; it's a very good thing!). Awesome job and finish! Well done. Oh, and the rigging looks fine to me. :D
I will be thrilled if my Academy 1/32 Nieuport turns out half as good-looking as your beautiful bird. :) Great job, as always. Thanks for sharing this with us.
Regards,
Bob

The rigging looks fantastic, Brad. One of the benefits of monofiliment is that it can be tightened with heat, just like stretched sprue, so if any lines go slack on you, you can draw them tight with just a bit of heat.
Can't wait to see her done. Before the weekend's out, I'd reckon.
Cheers,
Bud

Looks great. I'm a long way from having your ability.
-
Not bad, you might make a half decent modeller some day.....ah yeah well...your first crack at a new method is light years ahead of anything I can do. Very impressive, as are all your builds.

No ended kit's pics?
it's a shame, the model seems very very nice!

Simple (you say)... but beautiful.
May I ask you which paint you use for the aluminium effect ?
