Title: WNW Rumpler C.IV Early
Post by: Phillip1 on November 20, 2012, 01:02:36 PM
Fellow Modelers,
I stated in another thread I am an experienced plastic model builder, but this my first attempt at building a WWI airplane kit.  The subject is the Rumpler C.IV Early, and my build will be pretty much box stock.  The Wingnut Wings kit (in the box) is beautiful, and probably one of the best model airplanes I have ever seen.  Although not a beginner kit, it is certainly designed, engineered and manufactured to be as simple as possible.  I know there are many very talented and knowledgeable WWI airplane model builders who post on this site, so hopefully the omissions and mistakes you see on my build can be taken with a grain of salt.  Below are photos of what I have done so far.  I hope you enjoy them.

1st Image: Here is the box top (with outstanding art work).

2nd and 3rd Image: Several of the small fuselage parts are shown painted and decaled.

4th and 5th Image: The basic fuselage is shown.  I did not to use the “faux wood method” when painting the cockpit floor.  I understood the steps to doing it but did not think I would be happy with the finish, so I painted it Model Master Wood and accented it with pastel dust and drybrushing.

6th Image: The instrument panel is shown ready to added to the cockpit.

7th and 8th Image: More progress on the cockpit.

9th Image: The cockpit photo-etched parts are shown after they have been “shaped” but before painting.

10th Image: The photo-etch seatbelts are shown in place along with one half of the outside framing.

11th and 12th Images: Two views of the completed cockpit, lacking only some small diameter thread added to represent the control cables.

13th Image: The cockpit is shown inside the fuselage.  The instructions called for the engine to be built and glued in place before the installation into the fuselage but I opted not to do this.

14th Image: Close up view of the cockpit showing a control cable.

15th Image: All of the engine parts were painted Model Master Aluminum, Testors Flat Black and Model Master Brass.

16th and 17th Image: The basic engine parts are shown.  To make the aluminum parts look worn and realistic I applied dark gray pastel dust, then Winsor & Newton’s Raw Umber oil paint.  The black parts were drybrushed with Model Master Light Ghost Gray.

18th to 23rd Image: Photos of the finished engine assembly.

24th and 25th Image: The engine, oil tank and generator are shown after being glued into place.

26th Image: The assembled IMG 08 Spandau is shown.  The parts were painted Flat Black, and then pencil lead powder was brushed on to give it a gun metal look.  Finally, it was drybrushed with Light Ghost Gray.

27th and 28th Image: I had a good bit of trouble getting the machine gun glued in place, which made me almost regret installing the engine when I did.  But I was eventually successful and happy with the way it looks.

29th and 30th Image: Photos of the basic fuselage ready to be masked off and painted.

Wow!  Great start Phillip.  Your use of pastels and dry brushing really gives the engine and interior a great "used" look.  I'm anxious to see more.  ;)  Well done.

Bob

You've got a beautiful painting technique, Philip. When you talk about using pastel dust, are you applying that as a wash? I'd like to hear how you achieve such great results. The dry brushing is very effective, too. I'm looking forward to following this build.

Welcome to the forum,

Lindsay

Beautiful work Philip.

I built this kit a while back now, it's a pleasure to build, one of WNW's finest offerings. I'm sure you're enjoying the experience as I did.

Thanks for sharing your build with us Philip, it looks great (especially your radio).
I have one of these in my stash, waiting in a priority queue.
Which markings option have you decided on?

Philip,
A very impressive start into WWI modelling; crisp, clean, and wonderful use of shading and pastels. I am really impressed with the results you've achieved with the PE Seatbelts, I struggle with them and am planning the HGW fabric ones for my present project.
Looking forward to your updates; this is very pretty to watch!

Fellow Modelers,

Thank you very much for the overwhelming welcome and support.  The compliments really do mean alot.  Listed below are answers to some questions that were asked:
LindsayT-I do not use any "wash" when I weather.  On the Rumpler engine, I took a flat, soft sable brush and loaded it with dark gray pastel dust then brushed it over the entire aluminum engine block.  I cleaned the brush and went over the entire part again, but used a little more pressure to burnish in some of the dust.  About 75% of the pastel dust will fall away.  What is left helps accent the corners and recesses.  Next, Winsor & Newton oil paint was dabbed on all of the small raised details with a very small pointed brush-with no real precision.  It should be noted that a heavy coat of Testors Metalizer Sealer was applied to the aluminum finish to protect the fraglie paint before any weathering was done.  Finally, damp Q-tips were used to swipe away most of the oil paint.  The Q-tips allowed great control in spreading/smearing the oil paint to look like thins stains.  It is very effective over any metal finsh and easy to do.
Most of the drybrushing I do uses the same soft sable brush and Model Master Light Ghost Gray paint.  I think the only two "rules" I have with drybrushing are 1) remove about 98% of the paint from the brush before you start and 2) always be aware of the shape of the surface being painted (i.e. ease up on sharp corners and raised points, and add more force on flat surfaces that have minimal detail.

Kornbeef-You should post photos of your Rumpler if you have not already, as I would like to see them.

Jamo-My markings will be of of Alexander Decker's plane with two tone greens and white swans on the fuselage.  I love that scheme!

Icarroll-I feel your pain on the photo-etched seats.  This is the first time I have ever used them and they were a challenge.  The paint does not adhere well to the brass and wants to chip off.  I had to apply touch up paint after the belts were glued in place.  My standard practice is to use photo-etched buckles and masking tape straps.

I am ready to begin painting the exterior and hope to make the next post in a couple of weeks.

Thanks

Hello Philip,

very nice start and work in colors, drybrush etc. But with the better quality you could imitate wood. I think you pulled it off perfectly. Otherwise it is not a mistake, a beautiful building.

Fellow Modelers,
Work has moved to painting the exterior.  I have not gotten as far as I wanted, but decided to go ahead and post what I have done.

1st Image: This is from the kit instruction book and shows the scheme and markings of the plane I am building.

2nd Image: Most of the underside light blue parts are shown after painting.  To create this color I mixed ten (10) parts Testors White to one (1) part Model Master Intermediate Blue.

3rd Image: This image shows the fuselage and lower wings after the light green has been applied.  In researching German light and dark green colors I found a lot of inconsistencies and variations.  Even Wingnut Wing’s instructions state that specific German WW1 aircraft exterior colors are a hotly debated topic, so I guess there is some “give and take” here.  For the light green I used Model Master RAF Interior Green.  For the dark green I used Model Master Field Green.  I do not know how accurate they are, but I am happy with them.

4th Image: The demarcation line between the two greens is very loose with no specific pattern.  To achieve this effect I first cut the masking tape shapes based on the instruction’s profile drawings.  Next, I made sure the edges of the tape stayed at least 1/8” off of the model so a very loose, blurred line could be produced.  Some modelers who are very skilled with their airbrush can do this by hand, but I have to use masking tape.  This image shows the masking tape in place and the dark green paint ready to be added.

5th Image: The lower left wing is shown after the dark green paint is applied.

6th Image: The demarcation line between the lower and upper fuselage colors is very sharp.  The only challenge was the tight curve at the nose.  This image shows this area after the masking tape was removed.

7th Image: The fuselage belly is shown after weathering has been added with medium gray pastel dust.

8th to 10th Image: Views of the fuselage are shown after being weathered with pastel dust and dry-brushing.  These photos also show how effective the raised masking tape method can be in helping to produce a loose demarcation line between colors.

11th Image: Pastel dust weathering is being added to the bottom side of the upper wing to highlight the location of the internal ribs.  I find the hardest part about doing this kind detailing is knowing when enough is enough.

12th Image: Pastel dust is now added to the top side of the upper wing.  The left side has been done, and the right side is still “clean”.

13th and 14th Image: Two views of the top side of the finished upper wing.  It is now ready to be coated with Future polish and then decaled.

Phillip, your color demarcations on the wings and fuselage look great, very much to scale.  It looks from the one photo that you used a paper mask raised slightly from the surface by rolled "worms" of sticky-tack or something simlar.  How did you do it?  You got the desired effect spot on!  Thanks.

Great paint scheme choice, BTW!  :D

Fellow Modelers,
Thanks for the continued compliments.  They are greatly appreciated.

rhallinger-Your description is exactly correct.  To get the loose demarcation I used a paper mask raised slightly from the surface by rolled "worms" of sticky-tack.  I use this trick often when airbrushing.

Listed below are photos photo of the latest progress.

1st Image: Work moves to adding the decals.  One of the upper wing crosses has been applied, and the aileron is temporarily put in place so the lower piece can be properly located.  The decals are excellent and I was able to get them to completely conform using only Micro-Sol and Micro-Set setting solution.

2nd and 3rd Image: The fuselage decals are shown.  The decals dried with a high gloss on them.  To get a finish that matched the paint job, I alternated between airbrushing thin coats of Future and Dullcote (mixed with 50% thinner) and buffing with a very soft cloth between coats.  The final finish is flat with a slight sheen to it, if that makes sense.

4th Image: The coaming around the cockpit is masked and painted Model Master Leather.

5th through 10th Image: The cockpit and engine protective masking tape has been removed and the lower wings have been glued in to place.

She's beautiful Phillp! ;D  The paint really looks great!  That's a very sharp scheme.

You mentioned problems with wing alignment.  Can you describe those and how you overcame them?  I have this kit in the stash and I'd like to have the benefit of your experience.  I've built two of the smaller WNW fighters and had no problems with the wings, but I've never tackled anything as large as the Rumpler.  Thanks!

Good luck with the rest of the build.  She'll look fabulous when done!

Fellow Modelers-Thanks for the continued compliments.

rhallinger/Chris Johnson-Concerning adding the upper wing, I apologize if I gave the impression there was a kit “problem” with how this assembly goes into place.  Any shortcomings are on me (due to my lack of experience in building biplanes) and not Wingnut Wings.  Since it has been asked, I will explain how I went about attaching the upper wing.  First, I glued all of the struts to the lower wings (per the instructions).  I aligned them as close as possible, but knew there would be some bending required when the upper wing was attached.  Next, the upper wing was glued to the fuselage center struts.  Since this connection needed to be strong, I used a generous amount of 5-minute epoxy and let it set up overnight.  Minor touch up paint was applied to this area later with my airbrush.  I found gluing the center struts first was the best way to make sure alignment stayed true.  Lastly (working with one side at a time), the struts were bent to line up with the upper wing locating holes and glued in place.  Doing this insured there was no “twist” misalignment between the upper and lower wing.  I will not know if the lower wings stayed even until I add the landing gear and can measure the wings tips from the ground, but I did the best I know how.

Fellow Modelers,
Here are photos of the work I was able to get done this past weekend.  Most of the time was spent adding the rigging to the wings and landing gear.

1st Image: I used .005” diameter fishing line for the wing rigging.  From what I have read on this website, this may be a little small, but it was all I had and I thought it looked okay.  The first thing I did was to color the line with a black marker to make it stand out more.

2nd and 3rd Image: Each line was super glued into the holes in the upper wing. CA accelerator was used to lock the lines in place and speed up the glue drying process.  At first I tried gluing the bottom end of the lines to the lower wings per Wingnut Wings’ website recommendation (i.e. cutting the length a little short and holding the line in place with tweezers while the superglue set up).  After making a mess with two failed attempts, I decided this method was NOT going to work for me.  I decided to drill holes through the lower wings and bring the lines through them.  Drilling the holes was awkward since having the top wing in place required drilling some of the holes at a sharp angle.  This method also required extra cleanup on the lower wings where the glue attachments were made.  I don’t want to come across like a cry-baby, but this part of the project was frustrating and no fun at all.

4th through 7th Image: These photos show the completed wing rigging.  I will say that although it was difficult, I am happy with the way it turned out and the rigging really adds a delicate touch to the model’s appearance.

8th Image: This photo shows a topside overview featuring the Windhoff radiator, which is a large part of the aircraft’s distinctive look.

9th Image: The landing gear rigging is shown after installation.  For these lines I was able to use the “stretch and hold until dry” method described above.  My wife applied the CA accelerator while I did my best to hold the proper tension on the lines.

10th and 11th Image: Two views with the wheels and tail skid attached.

Phillip, that's one sweet looking bird! ;D  Fantastic job!  The rigging really does bring her to life, and the overall impression is simply excellent.  Very well done. :D  Nice that you could get your wife involved too! ;)

Bob

You've done a very nice job with the rigging. It looks nice and taut, and super clean too. Well done indeed! After all those trials long the way, if you're anything like me, I'll bet you felt a great deal of satisfaction when it was done.

Cheers,

Chris

Hi Pillip, hi all,
I only found that thread today and am VERY fond of what you've made out of WNW's Rumpler C.IV early bird, Phillip!
I have never built a big WWI bird (exept Revell's Fokker Dr.I in 1:28th scale some 35 years ago...), but couldn't resist to buy WNW's Hannover Cl. II as she came across my pre-christmas-mood all of a sudden... Will I ever build her? At least it is clear that the next bird I want to HAVE and will BUY is the Rumpler C.IV! And your build-log will hopefully give me the courage, I need, to actually BUILD these beauties one glory day...
So that's the story. Thank you for listening!
Richard

Fellow Modelers,
I finished my Rumpler today!  Below are the last “in progress” photos and some photos of the completed model.  I am really happy with the model, and it turned out even better than I hoped.  Wingnut Wings has made a really great product and I am proud to add it to my collection.  Thanks for the support during the build.  I will post additional completed photos when the weather permits me to take them outside.

Hello Phillip:

Very Nicely done.  This aircraft doesn't seem to be real popular and it is nice to see one finished and you did an outstanding job.  I like how  you applied the lamination in the prop.

Best

Greetings Fellow Modelers,

I wanted to share my good fortune with you.  My article about building this model is in the current issue of Fine Scale Modeler (April 2016).  Thanks again for the support I got from everyone at this site.  There is so much talent posted here I would encourage many of you to send an article to FSM, as they are open to new submissions and are a quality organization to work with.
