Title: How to scratch build struts

I recently broke the struts on my Roden 1/32 SPAD VII.  I need suggestions on how to build new ones that are sturdier.  Thanks in advance.

I use squashed brass tube, Albion Alloys make special tools to do the job (that I don't own):

I usually improvise with a steel rule and a small metalworking vice

If you can solder as well, this opens up a lot of possibilities:
